Tigers Shutout Giants 4-0

 Pre-Game
The Giants sat out 20 year old overager Trevor Cheek. Be interesting to see if he is on his way to Edmonton.

Newly aquired Rob Trzonkowski suffered an injury in his third game with the Giants Sunday Night.
They were missing their captain Wes Vannieuwenhuizen out with a long injury.
The Giants were also playing with 3 callups in their roster.

They traded Kale Kessy to kamloops last week.
Taylor Vickerman was out with a one game suspensions.

Tigers Had Derek Ryckman, and Kyle Becker out with injuries. The Tigers will evaluate Ryckman tomorrow, and Becker will be out sometime with cough "the flu"

I thought the Giants played really hard tonight and showed a good commitment to their defense for the first half of the game. I thought the Tigers played well enough to win, but I thought their were a couple players who had "off nights"

New Guys
Got our first real looks at Hodder and McVeigh. Hodder looks like he can skate with the wind, reminds me of former tiger Jace Coyle in some ways.

McVeigh took a couple penalties and didn't make a great first impression.  But when your placed on the top line with Shinkaruk and Valk, for a new guy its hard to fit in because you don't want to mess up their chemistry....Give him some time and he will fit in nicely.
Game Thoughts
I thought Trevor Cox was playing better, he looked sharper and was more aggressive. Scored a goal on a nice screen shot.

I thought Tyler Lewington also had a really good game for himself on the blueline. Won a lot of small battles and played pretty aggressive. Miles Koules continued his streak of playing well and creating chances offensively, and Tiger sniper Jake Doty has made it 4 straight games with a goal, with 11 points in his last 11 games.

Gotta give props to the 4th line as they buried 2 goals. Broadhead got his second as a Tiger, and Blake Penner got his 1st whl regular season goal. Also gotta give props to Chad Labelle for another strong showing in his fight against Arvin Atwal.    Cam Lanigan played well picking up his 1st shutout as a Tiger.

Ty Stanton had an off night and Boston Leier has been in a bit of a slump since coming back after Christmas.

Dylan Bredo
The coaches mentioned after the game that they are considering keeping him back their full time as he is turning some heads with his play. He made one booboo tonight but he does an awesome job at battling for loose pucks, and getting a quick pass up to the forwards.

Tomorrow I will be away from the computer for most of the day. So I won't be on top of breaking news if a trade happens.

I hope they keep Bredo on defence. I have noticed him more playing on defence then on forward. He has been incredible! And I am so happy that Doty is playing so well under the Tigers system!
It is funny as I thought the Tigers would struggle in the first half of the season because of inexperience and had the ability to challenge for a playoff position in the second half. And if the last 5 games are any indication, I think they will do it!
As for those calling for Cloustons head, back off. The guy has done an unreal job with this team. They are so young! It has been a struggle, I am sure, to get the guys to buy into the system, and to get guys up to speed on what Tiger Hockey is. But he is doing it, and I think he is doing one hell of a job. His trades have improved the team a lot, the guys seem to play hard for him and the team have come leaps and bounds. Clouston is a keeper!
I also want to mention, in the last 4 games, the effort by each and every Tiger seems to be elevated. They are winning small battles because of 2nd and 3rd efforts, the 3rd and 4th liners are generating that same energy and are now contributing in scoring. This team is coming along!
Great job Cloutson and the coaching team! And Go Tigers Go!!!!

Awesome effort, dominated the game, could have been 7-0. Love that all lines are getting lots of ice time! Will pay off!

Keep Bredo on defence, overagers should be Bredo, Valk and Doty next year!

After watching the last 4 games are people still wanting to fire the coach/GM? I can't wait as I know they will fade out of this blog shortly.

I think Boston's days are number curious though if Ryckman is out for more than 4 weeks or what could be a nagging injury do we look at Miller from Brandon? He's a more physical version of him and the way Ryckman has looked recently I can't see it as anything but an upgrade

Great decision to have Bredo take a D spot and centre on the first pk unit. He has the offensive flair to make rushes from his own end. Has a nice crisp first pass and shows the willingness to pihch in and force a turnover. Uses his stick well to poke pucks off opositions sticks. Bredo has found his niche with the Tigers.
Hodder looks good . Calm with the puck and also has a nice clean first pass.
Logan Mcv looks like a keeper. He will take a bit to fit in on the top line but he has the O skills to do thatl. Hope his shoulder ills are a thing of the past. Coachs show trust in him by having him take a few key defensive zone face offs.
Everyone is gettihg quality minutes, can only bode well come playoff time.
Im still not sold on Koules, gets too fancy at times in his own zone. He'd be better off to make sure to get puck out of dzone. His +/- speaks about his tendancy to give up the puck. He best suited to being hard on the forecheck and creating O that way, rather than trying to create it from 150ft from the net.
Happy to see the team be harder on the forecheck, rather than peal back and let the other team setup.
Was a nice team win, everyone played thier role well.
Three games in three nights will tell more.

Id keep 6'4" 205# +4 Ryckman, rather than 6ft 177 -22 Miller. No brainer there. Give Ryckman lesser minutes and let him focus on a shutdown role rather than too many situations.

On a different note, has anyone been following Bunz in te ECHL? He is terrible!! His goals against is bad, save % is bad. It is too bad the Oilers have done this to him. He is a 5th round pick, not high. Most 5th rounders never see the NHL. So why rush him to low level pros?? He should be with the Tigers. He needed more time and experience. This ba year in the ECHL is digging a hole for him and he will never see the NHL. Too bad, liked him a lot! Feel bad this was done to him!

waaaaah! Fire the coach...he's totally ruining Doty! He turned him from a fighter into a guy who can score and still beat the bejesus out of anyone.

and now Bredo on defence? he's doing too good back there! fire the coach for finding a guy in house who may solve our d problems!

Clearly the coach must go. he's ruining these guys by making them better!

;)

Bunz numbers suggest he isn't having a good year. But playing in the echl as a 20 year old is far from being rushed.

I do like that the Tigers have been more aggresive on their forecheck, instead of everyone running back to center ice.

The Tigers did give up an extra odd man rush every once in a while, but they created more scoring chances, more shots, more puck possesion time and have more time in the offensive zone.

I think it creates more pressure and a speed intimdation factor to the opposition team.

Also the guys on offensive generate more speed so its easier to catch up to the opposition when they are flat footed trying to break out of their zone, rather than trying to stop players at full flight when themselves are flat footed at center ice.

Echl compares about equal to WHL from a skill and speed standpoint. The struggle Bunz is having might have more to do with it being a pro league. You have to fend for yourself. Cook, clean, laundry. Appears to me from what I hear is that it is not an age or skill dilemna but a maturity problem. No problem with on ice dedication. Away from rink distractions.

Good Call on the Trevor Cheek Trade.

Looks like Langhamer is a keeper.
Will their star euro pick be a back up next year too?

Anymore trades the tigers are doing any rumors yet one hour to go!?

Its been quieter than quiet. I've only heard saskatoon made a push for Shinkaruk, and their was some interest in Doty a month ago.

I'm sure we will get a few trades trickle out after the deadline as per usualy.

I heard Blades offered a 16 year old an 17 year old 2 top prospects and 3 picks for Hunter......I would of taken it

The only thing it looks like the Tigers did was sign prospect scott allan. Can't find anthing about him though.

On the Bunz thing, if he was a player, then I could see pulling him up to the ECHL. But as a low draft pick and a goaltender - who they say always develop slower, I agree, why pull him up? And I agree, he was a far shot to make the NHL anyways, but why play with his confidence this way? Let him mature another year, play a ton of games and have real success before burying him in the minors. Bad choice on the Oilers part. My guess Bunz will follow Keetley's path. Too bad, was a great kid!

A tall lanky 16 yr old defenseman from colorado 6'5 180 lbs..playing with the banf bears....same league the Cubs play in.

I really like what Doty has turned into. Good sight on the part of the GM/coaches to see this potential and then provide a way for it to flourish.
Funny how people were calling for Clouston to be fired. All good things take time, first half of the season was rough but we still went into Christmas break in 8th. Now I think we see the potential for a better team. I think we will sneak into playoffs, that has got to been seen as a HUGE success with this young team!

I like 6'5" for a Dman. Interesting, hopefully a future player.

Jesus that's a big 16 year old

Where do you get the information from that the Tigers signed Scott Allan?

Saskatoon gets Collin Valcourt from Spokane for a 1st round pick in 15 and a 5th rounder in 13

Blades also got Michael Ferland from Wheaties for 1st rd in 13

Brandon sends Alessio Bertaggia to Spokane for third and fifth round draft choice, the rights to 16-year old Rhett Gardner of the Moose Jaw AAA Midget Chiefs and Czech right-winger Marek Kalus.

Has their 1st pick last year Ty Schultz ever signed with the Tigers? Do you know.

Anonymous said...

I had understood he did in the summer. Is this wrong?

Anonymous said...

I understood that when he left camp in September he had still not signed so I don't know if he has signed since that time.

Anonymous said...

I saw him in rookie/main camp. Tall yes.fast and agile??? shot? No. But hey he is 6'5". Got one in the nose and dropped by 15 yr old. 26 games last season in academy hockey, zero points. Western Canadian midgets better than American Academy players. However thats just my opinion.
