Oil Kings Defeat Tigers 4-2

Cam Lanigan is the Starter Tonight. He first appeared in the whl with the Edmonton Oil Kings and is facing them in his Tigers Debut.

First Period
Tigers get off to a good start. On their second Shift Curtis Valk and Trevor Cox went down on a 2 on 1. Valk fed Cox a nice pass who tipped a pass five hole passed Edmonton netminder Lauren Brossant. 1- 0 Tigers

FIGHT
Dylan Busenius fed Trevor Cox a bit of a suicide pass and Oil King defender Stephen Shmoorkoff stepped up and leveled Cox with a high hit.

Dereck Ryckman immediately stepped up and engaged Shmoorkoff in a fight. It was a short Fight but it was all Ryckman as he fed Shmoorkoff knuckle sandwiches until the refs stepped in.Shmoorkoff would go the the dressing room leaking.

Shmoiirkoff would get a major for elbowing, and Ryckman would get the instigator. It would still lead to a Tigers Powerplay.

On the powerplay, Miles Koules would feed Curtis Valk at the point. Valk onetimed it past Lauren Brossoit for a 2-0 Tiger Lead.

It looks like the coaches were preaching defense, as the Oil kings only had1 decent opportunity on net.

Second Period
Would belong to the Oil Kings

Steven Owre was would get called for a tripping penalty after over-reaching and knocking an Oil King player over. On the powerplay Dylan Wruck would blast a shot from the point. Curtis Lazar would get his stick on it, tipping it past Cam Lanigan top shelf.   2-1 Tigers.

The Tigers defense would get caught. Keegan Lowe from his blueline would feed a very long pass to Mitch Moroz in behind the Tigers Defense. Morox would have a mini breakaway and beat Lanigan blocker side. 2-2 TIE

The Tigers Defense is playing a lot better, but a PP goal, and a slight hiccup by Busenius and Ryckman would leave the game tied heading into the third period.

Third Period
Controversial play. Off the rush Keegan Lowe ran into Cam Lanigan knocking off his glove and stick. The puck would bounce into the corner where Oil King Edgars Kulda would immediately throw the puck on net. The puck would bounce off Lanigan's pad into the net from a bad angle.
The refs would go upstairs and take while but ruled it a goal. 3-2 Oil Kings.

Some bad puck luck. A tip in, a controversial goal, and a goal where an Oil King player was cherry picking led to another loss.

Cam Lanigan couldn't be faulted for any of the goals, and played well in his Tiger Debut. It just seems like whenever the Tigers are playing good, they fall victim to some bad luck, or a bad goal. Overall the game was pretty boring, as their wasn't a whole lot of offensive chances, but the Tigers had a couple chances late in the game to tie.

Next Action: Wednesday Night Kelowna Rockets Come to town.

Where is Hunter? Every game I listen to they say he is a non-factor. He is collecting points but is not the powerhouse we need. He looks frustrated.

Busineus is horrid. He should be traded. He has no composure with the puck. He does not help this team at all. He was allowed to hide in the depth previously but now that he is a lead guy his flaws are so apparent. I thought he made plays that really cost us. Disappointing from a vet. Our defence is killing us. Their mistakes cost us each and every game. It is frustrating to watch. Why they can not just go out and play simple defence is beyond me. Why these stupid passes and complicated plays. Just get the puck out, get the puck up, put the puck in deep, watch for cherry-pickers, cover your men, beat people to the puck....... quit carrying the puck and making low chance passes out of the zone. The loss falls on the shoulders of the defence. Busineus should be stripped of that "A' and sold for a bag of pucks!!! Was so terribly disappointed in his play. Hard for the forwards to play aggressive when they have to worry about the poor decision making of this guy on the ice! Trade trade trade!!!

Can we ever win again??????

Anonymous said...

This is getting hard to watch....... reminding me of the late 90s when we could not win a game to save our souls. Can someone, anyone step up and play defence? Anyone?
Lanigan, good game. Sorry the defence are such terrible players who make stupid plays...... especially the Dman wearing the "A". Tonight that "A" was not for assistant, that is for sure. Or maybe is was assistant to the other team.

Tough to watch after the 1st. Lanigan looked real good. Our defence did not have a good night. Nice to see Ryckman step up for Cox!

Anonymous said...

hmmm Bus with a -3 tonight maybe people will start realizing defence is the problem on this team, good on ryckman defending his team mates thats something i love to see

Anonymous said...

So many losses, getting tough. Lanigan was the bright light.

Anonymous said...

Bus was not good. He has been a guy that I expected more out of. Tough when you have young guys around you but this game I thought the young guys on defence were better. Time for a change?

Anonymous said...

I wish Hunter could get out of this funk. I recall Etem experienced a similar thing after returning from his first world juniors. Hope Hunter can fight it off and get back to his great play! Relax Hunter and play your game!

Judy said...

Always a tiger fan, still a tiger fan, but it is during these times that it is rough! Come on guys, you are better then this!! Play with confidence!

Anonymous said...

It is weird, I just dont think the tigers should be this bad. With goalie fixed, who played well, we should be able to win. I was surprised by tonights outcome. Defence is a problem but it does not seem like it should be. Anyone else think this? I am baffled as to why we suck.

Anonymous said...

Its about time that guys like Cox, Valk, Hunter step up to the plate when they get run over because they skate around with their head up their a@@ they should start taking matters into their own hands they should not wait for players to bail them out all the time!!! Hunter will never play the next level!! Strip the C off him and give it to Lanigan that is about how much sense it makes him wearing the C. The last thing we were up 2-0. Clouston, Kruger, Joe have to go!! Fire all of them now!! We may win 15 games if we make a change now.

With losing either Ryckman or Theriau due to the 20 year old situation will we be down a dman? wonder who would fill in?
Tough loss, takes time to turn things around. Long season ahead, it will get better.

Anonymous said...

We find ourselves at the bottom of the pile - I don't like being there. Tiger fans are not use to this. Fire Clouston.

Anonymous said...

Busineus is a good top 7 defensman spruce grove is caling for him!

Anonymous said...

Hoping Hunter pulls out of tough times. He is dynamite, just has to fight through this tough spot. This will make him a better player. Etem went through rough patches, made him a better player. Hunter, we are behind you! Can't wait to watch the next game from the stands!

It's amazing to be at the same game and see things differently. If the tigers can't finish empty net oppertunities or score on power plays or come out and play more than 1 period of hockey how do you expect them to win. As for the forwards where were our big guns tonight. There's some lack of offence If you ask me. And to blame one person for a teams loss seems a little ignorant. Like someone who wishes they could have played hockey but didn't and doesn't have a clue about the system the Tigers play.aybe you should interview for head coach since you seem to have all the answers

Anonymous said...

It never ceases to amaze me. When times are good people love ya when times get tough support and true fanship just doesnt exist

Anonymous said...

Inside Scoop: Not sure why you guys don't think defense shouldn't be a problem. I have been saying it for many weeks. We are very very young and inexperienced on the backend.
Help is on the way!! Theriau will be ready according to the WHL Weekly Report first week of November. that will be a huge help. He looks very good in practices.

Anonymous said...

Our young Dmen seem to have a lot of talent but not a lot of experience. Ryckman is my favorite vet Dman as it stands. He is a big guy who will drop the gloves for a team mate and does well on defence. Bus is the guy I am not sure about. -10 on the season is not good. -3 in a 4-2 game. He has not been playing to the level we need. Maybe a trade with a 20 year old and him to bring in a good dman. Hate getting down on the guy but I guess the tough call gotta be made.

longtimefan said...

There is a reason Busenius has been a 5 or 6 guy throughout his career, because he is a 5 or 6 guy period.
Another issue and i've said this before is we are to small up front, lots of skill but they can't get to the net, tough to score from the perimeter.
Jayden Hart, good size, physical and a scoring touch is sorely missed in this lineup. Did he not play the last time we won? Just my opinion.

Anonymous said...

Hate to pile on but Busenius now -13 in the early season. Scary.

longtimefan said...

One more thing. How was the Oil King third goal not goaltender interference?

Anonymous said...

Agreed Clouston is the weak link on this team.He is way in over his head, yes make him accountable for the mess this team is in not just one D man to blame that all of you are pointing fingers at!! Did Clouston coach a team named the Bull Frogs before coming to the W?

Anonymous said...

Lets make this the last time Hunter gets compaired to Etem. Huter has showen without Etem he is a very average player to say the best! Wonder how long before Clouston has him playing on the 4th line? If Clouston is still there? Boston is so hot and cold looks like another cold night Sat night. I think Boston will be gone come the dead line.

Anonymous said...

I think the team is playing well giving a competitive effort every night. They just need to keep the the momentum going when they get ahead they need to play a smarter defensive game. Some of the players are exciting to watch and have a high skill level and bring a great effort to the rink every shift. Some others need to pass more and not be so selfish around the net where many opportunities are missed for more offense.

CatFan said...

What a bunch of crap! We are a young team and many of these losses could have gone our way with a bounce or two and decent goaltending. If they keep working hard our luck will change. We have addressed the goaltending. We knew going in that defence would be green, but they have to learn. You can't start trading everyone away when times are tough (Saskatoon, anyone??). I thought we would struggle til Xmas and the second half would be a big improvement and we could still make the playoffs. If not, then we are building for the next couple of years and fans have to realize that. Being a fan means supporting them always, not just when they win. It's o.k to point out flaws but let's not zero in on one player all the time or be calling for Clouston's head after one losing stretch.

Anonymous said...

Keep that Pearce guy going. He seems to be a real responsible player and nice wheels.

Anonymous said...

This is a young team which is good for the future. The future is just not this year. And that is ok because we are not in the same level as Oil Kings, Portland or Kamloops. Play and develop the rookies and give Clouston room to build for next season. The power play is an immediate problem and if they put the puck in the net on their opportunities last nights game would have been a victory

Anonymous said...

We are too small up front....We got rid of our size and grit...Skill only works when size and grit opens ice for it....Skill will score pretty goals but night in night out, they won't win games; can't handle the physical grind..Clouston engineered these changes...He does not see the big picture.

Anonymous said...

Inside Scoop: The players respect Boston Leier. He has alot more value with less ice, then some kids on the first line.

Anonymous said...

People who think Theriau is better than Ryckman make me laugh

Stix said...

Who ever said Boston will be gone by the end of the season is crazy. Day in and day out he is the hardest working player out there. He plays both ends of the ice. You clearly know nothing about hockey!!!
I think we will see an improvement when we can get a few games with this new goalie, get Hart back and really be able to committ to a system on D now that we have a tender who can stop a puck. Agreed, it will be rough until Xmas and then we will get better! Go tigers go!

Anonymous said...

Ryckman is a wayyyyyyyy better Dman then Theriau. I think Theriau is out of a job. He is a 5th or 6th Dman at best.

Anonymous said...

Kids dosn't seem to be playing for Clouston...Bottom line.

Anonymous said...

Edmonton is really on top of their game and a highly ranked team. THe fact that we lost 3-2 (minus the EN as that does not represent our play) is not bad! When the goalie has been with us for a day! Come on, give the guys a couple of practices before you fire the coach! Geez!!

Anonymous said...

Can not believe that goal was allowed, that would have been our game. Tough, the bounces are not going our way. The winds will change, they always do.

Anonymous said...

We are a young team on offence
Our D has 2- 20 year olds (one will go)
a brutal 19 year old (hes got to go)
then a 2 18 year olds and 3 17 year olds
which is an average aged D
Our goltending is built like we are making a run this year or next which is a horrible GM move having a 20 year old and a 18 year old that has not been coached.

Anonymous said...

Not to mention Ryckman is completely healthy and stands up for his team mates no matter what, Theriau just came off a huge surgery, wasnt good last year and we dont know if the hip will nag him all season. If they let Ryckman go its like hitting on 19 in blackjack

Anonymous said...

I like Clouston as a coach. No question. I think we need to be patient. It is pretty much a rebuild and this is what happens. And this is the WHL, you go through swings. It is the nature of the beast. Have you never watched the WHL before? Crap years happen, part of it. Tigers rarely see one. So lay off Clouston. He is doing his job.

longtimefan said...

"Kids dosn't seem to be playing for Clouston...Bottom line."

Don't agree with that statement at all. Work ethic has not been an issue.

"Our goltending is built like we are making a run this year or next which is a horrible GM move having a 20 year old and a 18 year old that has not been coached"

What was he supposed to do wait and hope one of them pulled it together which may or may not have happened. I still think Langhammer can be a decent goalie but with a young team they need to have some saves made at key times. Problem is they might have the same scenerio next year.

Anonymous said...

I do not blame Clouston for our goaltending situation, Dawson was a high draft pick, he did not pan out at all. That is the reason that we are in this situation. Had Dawson been the goalie they thought he would have taken over like Bunz did.

CatFan said...

Is Jayden Hart sick with the same virus? If he is this is getting a little scary for him at his age as it has been going on for a month now. Hope he feels better soon, we need him!

Inside Scoop,If Theriau wasn't any good as you mentioned last year, and I quoted you.
Theriau's numbers from the past two seasons as a Tiger are as follows:
GP G A Pts +/-
85 4 22 26 30

And he did this while playing on a bad hip over the last year and a half since he has been with our club.
Yup, those are awful numbers!! Just imagine how poorly he would have played on two good hips.
Anon:: Give your head a shake!!Let's give this kid some respect. He toughed it our for our Tigers with a bad hip, and continued to be a great addition to the team in the dressing room and off ice as well. Every kid I have talked to about Theriau, says he is an awesome team-mate. Let's wait to see this kid comeback healthy, before we grind him up through your shredder.
The kid was hurt, and yet we continue too ride this kid hard. Seriously???

Jayden has hurt his knee I think, that is what I heard. It happened in the game that he returned in (the last one we won). I hope he gets better too as I think he makes a ton of difference. He is so far superior to Bredo as far as being an offensive centre and he is a guy who is not afraid to get infront of the net!

Anonymous said...

The problem with Dawson was development you cant just have him down in Midget for 2-3 years jump him up to the WHL and expect him to be amazing he needs to gradually get use to the speed shot power and dynamics of the game, it made Bunz and Keetley much better goalies and they werent brought in as an 18 year old with the chance of being a starter

Anonymous said...

OT: will anyone but a Kamloops Blazer ever win player of the week ever again?! Man those guys like Lipon and Smith and Ranford are tearing up the league, they deserve every one of those awards.

You guys are brutal in Medicine Hat as fans. You do not
stand up for your team. Because they are losing games does not mean you don't support them. Considering the minutes Busenius has played with 9 points in 13 games he isn't doing too bad. Unfortunately you need everybody to play every night to succeed. The goaltender situation on this team has not been the greatest and sometimes your in the wrong place at the wrong time. The comment made by anonymous is brutal from him have you ever strapped on a pair of skates yourself or even played the game. Maybe if the Tigers would have used him more right from the get go maybe things would be different. There again always relying on the ones that they think are doing great, but where are they when things get tough. Busenius has the best composure with the puck out of any of them, start taking a look at the rest of the team instead of putting it on one player. You people in Medicine Hat should find someone between the pipes to try and save a puck. The problem on this team is we can't win a game with 20 shots in a game. The sad thing is Busenius is the best defencmen on the team, and works his ass off. For you fans to put down a young kid and say these horrible things is beyond me. Maybe learn the game of hockey and see that the tigers have certain systems they follow to get the puck out.. and not to mention a 97 mph shot. Your right maybe the tigers do need a change... how about some better fans... TRADE TRADE TRADE

Theriau does not drop the gloves and stand up for his team mates. He does not make any hard hits and he is really not that tough of a Dman to play against. I like Ryckman A LOT better. As for his numbers, we need someone to play defence, not offence, we have enough Dmen doing that. I really think we need someone playing simple D - that man is Ryckman. And he will drop the mitts.

Anonymous said...

As a 16 year old Bunz played better then Dawson. Dawson lost a year by only playing 11 games last year. He was not half as athletic as Bunz. The problem was not that he needed to be pulled it, it was a problem of talent.

We pleased to read what Shawn said in the paper. I think the team needed to hear that. Shawn is clearly happen with the goaltending and sees the potential in this team. I think he is right that we have run into a number of tough calls and bounces but also that our guys lack confidence. I think having Lanigan here will help them get their confidence back and I hope we can see that change in the coming games. I think everyone here has been jumped on the small things and forgetting that this is a young team, it will take a bit of time, the goaltending was a problem but is now sorted and now we have to come up with and stick to playing a system that will work for the team as a whole. That was tough when there was not goaltending. Excited to see what the next fews games have in store, will be happy to watch the next game from the stands! Go tigers go!

Was just looking. Boston is +5 on the season with 10 points so far, nice work!! He is doing a great job out there! Keep it up! Go tigers go! Lets get a win against Kelowna!

Anonymous said...

Boston always has his head down glued to he ice. He's one big hit away from a major concussion. We need some talent on scoring lines. Not guys who stumble and fall so much like leir. Labelle and doty can fill that role. I agree a coaching change is needed. No one is buying what clouston is selling. Best forward is invisible. Where is Willie!

Tabbies problem is lose of focus....Oilking second goal was a result of a long pass while the whole Tiger team was back playing defense. Both Dmen were flat footed standing on thier own blueline...On the third goal Lanigan was more concerned about waving his bare hand looking for a penalty rather than watching the puck....Lanigan played great but every time yah lose focus the puck can end up in your own net. Its the little things that are costing victories...Lossing too many faceoffs and puck battles during crucial times. Goaltenders playing tall when they should be playing wide. Young dmen getting a bit antsy when other teams are on a hard forecheck....Shinkaruk is playing like he feels he needs to carry the team on his shoulders. He is trying too hard to do too much. Lanigan will help and solidify the goaltending situation. Young D currently logging too many minutes but can only help down the road. Lets just say that the problems they are having are a result of things happening between the ears rather then lack of skill.

Stix said...

Well stated Dengel2002.

Dengel2002 said...

Busenius is at best a number 3 or 4 dman. He is logging number 1 minutes and qb on the pp. When you put a player in an position that is not suited to him, things are going to happen. He is a quality number 3 or 4 whl dman. Not sure which 20 yo is let go when Theriau returns. There is a case for for each one to stay. Tough decision.
