Blades Defeat Tigers 6-3

4th Game in 5 nights and I thought it showed on the ice. I thought the Tigers weren't very sharp and it was a bit of a sloppy game from the Tigers perspective. I thought this was a game the Tigers could have won if they had brought a better work ethic, but they didn't deserve the 2 points tonight.

A major factor in tonight's game was the powerplay/penalty kill. The blades were 3 for 4. The Tigers were 0 for 6.

Jake Doty had another highlight reel fight this time with Saskatoon's Jessey Astles. Doty served his penalty played a shift and then wasn't seen back on the ice afterwards. The coaches mentioned on the radio that he sprained a finger and couldn't grip the stick afterwards.

I thought the rookie line showed a lot of spark

Update on Former Tigers
Rhyse Dieno (SJHL La Ronge Ice Wolves) - 15 points in 9 games
 (1st in league scoring)
Brendan Hurley (Dauphin Kings MJHL) - 14 points in 9 games
(3rd in league scoring)
Kenny Cameron (Spruce Grove Saints AJHL)  - 5 Wins 2 losses  2.38 GAA  .886 save percentage

Riley Sheen (Seattle WHL) - 8 points in 7 games
Reid Petryk (Everett WHL) - 5 points in 9 games.

It's good to see these guys not only doing well but excelling with their new teams.

I am not sure about our goaltending. I thought is was aweful tonight. He does not seem to be able to stop much. And is often flopping all over the place and loses sight of the puck. I am not a fan of the style of his play. He gives me no confidence in net. In addition, again, a fast goal in the third. 6 goal against is not acceptable. I just do not think, even though he was drafted, that he belongs in the WHL. I think we need to trade for a decent goaltender! We can not win with Langhammer in net. He puts us in the hole every game.

I wonder if Dieno should still be on the team. Rather then a guy like Sanford. I think he may bring that experience. And we need a goalie who stops pucks. Tonight he could not stop a beachball!

Not a fan of the lack of structure to the goaltending. Would prefer D-Mac in net. Seems to have more structure to his game. Not sure why the coaches are pushing Langhamer to be starter. Not a fan of returning to old school goaltending styles of Dominac Hasek. Most of the night he had no idea where the puck was. Tough for our D to play D and goal having to clear the puck all the time.

Whew, finally somebody agrees with what I think about Tigers euro goaltender. He probably is a good guy but not a WHL goalie and NHL drafted is a joke on Clouston. Both Langhammer and Clouston don't belong with the Tigers. Tigers Coach/GM is the reason we are Loosing.
Thanks for posting what Tigers/Clouston have given up to ice a loosing team, good perspective Tiger Turf. I think all of the guy's mentioned should be on the team. Cameron and Dieno at least belong in WHL. Loosing sucks but, why we loose is obvious to me. "Goalie/GM change" I suppose you don't have to compete to be a Tiger. Just show up late, without equipment and #nhldrafted. Stopping pucks... optional.

Thought the guys looked off tonight. Probably a bit of fatigue, too bad, they had us so pumped after that last game. Rebounds and seeing the puck (even with no one in front) seem to be a problem for Langhammer. Not sure he is our starter. Too bad guys, regroup and lets show Brandon what we can do!

Saskatoon were playing their 4th game in 5 nights, with the last three all being on the road, so using the old fatigued excuse doesn't work. Below average goaltending, that one will work.

Tough one, leave it behind, get ready for Brandon! Missed seeing Labelle out there, he always brings his A-game. Agreed on Langhammer. Hope to see Dawson start next game.

I like the way Broadhead hits maybe he can be a shit disturber like Dorsett.

Marek should of never played tonight 3 games in 3 nights is brutal on a goalie and our coach is an idiot for putting him through that. There is also a huge difference between Junior A and WHL and why would you bring up Dieno a 19 year old who wont be back next year that was never productive and take a spot of a developing 16 year old.....give your head a shake

Interesting that the night before when our goaltender kept us in the game in the first period and gave us a chance to win there were no comments and tonight people want to draw and quarter the guy. Three power play goals and two on odd man rushes, kind of tough to put all the blame on the goalie. Think they need to put Valk back between Shinkaruk and Koules, Bredo isn't the guy.

Honestly feel that the problem starts in goal. Hard to play when you have no confidence in the tender. PP and PK needed to be a lot better also, do not deny that. But when the tender can not make saves that are unscreened then there seems to be a problem. I think we need to trade for a goaltender.

Great to see other exiting past players doing well.
I have a question: Why do we have two guys on our penalty kill that refuse to win battles?
One guy can rip it up only when Etem is around? The other scored 5 goals on a line last year where his line mates scored 110 goals.
Let's rest Shinkaruk for the powerplay. He excels with the extra man on our powerplay.

I think we need more traffic infront of the net. But we are shooting. Guys are tired, 3 in a row. It definately plays a role. They gotta get a good days rest and back at it! Go tigers go!

Looking back at some of the trades/releases we made - we'd be a much better team with those players and were better. Again, ultimately -coach/management is responsible for those poor decisions. Time for change.

Ryckman isn't what I thought he would be, rarely uses the body, scared of the puck it seems. Staples and Stanton are better, play then and quit wasting time on this 20 yr old

FYI the Tigers were playing their 4th game in 5 nights as well.

Just my guess but McCauley will be in goal on Tues - you play until you lose! Doesn't seem to be working to well - neither goalie gets to know they are the "number one".

TigerTurf said...

Like longetimefan said 3 PP goals and 2 odd man rushes....the problem wasn't just the goalie last night.

The moves the coaches made will benefit the Tigers in the long run, and I posted the stats of the former Tigers because I couldn't believe at what kind of starts they have all had.

Anon 11:04, Mcauley played on Friday in Red Deer and lost, while Langhammer played very well Saturday and thus the start Sunday. Anon 8:12am at this point it shouldn't matter who is number 1 or 2, when your number is called be ready to play, pretty simple to me. Both of the should realize they are battling for the top spot.

Anonymous said...

I agree with both of you. However, it's been mentioned many times this year about defensive zone coverage. The players lack of staying on the right side of the puck AND their check; doesnt constitute poor goaltending.

CatFan said...

It was a brutal game all around. The team looked dog tired, the defence gave up multiple 2 on 1's, the forwards couldn't get it together and goaltending was poor. I would like to see Dustin start more games in a row, does management feel they have to play Langhamer because he is a Euro and they feel obligated? It seems strange because his play has been inconsistent. Also, play Labelle already. His physical presence would have helped last night.

How come Clouston is not being held accountable? We hold players responsible but coach,GM hides . He has made several poor decisions including euro goalie pick, cutting players that were dedicated Tigers now performing real well. If anyone gets cut going forward it should be Clouston, he is way overpaid for what he does and we continue to bash players, when he should be held accountable. He has no idea how to manage goalies or players. Players have little respect for him and obviously they are confused and not performing with him running the show we pay to see. Time for a change with something other than players, cut the underachiever coach,GM.

The changes clouston made will benefit the team in the long run. Hold your horses everyone.

I am surprised no one called me on out saying Becker should be a staple on the first PP unit.

As last night Becker was on the first unit for a bit and he didn't fare well giving up a penalty shot chance.

Becker offensively shoots first. That's the selfishness of some players. Now some of you will argue that, but he is more concerned with his own personal stats. BUT.. Defensively is not a 1st pairing Dman. He simply doesn't play strong enough in his own zone for a big guy.
Our defense is VERY young. And on a stronger team Becker would be in the 3 rd pairing.
I mentioned some time ago on here that dmen scoring too bar and down from the point , looks great on the highlight reel. But in this game, a defense that hits the pads 80-90% of the time will trolls more points offensively. Ideally, hitting the pads gives our club a second chance of scoring.
Again, some of you will argue that point as well. As well, some of you will say there is not such thing as a poor shot. Go sit down atthe rink some day during practice, and tell me why dmen are screamed at for shooting pucks 3-4 feet off the ice. It's because forwards can't be expected to drive the net , when pucks are hitting them in the head. Becker does have a good wrist shot that is low and at the net. If he uses that more. He will see better results statistically.
Our defense although young , will look good for a period or two against most teams. Against the stronger teams, they will continue to come up on the wrong side of the game sheet. We blame the goalies a lot on here. But next time you look at the majority of the breakdowns that result in goals against. Have a real good look at where our defensive zone coverage is on the play.

Don't worry TigerTurf, everyone makes mistakes haha, as noted above once Theriau returns to full health Becker will return to the 3rd pairing behind the likely pairings of Theriau-Busenius and Ryckman-Lewington or Theriau-Ryckman and Busenius-Lewington

Most of Becker's shots are down low though. I think he has only teed up once or twice this season.

I love defenseman who can break up the cycle, play smart in their own zone, and have a good first pass. Becker has only played 25 games as well. He will get better after developing that experience base.

Quite a few of the goals against have been from the forwards not covering the trailer/tunnel vision not watching the far side guy.

They improve on that aspect they cut down on 1/3 of the oppositions goals.

Review the video footage. The 2 on 1's should have been easy saves. The guy with the puck shot both times and point blank beat Langhammer. He barely moved. I do not think that Clouston is to blame. Langhammer is drafted to the NHL, not far off what Bunz was, why would you not take a chance? But now it is clear that he is not what we need, I think something has to give. The 2 on 1's were easy saves, he is just not good enough.

It seems clear that there are a couple problems. Some are readily fixable such as the PP, the PK, needing someone infront of the net to deflect or get rebouds and a bit more battle for the puck. That stuff we have seen the Tigers do, we know they are capable, just did not happen. That will come with practice, repetition and sticking to "the plan". However, the thing that remains a problem, that I am not sure if there is an easy fix is goaltending. Yes, the 2 on 1's were easy saves, he does not cover the puck, he loses sight of the puck, he flops around etc. He got praises for the PG game because he played well, but even during that game I did not have a lot of confidence. Everyone gets lucky, everyone will have a great game once in a while. That is the first decent game, all the rest show major flaws in his style of play. This is a problem we can not fix without a trade.

Anonymous said...

I think they will be looking for a new tender. That is the weak link in the team. The team is not given the chance to win every night, in fact they are often having to dig out of a 3-0 hole that they have been put into.

Anonymous said...

Good luck getting a goalie this year everyone seems to have an overage goalie and horrible back up we just need to ride it out. But Clouston shouldn't even be GM I never understood that move there are much better options out there and I loved Brad as a GM that Doty trade was an amazing steal

Playing in net is the toughest job in hockey.

Not sure why a couple of you have the hate on for Becker. He's been one of the most pleasant surprises of the season and has been called the best defenseman on the team multiple times on this blog. I'm not saying he is and he certainly is not perfect but still doing well. I've seen most of the games and have not seen a selfish player. Maybe a wrong shoot vs pass decision from time to time but nothing to call selfish. Almost all the key players on the team have been asked to expand their roles from last year and mistakes are being made all over the ice. We could find something in each player’s game and in the coaches and GM to be quite critical of. This is a very young team. There is a lot of talent here and we are going to have to live with the mistakes for now. The team works hard and they will get it.

Just for interest sake Portland has 2 starters in Carruth and Lanigan. I can't see keeping both of them, but I'm not sure having an older goalie is the right move for a rebuilding team.

I like the Tigers team been a fan for years. I have been folowing our rookies stats and think they will all be awesome. I like the goalies too remember fans this is a team game keep the blame game to yourself and watch the team rebuild it it still an exciting game in my mind...you cant win them all!

Anonymous said...

At least one Clouston will win.

Anonymous said...

Going out on a limb here. Langhammer will not start tonight , and we win 6-4. Cox ,Leiersy, and Pearce will figure in the scoring. What's your prediction?

Anonymous said...

I agree with loving the young guys and it is a rebuild. I love the Tigers thru thick and thin and always have. I have said a number of times on this site that our young players just need time but we have so much talent on D and forward. But I think we are losing a lot due to goaltending. Yes it is a hard job but that can not be an excuse. The puck needs to be stopped, especially when you have view of the puck, that is not being done. It is obvious that the basics of goaltending are not there. The fact that he loses sight of the puck because he is flopping around like a fish is a big problem. I would not change any of the team other then a goalie. I know we will lose because of inexperience, cool, but we need to have a tender who will give us a chance to win each night, right now ours digs us in a 3-0 hole more times then not. You can not win that way!

How are we going to put a positve twist after this 7-6 loss to wheatkings. Got your wish and dawson did play. If ya want to call it that. Both duds in the pipes.
13GAA in past two games. Clouston does not look like a keeper either.

Why was Rhyse Dieno sent away in the first place?? He's a great playmaker, unselfish player and was popular teammate. tearing up sjhl. When he was on first line last seaon he was point or more a game. Couston never gave him a chance. If Sheen and Petryk are in whl how can Dieno not be? Kenny Cameron same issue. Maybe clouston is one who needs to be sent away? Sanford guys like that should be playing more elsewhere. Wake up med hat!
