Vet Notes
Everytime Curtis Valk or Dylan Bredo was on the ice they controlled the play.
Miles Koules scored a goal and was involved in a couple others. He looks like he has a great deal of skill offensively, picked off a couple cross ice passes.

Chad Labelle crushed Jayden Hart with a solid open ice hit, but Labelle was the one who went down.

Jayden Hart got into a fight with Ty Stanton they were tucked in a corner but it looked like both guys connected with a few shots. No clear winner.

I liked the play of Rhyse Dieno, I also thought Kyle Becker and Tyler Lewington looked like rocks defensively.

Rookies
Ty Stanton - Hit everything and anything, managed to crush Curtis Valk in the corner. Your gonna like this guy. Got into a fight with Jayden Hart. Looks tall on the Ice. Very solid taking the body. He was the most impressive prospect on the ice for me. Reminds me of Colton Tuebert (former regina pat) at this point. Has a mean streak in him running over everyone in a clean and legal way.

Nathyn Mortlock - Incredible offensive vision and puck handling, but got burned a couple times defensively. Looks pretty small on the ice.

Daniel Hansen - Euro Looked nervous.

Brennan Hunker - Superb passing skills. Threaded a couple beauties through feets and sticks.

Gavin Broadhead - He can absolutely fly. IF his hands catch up to his skating he could become dangerous.

Blake Penner - Scored a goal. Was penalized for a very late hit on Nathyn Mortlock. I remember him looking poised with the puck in tight against the blueline when he was on the powerplay.

(Sean Aschim) a journeyman whler was on the Ice who I didn't realize was a 20 year old until the third period was almost over. He will be in tough for a spot.

Other Notes
Its impossible to get a decent viewing on all players from both teams on just 60 minutes of icetime but Rookies Josh McCulloch(16), Matt Staples(17), Steven Owre(16), James Wade(17), and Devon McAndrews(17) all caught my eye with their play.

Cole Sanford was not on either list. Someone told me that he was out of training camp with the flu? Edit His twitter feed mentions Mono on August 15th so he may be out for a while.

Who did you like?

Edit: Prospect Signings
Jake Fletcher August 26th
Zac Robidoux August 27th

Unable to make the game but how did our goaltending look?

Anonymous said...

Dawson looks way way way better than Kenny

Anonymous said...

Where was Jo Tambasco, listed player? Thought he looked strong at main camp. Super skilled Defenseman.

TigerTurf said...

Hmm I had a part about goalies but it disappeared....Ill edit it back in shortly

Jo Tombasco - On his twitter feed he says he is going back to Midget AAA

TigerTurf said...

Short Memory...I remember why I deleted the goalies, cause I didn't really watch them to closely

No one in particular stood out. Cameron had a couple good moments but I wasn't impressed by him. .......although Bunz had a poor intrasquad game last year.

Kenny did look like he put on a few pounds.

MaCauley looked good in his time out thier.

Starting to wonder when the Czech goalie is going to make it over here.

longtimefan said...

Thought Steven Owre was the best of the young guys, he has terrific speed. Koules is going to be a good pick up as well. Still think goaltending and our defence could be weak spots starting the season.

Anonymous said...

Two best forwards on the ice were Koules for the White team and little 15 year old Fletcher for the Black team. None of the goalies were tested that much as far as quality chances were concerned. Scott Allan on defense looked very tall and thin and showed good potential. Bredo, Valk, and Broadhead showed flashes but were also weak on finishing plays.

Anonymous said...

The tigers are looking like a goon squad this year with guys like Kessy, Doty, Stanton, Becker, Boston and even Hart which is good
Means teams will really reconsider taking shots at Hunter much like Red Deer did with Hopkins

Anonymous said...

Becker is not aggressive at all?? Not sure what kind of glasses your wearing? Good to see him score last night.

Anonymous said...

Can you say Penalty Kill.

Anonymous said...

Nice looking group, young but I think they will be able to fill the roles with time. Can you imagine what we will look like in the next 3 years - mem cup run?

Anonymous said...

With such young guys that are so good you wonder if there will be a trade, but saying that, our vets look so good, it is a tough thing to pick a guy to trade. I kinda do not think we will see any trades.

Anonymous said...

Alot of these young guys look great in these scrimmages.let's not put the cart ahead of the horse here. Time and space will be taken away from these kids in a hurry. If we go with too young a group, their confidence will be shattered.
You have to blend the young with the old players and find that chemistry. Otherwise, too young a group of kids could ruin the program for 2-3 years.
A lot of these young kids for sure look good. But, let's be honest with what we are looking at on the ice now. Most of the kids that you guys are speaking well of now, seriously can't handle the riggors of a 72 game season. Their bodies are not at their young age built for the physical demand place on the vets in this league. Yet!!

TigerTurf said...

Agree With above statement

------------

About Marek Langhamer I asked him on facbeook and he said he wasn't coming over untill next season.

TigerTurf said...

So it looks like Goaltending won't be as strong as I thought earlier. Their could be some rough spots for them too.

Anonymous said...

surprised at Tambasco's early exit at camp. what are your thoughts as to why he didnt stick around into the exhibition season?

TigerTurf said...

About Joe I neversaw him play so I can't comment on it...maybe others can.

If you want to know his versions of events, search his twitter feed.

Anonymous said...

Tabasco is only 16. Sometimes they want to leave there options open. If they play one game of exhibition then if they decided to go the college route then it messes them up too. I'm very surprised that they cut Aschim already! He never got a full shot to show what he can do.

longtimefan said...

This would have been Aschim's 4th year in the league and i believe he has only 11 goals. I think he has proved what he can and can't do. From watching the game on Wednesday there were young guys ahead of him on the depth chart. Also looking at the team rosters on Alan Caldwells blog there is going to be lots of overagers out there this year looking for places to play so I'm sure we can find another somewhere. Overagers usually come with a not to steep asking price as well.

Anonymous said...

I have to say, even tho it has only been the young guys on the ice I have been very impressed with the level of play. I have read the above comments not to compare until they are on the ice with the vets etc etc. However, as a person who has been attending camps for years and years and years, I have to say, give them some credit. This is one of the most talented groups I have ever seen in camp. I know some will struggle and not make it to the next level. But I have to agree with the person who said that we can be excited about the future. We have some big talent, lots of potential. I have scouted and played for years, there IS something to be excited about out on the ice. A number of these kids will deliver for the Tigers in the coming years. It was a pleasure to watch camp and I really look forward to this year.

Anonymous said...

Remember when the tigers waited for Yashar Farmanara to be released, I think they may do that again, wait and pick up someone. Probably a solid Dman. Why waste a trade when our team looks pretty good. Unless they are going to jump for someone good. But I do not see that to be in the cards.

Anonymous said...

Do you know which 15 and 16 year olds actually signed with the Tigers?

Anonymous said...

I think they have to be signed to play a pre-season game.

Anonymous said...

from the look of the tigers in edmonton this is going to be a loooooooong year at goaltending Kenny Cameron worst area is the area you must be amazing at which is rebound control, teams will key on it and it could cost the tigers, after watching Dawson i think he should make a case for being a starter, hes a giant goalie and at this level that can kill teams (Dubnyk stoned the league for years bc of his size) all in all there is a lot of teams with extra 20 year olds i think the tigers should wait and try to snag an elite stay at home dman (much like Carr) to help out with the defensive side bc that will be our weakness this year more

Anonymous said...

Agreed. I did not think Dawsons numbers looked too bad. I think we have fire power up front to get a lot of shots but defence is what we need. I hope they pick up a solid Dman to help the goalie out. Should be an interesting fight for #1 tendy, but I think Dawson will win the position by Christmas.

Anonymous said...

Honest opinion Kenny Cameron should not be on this team, hes 19 and there is no way he comes back next year as an overage the tigers should move a forward for some depth a goalie and let Cameron go, hes going to hurt the team more than he will benefit it.

In advance to the people who say i havent seen him yet, i went to the black vs white games and he looks as bad as he did last year and thats against guys that wont even play in the WHL

Anonymous said...

were some weak goals, bad glove hand. wondering if you do not have a good point. like the kid, but not sure if he is whl material.

Anonymous said...

he has great positioning and can move pretty well sliding across but his rebound control is just crazy bad

Anonymous said...

I am guessing that since their 1st round pick Ty Schultz did not play this weekend that they have not signed him yet. Do you know.

Anonymous said...

if he is 15 he would of been sent home already

Anonymous said...

Ty is signed

Anonymous said...

We played 4 15 year olds yet. I heard in the summer Ty was signing, but not sure when he did or if he did.

Anonymous said...

Yes thank God someone wants Kenny to leave too,
He's complete garbage Dawson should be backup and we should try to find another goalie and i personally think Bredo should be Captain he is our best defensive forward hands down and he is very disciplined and seems like a fantastic guy

Anonymous said...

Definitely need a goalie, first priority.
Bredo for captain? Did he wear a letter last year? I quess we shall see what Bredo can do this year for defensive forward. AS arguably the best player in the league won't be on his line this year, as he has been the past two years. I'm sure he is a great kid, but am i the only one who sees he can't skate?

Anonymous said...

I am also not for Bredo as captain. He does not contribute offensively at all, especially given he was on a line with Etem!! It is amazing how he did not at least stack up a ton of assists! He IS a great guy but I think a bit quite. Valk has been taking a leadership role, he is inspiring on the ice and a home town kid, would love to see him in the running.
New goalie is needed. We need to trade for a decent goalie. Although, I have not minded what I see from Dawson, just do not think he is ready to start.

Anonymous said...

Why don't you guys just quit bashing the players! It's honestly stupid how so many of you guys have a guy each year to bash on! You guys need to remember these kids are 16-20 years old! Not all the goalies are gonna be like bunz and not all the players are gonna be like Etem! Just wait and see how the goaltending plays out!

Anonymous said...

Wow some tigers fans are so stupid i wouldnt be surprised if they never seen hockey in there life

Bergeron, Maltby, Clearly and John Madden were some of the best two way forwards in the league and are crucial parts to their team winning the stanley cup more recently Jarrett Stoll would be a good candidate....Question if you traded Bredo who would log all the PK time and do it well and who would come back to help the D, Bredo has some of the best defensive skills ive seen from a forward in years not to mention he will fight anyone if they go after their star player (he has fought Petrovic and Hood standing up for players) not to mention i dont believe he has ever missed a game due to injury now i do believe he should be in the ruining for Captain these other 2 idiots above me obviously have no idea what a TWO way forward is and how crucial it is to have him on a top scoring line with guys like Etem and Hunter who pinch way deep in the play and cant rush back to help defensively...............next time you want to state an opinion at least know what you are talking about instead of being an arm chair report that sounds like they just saw one game in their entire life

Anonymous said...

Lol. You make it sound like you shoulda been a GM. Funny as I am guessing you are not!
Chill, opinions are allowed. Some will differ from yours.
I like Bredo and would never trade him and would be happy to see him with a "C" so not agreeing with the other two. BUT they never suggested trading Bredo, they just did not think he should be captain. So your rant seems a little out of place.

Anonymous said...

I like our team, lots of time until we need final roster, lets see how it plays out. Coaches will figure out captains, I just wanna watch hockey.

Anonymous said...

Ya I have to agree , way to much bashing and insults toward players by a few here. Maybe Koules should be "C". seems like a fantastic guy, LOL
You know what they say about opinions..A.. and everybody got one. Somebody needs a Snickers.
So far this year I'm more impressed by the players than I am with the so called blogger fans.
Fan support is Tigers weakest link, IMO.

Anonymous said...

New goalie being brought in. Not sure where he came from. Not sure age. But he is on his way.

Anonymous said...

herd that too

Anonymous said...

herd it in the timmy's line up yesterday morning, a true canadian moment.

Anonymous said...

I too heard about some movement involving Hunter. Maybe some things happening that will please some? Let see how it goes from here. What can we get for Dawson and Hunter ??

Anonymous said...

There is no way we are moving Hunter, I think he is staying until he goes to the NHL. Not like the Tigers to move a top guy.

Anonymous said...

I hope they keep Dawson. Not sure why they would get rid of Hunter, think that is wrong. You don't trade a guy like that unless he is in his last year and you are trading him at deadline as you are not going to make playoffs. No way, he is staying.

Anonymous said...

Not sure why moving our best player would please some?? Confused?? And not going to happen.

Anonymous said...

I still stand by liking our team. I think we can have success with who is on it. I think they will do some fine tuning but that is it. Will be tough to cut some guys, but they are getting cut only because of numbers. Have not heard about the goalie but would not be surprised, competition is good. Would put my life savings that Hunter is a Tiger his whole WHL life. Excited for the season, we are young, talented and it will be enjoyable to watch! Go tigers go!

Anonymous said...

I gotta agree with the long paragraph above some of the Tigers fans are so stupid they dont understand realistic plays and boo when its the right call......ahhhh rednecks

Anonymous said...

Krueger just mentioned the marek langhamer will be in town tomorrow night!

Anonymous said...

Oh, so its the Slovak we drafted? Awesome! And agree, love the team, Hunter is staying (weird weird comment - does not know hockey or Tiger history of trades). Going to be a good season! Will be some bumps but I think it is going to smooth out and we will be a tough team to play! Can't wait to see Doty on the ice! We are definitely a lot bigger this year, probably to protect Hunter, Valk, Cox, etc. Some of the prospects look real good, pretty pumped for the season!

Anonymous said...

No Czech, but yes. Will be pleased to see him on the ice. Will help that position, even if it only provides competition. Tough to cut a goalie, both Dawson and Kenny have worked so hard! And they are good guys! We will see how it plays out, nothing is for sure so far.

Anonymous said...

In recent years we usually see 2 forwards and 2 defensemans getting an "A" who do we see getting them this year????

Anonymous said...

Forwards - Hunter, Valk, Bredo (2 of 3)
Dmen - Theirau and Busneissus
Captain - have no idea!!!!

Anonymous said...

Kessy should be in the running too. Lots of choose from. Coaches will probably make their decision between the forwards based on dressing room leadership. Kessy could be captain, I hear he is quiet but certainly puts himself out there. Dunno, so many quality guys on the team. Will come down to who is doing the talking in the dressing room and on the ice.

Stan said...

Prediction

C Bredo
A Shinkaruk
A Kessy (small chance possibly Leier)
A Busenius (until Theriau returns from injury)

Anonymous said...

If Langhamer is in down good bye Kenny Cameron there is no way we play a 19 year old back up and i agree with the captains above although i could see Valk getting an A and not Hunter bc Hunter is a whiner and thats not good A to represent

Anonymous said...

Hunter leads on the ice, never seen him whine - was given an A last year when Etem was away. Bredo is too quite, A material I think, not C.
Why so much bashing of our guys?? It is sad, we have a great team with great guys. You have probably never met Hunter, I have, he's great, not a whiner and is very well liked in the dressing room. Don't talk about stuff you don't know about!

Anonymous said...

Hunter will have an A

Anonymous said...

I'll probably get bashed for this lol! But I think bredo gets the C! Along with leier getting an A! Shinkaruk will get an A! Theriau will get an A when he's back! Busenius will get an A! And I think valk gets an A until Theriau is back!

Anonymous said...

I think there are a number of guys who are deserving. It is so hard to call from the outside who is a leader in the dressing room. I like all those guys and would be happy to see any or all with letters. We will have a number of guys without letters this year who would be a A or C on many teams! I really do not care who gets what, just as long as hockey starts soon!

Anonymous said...

Will be sad to see Kenny or Dawson go if this new goalie stays. Both guys who have worked hard and deserve better.

Anonymous said...

Marek is drafted so we know he is good, there is no way in hell the Tigers are stupid enough to keep a 18 year old Euro goalie AND a 19 year old Cameron, they will more than likely go with Dawson or a 16/17 year old (more likely Dawson if Marek doesn't pan out) and then next year they draft a goalie pretty high........and in fact im super close with a couple of players and they both have told me Hunter is not perceived well but it has gotten a bit better, remember when i said Hurley wasn't going to be on the team bc he was not liked at all that come from the same guys who said that about Hunter

Anonymous said...

Hunter scores, Hurley does not. Big difference in that. I am guessing that he will be a Tiger for his WHL career. No way they can afford to give up the scoring. Too bad if that is the case, hope the is able to mature and blend with the guys better.

Anonymous said...

I heard he is much more mature this year, maybe humble pie after Russia experience. It seems to happen to a lot of guys who are super talented. Remember Willie told Lupul not to attend unless he changed his attitude. He is liked a lot more then guys like Tristan King. I hope it is just a bit of growing up. But I have heard from some of the guys themselves that he is a lot better. But none deny that Hunter is a team guy, on game day he is a guy who gets people pumped in the dressing room.

Anonymous said...

How is the new Danish Dman? I have not been able to see a game, just wondering if anyone had any insight? I see Hunter at my business all the time, he is always surrounded by guys, seems to get along with a lot just fine. Not everyone on the team will be best buddies, but seems like he has a lot. No way that intense Shawn would let a first rounder go to another team. Danish Dman thoughts anyone?

Anonymous said...

So much negativity. We have talent and youth, should be a good year. Lets leave the team construction up to the coaches. And if you have ever ever ever played a sport, there are always different personalities. A guy who scores 49 goals in his 17 year old season is often got a bit of cockiness to him, happens on all teams, this one it no different. Guys will be jealous of talent. They all got to get over their cockiness and jealousness and work as a team. It seemed to work for lots of guys last year and I am sure it will be the same this year. Let Shawn deal with that.
Great team, lets just support them not tear them apart on hear-say and opinions based on "a guy on the team said...". Go tigers go!!!

Anonymous said...

the post about all the negativity is accurate. You people throwing names of players around, bashing these young men then hide "anonymous" are pretty gutless. Shows little support for players who have accomplished more in youth then most of us had ever.
I heard from insiders that HS9 is a great guy, fun to be around and not cocky at all. But I really feel bad for any goalie who plays on this team. I would hire any player from WHL just on work ethic alone, and ethics is short with this blog. bash away red necks, you give Tiger fans a bad name. It's all BS anyhow.

Danny p

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the support Danny, I totally agree, ethics is ignored with some people who post. I am excited about the team and want to see them do well. I do not pretend to be a GM! Go tigers go!!!!

Anonymous said...

Let's drop the puck can't wait to see these guys play the game they love.

Anonymous said...

Cheers to that!

Anonymous said...

Its not loser - I wrote it, a 29 year old Tiger fan. Let Hunter prove himself before you compare him. Why feel the need to tear down a player who scored 49 goals in his 17 year old season. Bredo was on that line and did not score 20 - what do you make of that? I just do not get ignorant people like you, its too bad. You take the enjoyment out of the game for yourself and others that have to listen to your bullshit.

Anonymous said...

Takes a team to score dude, not just one. You clearly don't know how to play

Anonymous said...

Hunter will go much much much higher then Clarke FYI

Anonymous said...

Can't wait for Sunday so we can change the topic and talk about what happened rather then what could happen :) go tigers go!

Colin said...

Every team has to go with a younger team at some point over the course of 5 years. As a fan who will support the team win or lose, I'm excited for the season to start and look forward to a younger lineup compared to other years. It will be fun to watch the team evolve over the next few years for sure.

Dylan Bredo is so underrated by fans on here. The kid may not be the best skater, but he faired pretty well in the skills competition the Tigers had (was in the final). I think his lankiness makes him look awkward and deceptive. He plays a shut down role against other teams top lines. He was very much instrumental in having a part in most of Etem's short-handed goals last year. I will say he wasn't my favorite his first year here, I questioned why he was, now I wouldn't want him on any other team but ours! Keep up the hard work Bredo!

Hunter Shinkaruk has swagger and he has earned it. Now it is up to him to sustain it. I don't care if he is cocky off the ice around kids his age, what he does on the ice is what is important to me as a fan. A couple occasions where I have talked to him, he was very respectful, well mannered and humble. He is just a kid and I wish more kids had his respect. He comes from a good family, he is in good hands and i'm sure his ego is in check.

Goaltending...with a younger team, I would like to see them go with MacAuley/Euro and battle through the struggles and be that much better in the next couple years.

Valk, hometown kid will be relied upon this year to carry this team offensively. Small in size, thought he started to turn it up in the last quarter of the season last year. Hope he has a successful season.

Koules, gifted kid, will have to adjust to the pace and stronger competition than the camp will provide. Plays with an edge and I like that, excited to see what he can contribute.

Kessey, meh. Possibly might be better offensive 20's available. He comes with a reputation that hurts the team too often. If he can play hard, stay disciplined and make room for our smaller guys and create energy for the team with hard, clean punishing hits then he can and will be an asset.

Busenius. He NEEDS to bring more and standout as a leader. He is a 19yr old vet on this team now and with a young d core, he will need to be that pillar on both offense and defense. He has a bullet from the point, needs to shoot more and play with confidence like he is the best player out on the ice.

Leier. Got to give credit to him for busting his balls and playing his heart out. He doesn't have the finish for the amount of chances he gets. He is average defensively and his skating is average. He plays best when he is mad and feisty and involved. Needs to focus on not being the guy that puts up numbers and more on creating energy and stand up for his teammates this year.

Sorry, didn't expect to go on a rant, just some thoughts came to my mind on what my views are as a fan. In no way am I an armchair GM and maybe other people have different views of these players and they are entitled to. I follow the whole league pretty close and just enjoy it period.

Look forward to the season! Pre-season game Sunday...YES!!!

Cheers!

I expect a 03-09-1992 to be traded to The Tigers real soon. That will fill the 20 year old void currently missing in our lineup.
Just remember, you heard it here first.

Glad to see nobody adheres to that but oh well!

Personally very excited by this Tigers team...they will take their lumps this season, particularly the defence but if they can get past Xmas with their confidence intact, we will be a team no one wants to see in the 2nd half.

And very excited to see Marek Langhamer on the ice today. He will upgrade the position, but I think Ken Cameron will get in a few more games this year and will give the Tigers a chance to win. GO TIGERS GO!

Anonymous said...

Wow, great analysis!!! Should be a good year! Go tigers go!!

Anonymous said...

Kenny and Marek would make one hell of a combination and push each other with opportunity to not overwork one guy like they did last year. Bunz was burnt, overplayed.
