How many defencemen and forwards do we usually go with?

I have really liked Doty this year so far. Loved him at the end of last. But really like Boston, that is going to be a terrible choice. Bredo is one of our best players but barely puts up points, might they trade him? Seems like there is not category for preventing points against you, otherwise he would be huge in that area. Hard to believe we would trade a guy who has NHL interest to keep a guy who has not caught the eye of any pro team.

I hope Boston or Doty stick in the AHL as I don't want to play either of them. Would hate to seem them in another jersey. I think Valk will be back, he is too small to play AHL right now. Another year in junior would be good for him.

Still 12 d men on the roster although Quennville can't stay so actually 11 guys for maybe 8 spots. Have to think Stanton, Lewington, Jensen and Becker are locks as well as Bredo as an overager. Hodder is most likely on the outside looking in and will most likely be moved or released. That leaves 3 spots for 5 guys. Going to be a tough call but i think Allen, Staples and Hobbs will be the other three. Comments?

It seems like we have a lot of talent that won't make the team, do you see trades occurring soon?

Anonymous said...

Hobbs and Allen are my picks for the new guys. Staples came a long way last year and I agree that he will keep his spot.
It is hard to evaluate Schultz when he has not played last year because of injury and this year again. But all these injuries seems like a sign to me.

Typically they have gone with 7 D-Men, 12 forwards and 2 goalies for 21 players..

However last year they had 24/25....It will depend on the players but they could be near the max again. They could easily go with 8 Dmen with the talent they have.

Estimated Cuts
Forward Cuts:2-3
Defense Cuts:4-5
Goalies Cuts:1

I have't seen enough to make a good prediction on who stays/goes. They could easily keep 8 guys on Defence...they would have to if they kept Allan, Schultz, and staples....see if the young guys can outperform a guy like staples.

Based on last year, and young guns. Hodder,Doty, Labelle, Staples, and any 17/18 that may get cut could be trade bait material. Staples did look quite improved from last year in exhibition.

You think we could see Labelle on his way out?

Anonymous said...

I think keeping Schultz over Hobbs would be a big mistake. I have seen them both play over this season. There is no comparison who is the better player at this point. I hope just because you are a first rounder does not mean you get the gift of playing. Everyone should earn their spot.

Anonymous said...

I have no idea how they are going to cut the roster down that much. Literally sending guys who should be playing in the WHL home. Guess trades are options, but who do you trade??

TigerTurf said...

With Labelle not necessarily, just could potentially be a guy who falls behind on the depth charts. Him and Broadhead play similar roles....although Labelle looked really good against the Broncos yesterday, whereas Broadhead didn't
-----
On D
Bredo, Jensen, Lewington, Becker, Stanton are likely assured spots.

Staples is an incumbent, and Schultz a 1st round pick, where the Tigers have historically given them a roster spot at 16.

That is pretty much a full group. Essentially Have Allan, Hobbs, and Mortlock battling for an 8th spot. or possibly the 7th/8th spot from Staples.

After 2 viewings I give Allan the edge...It's a logjam back there.

Tigers at the young guns tournament
Jensen. Played well in both games. Skating is good. Good gap control. Moving the puck well. Needs to solid up a bit, but that will come
Stanton: one game: played as 6 dman good passing. Adequate, but needs to be a little quicker. Nothing glaring, a couple of years of no injuries is what he needs
Shinkarak: not having the success he expected frustrated at times tonight. Definitely coming back to the Hat.
Just as an extra: I'm glad kegan Kanzig is a Flame. Also Ferlsnd has got in shape this year and will be a force in Ahl.

Too much talent!

Anonymous said...

What are your thoughts on Owre and Butcher? Keep them? Or potentially going to be traded?

TigerTurf said...

Both have a lot of talent. I don't see either of them going.

Anonymous said...

Butcher is so talented. I think he will be getting a lot more points this year.
Have to admit, I find our situation tough with a lot of talent on the ice. I do wonder if there will be a trade of 2. Also, I think, so far, that Robidoux has proven he can play at this level. Williams had a rough first game but will need a good game tonight to prove he is still in the running.
We will be a good team this year. Just hope we are able to have good chemistry and dressing room atmosphere.

Watching the game now and 2 comments, Williams is not ready for WHL and I had thought Allen was what we needed on defence but he is not composed with the puck. I think they should go with Schultz (assuming he is a lock because 1st round) and Hobbs (nice passer, composed). Allen has made a number of unimpressive plays.
Sure nice to be watching some tiger hockey! Just odd sitting in the Kinplex!

Williams is pretty shaky in net. Wonder if it is nerves as from watching practices he is better then this. Hope he pulls it together!
Bad reception in the Kinplex and lacking the atmosphere of the Arena, can't wait to get back into the old barn.

We get one game in the pre-season and now it is cut to one period?!?! Are you kidding me? The fog was not that bad! Outraged right now!

TigerTurf said...

Tonights Game was cancelled. They cited players safety as the reason.

The glass was all fogged up. For players wearing visors I imagine they were getting fogged up as well.

Allan looked really nervous on the ice....but those giveaways could be attributed to the fog/poor ice, don't judge him off that one period performance

Hobbs looked good tonight.

Anonymous said...

Fog or not, you don't pass infront of the net. He knew where he was. Bad play.
Pretty disappointed about the game. Guess the nay-sayers can finally quiet down with the argument that we don't need a new rink. No where to play in the Hat!
Sad we only got 1 period of pre-season! Feel bad for Swift making the trip for that!

Anonymous said...

1 period is just a tease. Reschedule??

Anonymous said...

Feel bad for Williams bet he was hoping to change things in the second and third. I hope he gets another shot to redeem himself!

Anonymous said...

Crappy rinks is a Med Hat problem. Can't wait for a new arena!

Anonymous said...

How do two defensive misques make Williams shaky in net? He made three great saves on the PK. Can't judge a kid on one period. Hope he gets another shot.

Anonymous said...

Hope there were no releases based on 1 period of play! Any word if there were (other then maybe the 15 year olds)

Anonymous said...

Last year we did not keep our import and sent him home. Any idea of Markus will be staying with the team or not? He seems like a good player but we also have a lot of home grown talent coming up the pipe.... thoughts?

Anonymous said...

thank you to the tigers for the sseason ticket holder pre season shirts I received when I picked up my tickets!

Anonymous said...

I thought Williams looked nervous and shaky compared to his other outings. A little lost in his crease at times. Yep, there were the bad turn overs but this opinion is unrelated to those. Would have liked to see him in the second and third as towards the end of the first he was settling in.

Anonymous said...

Now we have to wait for regular season, seems so far away!
Go tigers go! I like what I see so far!

TigerTurf said...

I guess the reason the game started near 8:00 instead of 7:30 was because of broken glass in the warmups.

Also the fans sang O'Canada in the stands.

So it was quite the experience

TigerTurf said...

15 Year Old David Queneville tweeted after the game.

"Good luck to all the @tigershockey guys this year. Light it up. Great time at camp this year, can't wait to be back next year !"

Sounds like the Tigers sent him back to Edmonton.

I really like the potential of this team. I think Robidoux is the better tendy, he has looked real solid in net and I have to admit I no longer really worry about our goaltending situation. Sure looking forward to the season.

Anonymous said...

Really impressed with the showing Valk and Doty are putting up at the tournament. I have not heard anything about how Lanigan is playing but hoping the best for him!

Anonymous said...

I am hoping that Labelle and Butcher have breakout seasons. They look real good so far in camp. Both have offensive talent.

Anonymous said...

Was it that foggy last night in the Kinplex? The replays look fine, a bit misty but fine.

TigerTurf said...

Jacob Doty has made Main Camp with St. Louis.
