Tigers Deal for Heavyweight Forward

Medicine Hat, AB - Medicine Hat Tigers General Manager Brad McEwen announced this afternoon the Tigers have traded 17-year-old forward Riley Sheen to the Seattle Thunderbirds in exchange for soon to be 19-year-old forward Jacob Doty.

Doty, who calls Billings, MT home, has spent the past two seasons on a full time basis with the T-Birds. The 6’ 3”, 223 lbs right-winger played five games for Seattle in the 2009-10 season as a 16-year-old. In fifty-five games last season, Jake scored two goals and added five assists for seven points while picking up 107 penalty minutes.

“We acquired a 19-year-old forward in Jake who will give us a bigger forward up front,” said Tigers’ general manager Brad McEwen.  “Jake will give us some good fore checking presence and will compete hard on the puck. We are looking forward to Jake joining our team.”

“We thank Riley and his family for his time and effort while with the Tigers and wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” stated McEwen.

Last season Doty was involved in 15 fights, and 24 the year before. He is a fan favorite in Seattle.

A move to add toughness. I thought Sheen was playing well at the end of the season but was a victim to the depth charts....He will have a big opportunity to earn some prime time minutes in Seattle.

The Tigers forward group is already pretty packed, even moreso if Kessy does indeed return....A couple new prospects will likely force their way into the roster, and you gotta think room will need to eventually be made.

Updated Depth Charts (just a quick setup)

Leier(19) Valk(19) Koules(18)

I wanted this kid at the deadline he is a monster, mark my words he is a difference maker and for Riley it is a steal

Why ??? Behind Theriau's name ?

Theriau being a 20 yr old overager has a shot at playing pro so he may or may not come back

What's the word on him from your perspective ?

Love the trade, did not think Riley had the same effort and commitment as some of the other young guys, hope the fresh start is good for him! Size is what we needed, will be happy to see Doty in a Tiger jersey opening day!!! Early trade, surprising, they must have really wanted him!!!

Texas Stars depth was a little bare last season, but they could potentially have an overabundance of defenceman on their AHL team largely depending on their ufa signings.

Their AHL coaches also just got canned.Talent wise he could probably be a consistent 3rd pairing guy

Theriau also has off-season surgery to recover from (anyone hear if he has had it yet?) if it takes him a month or two into the season I think they send him back.

My Early opinion I think its 50-50. See who the stars sign/re-sign over the summer, and see what Theriau's recovery time looks like.

Its still possible that the stars don't sign him, and he goes back into the draft, and things change again. I think June 1st is the deadline

For the Tigers to keep getting better Boston and Dieno need to go, these guys are the most productive on the team and aren't good enough to be taking up spots that could be used to develop rookies in the future

I would take Boston over Bredo, better "production"

Again anyone who doesn't think Bredo is good needs to stop watching hockey, he is our only good defensive forward and our top penalty killer plus he stands up for players when need be. Its like when the Red Wings won the cup you wouldn't trade away Maltby or Draper they were shut down forwards that made a huge difference and some Tigers fans are so ignorant outside the free wheeling style to hockey to realize you need your grinders, you need you defensive forwards, and you need you Dorsetts/Tuckers/Torres type of players. Its how a TEAM works and i don't consider Boston one of those players because of his production last season he would maybe throw 2 hits a game and not really do anything else, in his rookie year he had massive potential to be another Dorsett but just never worked for it and as a 19 year old that doesn't penalty kill or have time on the power play (same with Dieno) he is an expense in future development for younger players

Wow!

Intense much? Lol. Have to admit, you used the word "productive" when generally means points, and Boston has more. I think Bredo is an amazing defensive forward but could not put the puck in the net if it were 10 ft wide. We need him to produce above what he is, he should not have less points then the rookies when he has 10 times the ice time!! You have no concerns of this??

Productive is used in words as helping the team not in points, i could care less if he had 3 points all season he is to good at face-offs, to good in his own zone and to good on penalty kills to be traded and the team knows that. With Boston he has to realize he is a grind and agitator and get under peoples skin, i hope he has a reverse Cole and does well but if not their are tons of rookie who can do what he does

Did you watch the playoffs? Bredo was invisible and scared to go in the corners. His line mates between them scored 110 ish goals. He got 5. !!! What is that?
Every team in the playoffs begs for players like Leier !! Wake up bud.
Bredo is a good kid, but plus 15 isn't exactly showing a strong defensive game for having two line mates like Etem and Shinkaruk.

I agree. I just do not know how you can justify his amount of ice time and lack of any sort of points. I think a good player has balance between defensive responsibility and scoring, you can't have one end lacking greatly below the other. Bredo does have excellent defensive skills however, he is not a defenceman. And point taken from above, to be between the two guys he was all season and have so few points, there has to be some concern there. You can't have a guy getting that much ice time and have such low numbers. As much as we need to keep the puck out of the net, we also need to get them in. Also, we have defence to play defence, we need Bredo to step it up and play some forward, not just a mid ice rover who is scared to touch the puck and does not know what to do with it when it does come to him. At his age his numbers are terribly low, you have to at least acknowledge that! And agreed, his plus minus does not scream brilliance, especially when he had 2 of the top scorers in the league on either side of him!!!!

Well if you could read a paper you would see Emerson and Hunter both credit Bredo for being so defensive and covering them so they can play their style of game and not be worried about odd man rushes, but again I'm not going to argue with idiots who have never played a game and can't realize there is more to hockey than a scorer a goalie and a tough guy

Ummm, have played, lots, more then you I am sure. Not sure why you are so blind. It is always sad when people can not see the good with the bad. You are black and white. With all players there are good and bad points. You have failed to acknowledge this the whole time which tells me you know little about the game or are blind to the fact that all player have short comings. To not admit that Bredo, who has enormous minutes and 5 goals, that is a short coming. His plus minus does not make up for this either. As I have stated previously, yes, he is an excellent defensive player, but he plays forward, not defence. The area of his game that needs work is offensive. Much like Hunter, who is amazing offensivly, needs to work on his defensive play. You clearly have not played much, but with all players there are the good and bad. Bredo, at his age and ice time, needs to show improvement around the net, this should be higher then it is, end of story.

Good luck to Scoots Scott McKay, as he embarks on his decision to go to school today. Great watching you play in a Tigers jersey.

With Scott McKay off to Mount Royal, and Paarkkonen recently having signed with a team in the Swedish Elite league. Things are starting to look pretty skinny for vets coming back.

Wow, the back end is really thin. Wonder if we will see a trade of a forward or two as we seem to have a few too many and not many spots for guys like Penner or Butcher who will probably challenge for a roster spot. On the trade block - Hurley? Dieno? For d-men? Also possible that we have an open 20 year old spot, could pick up a dman there.
