Looks as if Staples beat out Hunker for the final defensive spot.

Wow im shocked Hunker got beat out

Jeez if Theriau is at home you gotta wonder what kind of shape he is in espically with hip surgery you cant do much for recovery except sit and relax

Wow, shocked and bummed. I really liked Hunker. Maybe we will see him back if a trade is made in the late season. I really am sad to see him go!!!

Extremely surprised at the decision. How does staples beat out hunker... I personally enjoyed watching him play. Gunna miss him as a fan..

He brought alot of energy to the lineup. I feel the tigers will miss his in your face attitude, something that is extremely hard to find.

I'm thinking Theriau isn't just sitting home relaxing. Coaching staff sent him home to continue his rehab and fitness. It was healthier for him to go home, then to ride the bus for hours and days on end. I'm hearing they were very impressed with his fitness level, and they rewarded him by sending him home early to continue his recovery. From what I am hearing, he is ahead of schedule, because he has been extremely diligent in his training.

I liked Hunker too, but I'm not the coach. I respect his decision.

being diligent in rehab training for a hip is never good

clouston is out of his mind to take get rid of hunker. That kid has potential. He might regret that choice.

I could see him returning later in the season. I loved Hunker, loved his agressive play. Sometimes I think they move kids with plans for bringing them back. Poor guy, he played well and I think really deserved a spot on the team. Liked his play better then Staples!!

never know could be an attitude issue in the locker room i never noticed staples out there so i guess thats a good thing and as for the physical side Stanton brings a lot more to the table i hear

No, I know Hunker. A real positive nice kid! It is certainly not attitude!!! Probably one of the nicest, respectful and motivated kids I have met so far who are trying to make the team. Want to make it real clear that it is not that. Argue his skill but not his attitude,

Staples looks like he has some mobility but will need to be tuned up to not back into his own end as much....and be aggressive for the puck

I think as he gains experience and gets more comfortable that aspect will improve...once he gains some confidence and the hesitation goes away he could become a lewington like player.

The only viewing I got of Hunker was brief at the intrasquad game where I thought he threaded a few perfect tape to tape passes between feets and sticks.

It is good to know that if/when the Tigers need a Defensive Call-up that Hunker is a good option. Becker was in a similar situation last year and look at his progress.

I hope Theriau is ahead of schedule...hip injuries can take a long long time to heal.

As much as I really thought Hunker was a lot better, I am not a coach, confident that Clouston made the choice for a reason. Staples was the kid scouted by so he must have something! Can't wait for the 21st!!! Go tigers go!!!!!!

Sorry, was scouted by Willy

Ok I was a big fan of Brad and believed Clouston was a step down and was sure he could make some decent moves for the sake of the team so far he is no impressing at all

1. I dont get Hunker over Staples at all, Hunker looked way better in all aspects and i thought he would battle Stanton for a spot to play some game. Staples looks like a project and is defiently not in the same area of Hunker in terms of hockey IQ
2. and this is more breaking news, Hunter being named captain of the Tigers is beyond dumb, a captain is a leader of the team on and off the ice vocal on the ice stands up for team mates and does what ever it takes to make his team play better (Chara, Lindstrom, Richards, Brown) both get tons of respect from players in the locker room and even around the league, Wacey Hamilton is one of the best captain the Tigers have had in a long time, him and Ben Thomson would stand up for team mates no matter what, just because Hunter scores a lot of goals DOESNT QUALIFY HIM TO BE A CAPTAIN, he beaks off at other players when they show him no respect you never hear him talking on the ice or giving directions, our Captain should of been Kessy, Theraiu, Bredo or even Ryckman (even though he is new) they all stand up for the man next to them and play for the man next to them like for f*** sakes Kessy and Ryckman fight anyone who runs/picks on their line mate and in Bredos case he has fought some of the meanest guys in the WHL just because someone ran Hunter (Petrovic and Hood stand out) just because you put up 40 goals a game doesnt make you a leader and in my opionon this is a very stupid move by Clouston

So are you for Hunker over Staples? You said one thing and explained another? I am thinking you wanted Hunker and if so, I agree!
As for captain, I thought Hunter should get an "A", he pumps up the bench with goals but I think the C should have gone to Kessy or Valk. I know Valk does not fight but he has really stepped up as a leader to the young guys, he battles each and every game and is someone the team respects and relays on when the going gets tough. Even Boston would have been in the running or Bredo. I just do not think your Crosby's of the team make the best captains!! And yes, Wacey was one of the best and so was Marr!!!

TigerTurf said...

Hunter is always talking on the bench, or on the ice.

They choose him because he is well liked, his passion and love of the game combined with his skill on the ice is unmatched

TigerTurf you totally switched your opinion, you weren't for him before
The reason im not high on Hunter is if he get shut down offensively he is useless, he doesnt hustle back he doesnt really battle within the boards i just dont get this decision at all there are much better leaders on the team
I wasnt high on Clouston going to GM since he is still dealing with Willys guys and its to bad Brad didnt want to be a GM because he was fantastic
I am huge on Stanton just from scouting him through last year i know the mean streak he has he is a McCue in disguise and Hunker reminded me so much of Cody Blanshan i just thought he would be a great player to develop

TigerTurf said...

I thought Theriau or Bredo may be the front runners pre-season...but then after the exhibition I thought Valk/Shinkaruk were very much in the running as well.

I haven't seen hunker but if he is sorta similar to blanshan i can see why the tigers choose staples....

The tigers philosophy based on their defenseman for the past 8 years is mobility/skill first..smarts 2nd...and its something I don't necessarily 100% agree with...so I can understand where your coming from.....but I could be barking up the wrong tree cause I don't know who else was available compared to those players.

Take a guy like Darren Deitz...grew up in our back-yard was a very smart player....tigers never grabbed him.

Anonymous said...

Deitz is a slow Dman can get burned very easy and often got caught flat footed

Anonymous said...

Tiger Turf Hunter may have to drop the gloves this year! Yukes! Like you said he's always talking well then you just might have to back that up! Wacey was a great captain he stuck up for his team mates and was more then a goal scorer wasn't waiting for someone to come and rescue him all the time! Remember when you played minor hockey and the player on the team that scored the most goals always got the C that's maybe how Hunter got selected??

longtimefan said...

Gretzky, Lemieux, Sackic, Lidstrom, Crosby and the list goes on who were and are captains of there respective teams that don't or didn't fight at all. Leaders lead in different ways and it's not always by dropping the mitts.

Dylan Busenius http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=117531

Enough said, errrr??

Anonymous said...

stats can be misleading Dietz did play with Thrower a lot who is arguably one of the best Dmen in the league right now

Those leaders are also well respected by other teams (minus Crosby the only reason he is the captain is for marketing reasons) they would never get hit and everyone looked up to him, Hunter is the polar opposite of that and i have talked to a couple of Tigers i know personally as well and they dont get why Hunter is the captain most of them wanted Bredo or Boston, from what they told me "Hunter never socializes with the guys and he can be a whiner" and thats a quote from one of them
