Gal going back to school

The Medicine Hat News has confirmed the rumors that Taylor Gal is leaving to go to school electing to attend the University of Lethbridge and play for the Pronghorns.

- I thought Gal made big strides last season he played extremely well last season but got into a bit of a funk during the late stages. IMO he was good enough to have played in the league as a 20 year old, he could have probably put up some pretty good numbers.

But being in a predicament such as this(overage situation) where his immediate future is unknown I definitely respect his decision to go to university.

Rookie Camp
The Tigers took 23 players from their rookie camp into main camp. That number included all the players from the club’s past two bantam drafts and four free agent rookies.

Late Friday

The Medicine Hat News had an article on Hunter Shinkaruk. Brad McEwen pretty much said that he expects Shinkaruk will earn a roster spot, but might take a bit of time to reach a comfort level in the WHL as he missed most of last season with a broken leg.

-----
The Tigers also signed first rounder 14th overall Spenser Jensen.

----
I might head over to the arena to watch the Top 40 game on Sunday to see what kind of talent the new guys posses. If I do I'll try to post some thoughts on the new guys if there are lineup sheets available. edit: Couldn't make the game had some things come up last minute.

Some WHL News

Some news out of Swift Current. Jon Keen the Broncos play by play broadcaster will be moving to Kamloops to cover the Blazers as reported by Gregg Drinnan from his Blog Taking Note

I found an article on Former Tiger Jarret Lukin and how he dealt with a rough situation getting caught experimenting with a drug during his college years.http://www.kamloopsnews.ca/article/20100820/KAMLOOPS0201/308209981/-1/KAMLOOPS02/positive-test-got-lukin-back-on-track

Also I was away for the better part of this last weekend but If you have visited the Tigers Website you already know that Former Tiger Goaltender Ryan Holfeld will be joining the Saskatchewan Huskies. He will be joining a very memorable Medicine Hat Tiger Brennan Bosch. ( aka the guy who scored the double overtime game winner in 7 games against the Vancouver Giants, that won them the whl championship).

Rookie Camp Dates Set

Courtesy of DARREN STEINKE of the Medicine Hat News

The Tigers officially begin camp on Tuesday, when members of the team’s 50-man protected list head to Cypress Hills for team building activities.

Rookie camp will start on Thursday with player registration at the Esplanade and conclude on Aug. 29 with a top 40 game set for 10 a.m. at The Arena. The top 40 game was something new that was added to rookie camp this season.

Main camp will start after the top 40 game concludes with fitness testing for the veterans. It will wrap up on Sept. 1 with a Black and White intrasquad game at 7 p.m. at The Arena.

Coyle preparing for shot at pros

Found a good article on Jace Coyle from the Cranbrook Daily Townsmen.

The article talks about how Coyle changed his mind from playing junior B hockey and going for a scholarship, to getting listed by the Spokane Chiefs and eventually a contract with the Dallas Stars. The article also mentions that Willie Desjardins tried to get the Stars to draft Jace Coyle however they only had 5 picks so they signed him as a free agent instead.

The stars weren't the only team interested, the Islanders tried to get him to play for their echl club after the Tigers were knocked out of the playoffs by Calgary Hitmen in round 2.

Junior Evaluation Camps

Team U.S.A. team Sweden, and Team Finland are having a tournament style Evaluation camp in Lake Placid, N.Y this week

The U.S.A brought in a bunch of players and cut 14 players before the tournament games began. Tyler Pitlick was one of the cuts as he was injured during the camp. Reports say he suffered some sort of minor shoulder injury. Emerson Etem made the cut and will be playing in the games.

Recent Tiger CHL Import Pick Sebastian-Lance Owuya has been flown in from Minnesota to replace an injured swede defenceman for the tournament.
