Giants Drop the Tigers 6-1

Edit: Tyler Bunz was sent down to Stockton of the ECHL Saturday morning. He had an excellent AHL camp, but the plan was for him to see a lot of games in the echl this year.

 1st Period

Last night the Tigers got out to a quick 3-0 lead. Tonight it was the other way around and a bit uglier.

48 seconds into the game the Giants rushed down the Ice on 3 on 2. The puck would get passed to the trailer and he fired a shot on net. Langhamer stopped it but left a rebound, in which Riley Kieser smoked it in. 1-0 Giants

Cain Franson would carry the puck into the zone, circle back and draw Derek Ryckman over to him. Franson fired a high shot on net.  Langhamer would give up another rebound right onto the stick of Brett Kulak who pinched in from the point and buried it. 2-0 Giants

The Tigers would call a Timeout, but it didn't seem to help as right off the next draw Tyler Lewington would get called for tripping.

On the ensuing poweplay Cain Franson would walk off the half-wall and take a shot through traffic. The puck somehow found its way passed Marek Langhamer, and trickled in. 3-0 Giants

That would end Marek Langhamer's night, giving way to Dawson MacAuley. MacAuley was tested immediately stopping a breakaway chance.

Late in the period on a mini 2 on 2. Marek Tvrdon would make a nice move but ran out of real-estate as he crashed into Dawson MacAuley. The puck would lay at the side of the net with MacAuley down and Jackson Houck would get his first of the season. 4-0 Giants

2nd Period

Dawson MacAuley comes with up two awesome saves early in the period.
About 6 minutes into the period the Tigers switched up their line combos, and it has seemed to give them a spark.

On the powerplay. Well officially it was not credited as a PP goal, but Kyle Becker threw a shot from the point on net. Curtis Valk would get his stick on it for a tip and put the Tigers on the board
4-1 Giants.

The giants still managed too many scoring chances for my liking, but the Tigers looked a lot better after they switched up their lines. Trevor Cox was robbed with an open net on a rebound by Vancouver Goaltender Tyler Fuhr.

3rd Period

Giants would strike a couple more times in rapid succession early. David Musil would fire a shot from the point and it would bounce off the back of Tristan Sieben and into the net. 5-1 Giants

14 seconds later the Giants would strike again. Elgin Pearce's breakout pass would get intercepted and the giants would generate a 2 on 1 down low.  Marek Tvrdon would give a perfect cross ice pass over to Nathan Burns, who tipped it in the open net.. MacAuley had no chance on it. 6-1 Giants

Game Over

 Thoughts
Marek Langhamer had some troubles with his rebounds early, and that quick 3-0 giants lead seemed to deflate the Tigers. This game could have been uglier, Dawson MacAuley made some high quality stops in relief. I thought the Vets didn't show up tonight, and it was a disappointing effort all around. Changing up the lines in the second period created a small spark but the Tigers couldn't establish a consistent fore-check.

I thought these past 5 periods the second and third efforts in the Tigers game has dissipated. I wasn't happy with the efforts of some of the veteran players. Perhaps its getting used to the road again, but I wanna see the "pop" back in their game before it turns into a bad habit.

One player that stood out for the right reasons in both road games was defenceman Spenser Jensen. Jensen looked really good and was a big physical presence on the ice.

Note: I will be unable to recap Saturdays game against Kamloops.

Holy s$?t that was horrible!!! Did anyone in a tiger uniform want to play? That was not tiger hockey and I hope they guys see tht. They are capable of so much more. Hoping they regroup and play a simple, tiger style of game tomorrow. Nothing to lose!

Great game summary. Keep up the great work.

That was ugly. I think there are some bruised egos. At least I hope there is. Now I hope they get mad and tomorrow come out with the idea to get even. Show the spark again, play the whole game, and never say die. Go tigers go!! Brush this off, get pissed off!!!

They need a physical forward and one that will fight and have other fighter him, Doty is fantastic at protecting players but cant be used to spark the team whenever player on every team is afraid of him. My vote is Colin Jacobs personally but anyone of physical nature will do

further reading on Jacobs i thought he was 18 not 19, scratch that a 18 year old that is physical and can provide sparks since Boston, Broadhead haven't been doing that, although it is nice to see Boston step up offensively

Could be ugly in Kamloops tonight.

Are some of the boys having a little too much fun out west? Not sure, but maybe they might have to get their minds back on hockey again. I know their 3-1 start was because of playing weaker teams but have to step it up against the stronger teams or it could get a bit nasty.

Van was a weak team. Victoria was not a strong team. W should have had both games with ease. W need to play Tiger hockey, not someone else's game. We need to do what we did in the first few games and play simple hockey, getting the puck in deep and lots of shots. They can do this!! Go tigers go!!!

Vancouver was in last place before the 2pts last night. So far both our goalies have bombed out, and not much help from team. Clouston is not looking too good with how he handles goalies. My heart goes out to these guy's no experience ,no back-up, and Marek does not speak english. Must be tough. I'm thinking This is going to be a long bus ride home. Ya it will be ugly in Kamloops

They will shake it off. Remember the forwards the Tigers have is the youngest group in the league. Their will be games where the offense doesn't come out.

Such a young team, new goalies have to eventually happen, so we knew games like this would happen. I like this team a lot but am realistic that bumps are going to happen along the way. Hope they compose themselves tonight and play simple. Clear the front of the net and make sure they help Dawson out. If he can see a shot he will get it. Play simple!!!!!

I was watching the game and noticed that Langhammer is still wearing the pads that seem to be Bunz's old ones. Is this not weird? Anyone know why?

es Langerhammer is wearing Bunz's pads. Why would Bunz need them???Whata difference does that make after three weeks of wearing them?
Our team is very young for sure. three 17 year olds. two 18 year olds, one 16 year old. Not hard to shine as the top dman here.
Forwards- starting with our first line have tobe better! Captain has to be willing to take a hit once in a while, to keep the puck deep. Letting the puck work instead of over handling it all the time in open ice is hurting that line big time. The play stands still and easier to defend against, when our captain over handles the puck. He is a smart enough player, and will be able to figure that out.
Back pressure is also lacking, the defense need that every night from their forwards.
Good luck vs Loops. Go Tigers Go

A couple of comments regarding the above posts: we have 3 16's in the line-up not 1, Marek does speak English pretty well so this is not a problem; as for ragging the goalies was Dustin not the 3rd star last night against a team that is ranked in the top 10 in the nation? We are rebuilding and have to have time to grow as a team and make adjustments. This was a tough road trip but a good learning experience. They will be taking their lumps in the first half but hopefully will improve big time in the second. Let's have patience and see what happens!

Need a physical body in the top six...We are horrible.

HOrrible is a bit strong. We have lost the last 3, young team, gonna happen. Did you not anticipate this? There will be ups and down with such a young team.

Cat Fan your right. Second half will be better.
Shinkaruk disappeared on this road trip. We need him playing his "A" game versus the top teams, and not the lower teams. He can not be afraid to take a hit. The boads are a big part of this game. If they weren't, then we would be watching pond hockey. He may not be in the top 20 in the draft unless he figures that out.
Our defense is in trouble, if Becker is your best defenseman. And he is playing well., just not a top 2 defenseman yet. I do like his early season play.

I read comments as , what it is. Nobody ragging goalies, young team is a cop out excuse, they cut guys with experience , Dieno is lighting up sjhl, Cameron hot in ajhl, . The inexperience tigers appear to have is GM, building this years team leaves little room for error. And yes lacking physical in top six. Above comments appear to make sense to me. Rookie GM is responsible IMO. Players do the best they can. Even with bunz and etem out last year we were at least close or winning. If a guy gets hurt team will suffer this year. What the heck I will cheer for Tigers, but think it will be a long season ending early. Hope I'm wrong!

Wish they would have sent Bunz back. I think he would have seen a ton of ice of course and with a young defence he would have had a lot of shots on him. Too bad. Lets hope one of our present goalies will step up. Guess we have to move on at some point. Was the same as when Keets left..... but then we had Holfeld and I think our two tenders have more ability then he did. Frustrating times!

We need to go with a consistent goalie on a regular basis, these constant changes can wreck confidence and ruin potential, Clouston is showing his old Portland colours

Sorry, your idea is to keep playing the guy who let in 3 goals on 8 shots? Really? Allow them to battle for the starter position. Especially for the first month or so of the season. Then the "winner" should be starting most of the time. Langhammer was played for the last couple because he was playing well until he imploded. And Dawson previously was playing until he imploded.

It hurts me to see the goalies take the brunt of blame for losses. But I guess that comes with the territory. Yes it has been a rough start. Blown out in first 5 minutes is brutal. I'm not sure euro picks are helping the Tigers. They should take there losses and cut him loose. To show up without equipment is a sign he expects a handout. No Canadian boy get the free ride euro does. And never even tried out like the other guy(s). agree Clouston is starting to look pretty bad. Hope oil kings game is in our favour.

Inside Scoop : Theriau skated with the team on their Western road swing. Is expected to join the team Wednesday. Apparently in great condition. Coaches pleased with his recovery. Good luck to him.

I think some people are hitting the panic button a bit early in the season. It's going to take 15-20 games before some of these young guys get comfortable with the league and the pace of play. Our goalies had no experience at all and our defence consists of 3 rookies in Staples, Becker and Stanton, Two guys who were part timers last year in Jensen and Lewington. The only two with experience are Busenius, who hasn't been a top 4 guy in his career and Ryckman. Right now they are struggling getting the puck up to the forwards and thus are spending a lot of time in our own zone which is creating lots of shots on our goaltenders. There's going to be a learning curve here for a while so i wouldn't get to stressed about it. If it's still happening 20 games in well then it's a big issue.

My eyes are getting a little old, but I have watched the plays of week video over and over, paused it and slow motioned it and on the one Medicine Hat goal which was shot from the point does not appear to have been deflected at all. Actually the MH stick in front of the net appears to not even be on the ice. But then again my eyes might be getting a little old

TigerTurf said...

It is too hard to see

When the play was live Valk immediately jumped up in celebration and the goalie has a double reaction, where he dropped then moved his pad afterwards and that's often a sign the puck hit something.

If the Tigers dont pull their socks up we must trade some vets, if we are truly rebuilding then they need to make it a full rebuild not constantly have 7-8 spots come open for rookies, personal opinion would say we trade Hunter at deadline even though he does come back next year you could grab so many high picks and prospects from Saskatoon and it is only more than usual because Saskatoon will pay more because he is not in his final year, this tigers team is going to get mauled in their first series if we play a team like Edmonton, Kootney, Brandon, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon they all have dominate defense and will completely shut down the Tigers top line, Musil and Wes shut down Hunter and they arent even amazing shut down D

Anonymous said...

Ummmmm, no

Watch how much points Hunter gets tonight on even strength I guarantee he gets none
