Playoff Chances Slipping Away

Losing Skid & Playoff Chances
Tigers have only managed 2 wins in their past 8 games and that has put them in a tough spot to make the playoffs.

Regina & Edmonton Estimation
If we estimate Edmonton and Regina playing .500 hockey the rest of the way. They would both end up with 71 points each. I think this is a very fair estimate.  Their current records are .490. (Edmonton playing strong, Regina with a lot of Home Games.)

Regina has been slipping lately, but edmonton has been playing pretty strong. Realistically Regina is tracking more towards the 67-68 point range.

Tigers Situation
The Tigers sit at 44 points currently. The First Tiebreaker is wins except the last playoff spot is a tiebreaker 1 game take all so we will add a point as insurance.

Math
 72-44 = 28 points Needed
20 games left = 28/40 = .700 Winning Percentage or
14 wins in next 20 games ( Assuming REG,EDM win at .500)

If Edmonton or Regina falters at a .350 rate.
65-44=  21/40
10.5 wins in next 20 games

Friday Night in Regina
This is a must-win game for the Tigers.  A loss will put them on the brink of not returning. A loss means they need 30 points in 19 games or a .789 Winning percentage providing regina or Edmonton stays at a .500 rate.

Conclusion
The Tigers are entering territory of relying on another team to falter to make the playoffs which is dangerous territory.  If Regina or Edmonton doesn't falter the Tigers need to win @ a .700 rate. which is essentially pulling a rabbit out of the net at this point in the season.

The Tigers have made the playoffs for 13 consecutive years. Failing to make it out of the first round only once.

Think the remnants of the flu bug and 4 in 5 nights had a lot to do with the outcome last night. That and their inability to get the puck through the neutral zone. Had no speed entering the zone and when they did were trying to be to fancy. Swifty goalie played well but he gave up rebounds all night and the Tigers unwillingness to shoot and get pucks to the net cost them. Nick Schneider played well again and had to fight through bodies all night to make saves. And once again the guy I've been talking about being a defensive liability got stripped of the puck that led to the game winner.

Who's hosting the coaching staff going away party?

Shane T said...

You didn't even touch on Swift Current, who is 3 points behind us with 2 less games. We could pull off a miracle and still lose. We also have 3 games against them.

TigerTurf said...

I would agree Quenneville needs to improve upon his agility/positioning/more active stick as he is getting blown by on the outside too many times.
-------

Swift does play regina 4 more times as well. Tigers aren't chasing swift in the standings though, although they maybe by the end. Swift's 6/7 streak has been quite impressive with the competition they have faced and despite being heavily outshot in most of those games. I wasn't very impressed with their play and it seems unlikely they can sustain that pace.

Their is still some time left though so if one team goes on a 5-6 game winning streak that can change things quite a bit with so few games are remaining.

Anonymous said...

Most of the team was sick. That in itself may have cost the tigers a playoff series. Too bad. But I am still holding out hope!

TigerTurf said...

Shaw, Kirichenko, Fischer not dressed for tonight according to Regina's Media guy. Schneider to start.

Sanford has an A for the pats.

Anonymous said...

Its unfortunate the streak will be broken. Clouston should step down from the GM role he made a mess of the team the last 2 season with a failed playoff push and this shitty season in a new rink. They still dont even have a lease yet wtf

Anonymous said...

how does clouston still have a job? 4 players in 4 years demanding trades. they had a great team last year and for the first time in 6 years went for it acquiring players and lost in round2. this season was a gongshow. only a penny pincher would keep him hired.

Anonymous said...

I saw something on twitter that struck a chord. The commentator from access 7 tv who broadcasted tonight's game in Regina posted a roster sheet. Regina's organization has double the coaching/support staff as the Tigers. Are we really that much of a bare bones operation compared to the other clubs??

Anonymous said...

I seriously question what Junior hockey will be like in Medicine Hat in the next 5-10 years. As a Tigers fan I hope that the Masors sell the teams and let owners come in who put money back into the orgization/fans.

Anonymous said...

All valid comments once again on the Coach/GM and the Owners. They are a bunch of Osteriches with their heads in the sand. What a disgrace to the crest on our jersey. No lease, no dressing room, no gym, no budget and no vision.

Anonymous said...

Hopefully they will let Clouston go. Poor coaching. Painful to watch.

TigerTurf said...

That .700 win rate, has turned into an .805 win rate needed to make the playoffs. Essentially they are done, mathematically will take a couple weeks to officially be eliminated.

At this point their better off letting swift overtake them so they have a shot at the #1 pick in the lottery. Swift has tied them in the standings with a victory tonight.

Extremely disapointing season.

Has anyone noticed the big Fail of the VIP seats? The bottom Half of them are in poor sightlines and nobody has ever sat in them

sammy12 said...

Whose idea was it to have VIP seats to begin with? Season ticket holders who had tickets there for years were moved to lesser seats if they didn't want to pony up the extra money. Next point, can't understand the owners not following through on any of the points raised by anonymous at 11:32 as they should have been done by now. Don't imagine the league would step in and investigate but it might be a good idea. Imagine the honeymoon effect of new arena will see a substantial drop off in season ticket holders next year as many people are not very happy with having to come to games so early to get a parking spot and then unless you leave 5 mins early the traffic jam to get out is really frustrating. Strange somebody would build an arena on the bald prairie and not build an adequate parking lot. Know myself if no more parking by time to buy season tickets next year I'll just buy tickets to games I want to watch and save a bundle and say goodbye to being a 20 year season ticket holder.

Anonymous said...

Been to several WHL arenas and most of them have VIP/Club sections. Very common. The Canalta is no different.

longtimefan said...

Disappointing season, yes. Unexpected, no. They were returning two defenceman from last year, one of which spent the last part of the season in the stands watching. They had no young guys ready to step in this year and tried to piece meal a defence together. Well, we've all seen how that worked out. Scotty Bowman couldn't have gotten this team to the playoffs. And no they haven't underachieved, they're where they should be in the standings and probably won't be much better next year with what will be a very young defensive group. The only bright spot is they have a lot of picks in the next two drafts which if used properly should restock the cupboards.

sammy12 said...

anonymous at 8:09 AM I know the cities that have NHL sites may practice something like that for VIP seats where arenas are much bigger but how many places with under 60,000 population do. Remember a lot of Tigers season tickets fans are seniors with not a lot of extra money. We probably have highest rate of senior season ticket holders in league. Next year couple that with many people suffering consequences of low oil prices and I think VIP tickets will see a further high vacancy rate of the best seating rink has. Kinda goofy planning it seems to me to have best seating in arena not available to average loyal fan because there are not enough people willing/able to cough up the big bucks and so they seats sit empty and as I said worse next year unless there are changes.

CatFan said...

We also have a very good goaltender who is getting invaluable experience facing 30-45 shots every game!

Shane T said...

A couple more games and we could be chasing Saskatoon as well! At least Kootenay probably won't pass us.

Anonymous said...

I really hope Clouston is fired as GM at the very least and that there is a overhaul of the coaching. We need to see more experience behind the bench and guys who will challenge each other. None of the assistants will challenge Clouston and that is just not going to work. Clouston needs to go but I think the assistants do as well. Tigers need a fresh staff to get this back on track. I hope they do it before the draft.

clean sweep from owners down new start great for the team, fans hopefully revenue...new fans!!!

Anonymous said...

We have all had enough of the masers and the clouston age. time for some new blood to bring the tigers back to life. No third jerseys no intermission ice show, no enthusiasm from ownership or thankfulness to the fans. Dave anjelic was a bit tongue tied on shaw when they asked him about signing an agreement....Better off if they just leave it to a new owner who actually gives a hoot.

Anonymous said...

We be better off in the bottom 3 and get the top rated player haven't had a first overall since bowmeester.

Anonymous said...

Gotta agree with most posters... Second year season ticket holders - actually bought 4 so we could treat friends/family - but with lousy hockey this year, we sit with extra elbow room on lots of nights. Next year, will buy two (at most) - but may just buy walk-ups for interesting games. The parking lot is a travesty - I know it was built to (eventually) charge for parking (i.e. limited entrances) but they could have easily had extra exits with iron gates to open up mid-way through the third period. It is so aggravating to get stuck on the NE side - two games ago, didn't move for 28 minutes. And watching one car every 5 seconds go into the city from the Methanex direction is even more maddening. Part is due to the poor drivers, I'm sure, but just as much due to the parking guys who let the entire North side lot empty before the larger lots below. What about letting 10 go, in turns, from each feeder road? And the empty lot "saved" for invisible vehicles carrying non-existent VIP season ticket holders - what a joke. Last part of the rant - the Tigers have some good young talent, but the coaching has to be abysmal... Teams lower in the standings come in and have crisp passes and stand up the Tigs at the blue line through whole games! That's what good coaching creates. Not a long time fan (like many posters) but a Medicine Hatter for better part of 50 years... We'd almost be better off picking up the Ice when they go under and building a new team at the Arena than the 2015/6 debacle. Oh well, we'll be saving a few $$$ come April - no playoff tickets to buy! Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

Anonymous said...

The season is already dead to me. Looking forward to the draft. Clouston is useless. I wish the Masers would pay attention to things like this blog and listen to the fans. We are all pissed off and want a good hockey team back.

longtimefan said...

Some of the comments posted here make it seems like this team has been bad for years. Facts are 13 straight years in the playoffs is almost unheard of in Junior hockey. It's a business that when you're drafting low every year this is going to happen eventually. Don't have to look any further than west down the highway in Kootenay where they are going through the same issues. I'm not saying this team doesn't have it's internal problems because it does, but they've had a pretty good run and it's time to retool.

As I've said before I place a lot of the blame on the roster with former Director of Player Personnel Brad MacEwan. He was responsible for running the draft because our gm now and previously had the dual role of coach/gm and very little time to get out and see the upcoming talent. I'm confident that Darren Kruger will change the look of the players list but it's going to take some time.

Anonymous said...

Long time fan Are you a clouston fan? How about commentater Barry prins are you a fan of his? I don't hink couston has what it takes...all other good coaches move up?????

CatFan said...

I agree with longtimefan. It is only one year, suck it up people! On the other hand I am disgusted with the owners who didn't seem to think it important for the team to feel at home in the new arena with it's own dressing room and the banners! Also not a very good job of assigning season ticket seats and when you questioned them they refuse to call or e-mail back. The "store" is also a joke. They really should have brought in more and different merchandise for the first year in a new home. Terrible marketing period!!

longtimefan said...

Actually anon 10:46 I'm not a big Clouston fan nor a Prins fan but I am a realist. It's going to happen eventually in Junior hockey to every team, (see Kootenay). If you put the owners hat on and strictly look at Cloustons record as a head coach here he doesn't get fired, 213 wins and 122 losses is a pretty good record. He has also been an assistant and associate coach for all 13 years the team has been in the playoffs as well. There may be extenuating circumstances playing out (players wanting out) that could get him fired but in my opinion you probably won't see that happen.

Perhaps 10:46 you could provide some stats other than the blanket statement, "all other good coaches move up".

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with catfans post terrible marketing and seat placement, they do not listen to fans. Who are these owners anyway I looked on the Tigers site under staff and no pictures of the owners they must be proud aaah not...Do they think new pennants come in the new arena package Looooooosers.

TigerTurf said...

Let's go back to when Willie was here. Their was a new rule change where hockey took out the red line for 2 line passes, and hooking/tripping infractions were called very frequently. That substantially opened the speed of the game

Willie was one of Hockey's Pioneer's in acquiring quick smaller players to grab a big advantage off of this.

The game changes over time. We can just look at the NHL and points scored to see the game has adapted and again growing more defensively. Heavyweight enforcers have disappeared and 3rd/4th lines are now full of young kids, instead of aging veterans)

Back to the WHL: Those quick and small players the Tigers had a very good grasp into that talent pool. That talent pool is much more competitive for players with the rules changes in 04-05.

Nowadays 12 yr old kids are training in the off-season, their schedules are as rigid as a junior hockey players schedule. The gap in speed between smaller and bigger is evaporating due to training as well as adaptability to the new rules.
-----

The Tigers and CLouston have continued to follow "their formula" of speed and mobility and it is much easier found in the undersized players.

I think It's why certain defenceman don't make this team, why Hobbs was behind on the depth charts, and schultz overtook him ( at the time schultz was faster)

It's why a guy like Rassal plays 3rd line minutes, and why Shaw/Gerlach get top 6 minutes.
It's why their isn't size up front.

Clouston is also very quick to make roster moves. He always has his roster set before the season starts. Willie would usually still have some guys, and those that don't work out would recoup a 5th or 6th round pick. 10-12 games into the season.

One area I give clouston credit is that he gets great value from his trades, albeit sometimes those trades are pointed in the wrong direction.

--------------

I feel the formula is becoming less effective because the game has had time to adapt. I feel that the more the Tigers stay staus quo the harder it will be for them to stay an above average team.

Anonymous said...

Terrible game tonight. I am will not be renewing season tickets until Clouston is gone. Ultimately he is responsible for the team. We should be better as we have lost great players wanting to leave. I love the Tigers, but it is getting hard to watch.

Anonymous said...

Sick and tired of watching this crap. I agree, we are this bad because of Clouston and his terrible GM/coaching choices/methods. He is not liked by the team, he hired useless assistants and he is not keeping up with the changing ways of the game. Time to take out the trash

Anonymous said...

The problem not only lies with Clouston but the cheap ownership who are scrimping out at every turn. Still no agreement with SMG still no permanent dressing room. Still a bare minimum amount of players, always needing call ups! The inexperienced assistant coaches. Where do I stop. I too see no need in future to be a season ticket holder. I will pick and choose when I want to go to games in future. Hurt the Miser Masers where it hurts, in there wallets.

longtimefan said...

Whether you like Clouston or not last nights abysmal effort is on the players. Wonder how Nick Schneider feels about being hung out to dry by his team mates.

CatFan said...

Longtimefan: Nick should be used to it by now as it happens almost every game. I thought he just looked tired last night. It must get to him at some point when he has to face so many shots and breakaways every night. The upside is he will become a better goalie for it, and think of how good he would be with some kind of defence?

It's easy to make excuses, but the bottom line is when every aspect of the organization is about $ then eventually how do we compete. Other organizations operate much different.. Boys train all summer to be in top condition and don't even have a gym to keep up three fitness. So many issues to be addressed. Too many excuses!!

where is the tigers exercise equipment if its not at the Canalta Center then?

8 Game Losing streak..

Unfortunately saskatoon also lost so the Tigers remain 19/22.
Current Lottery Standings
Kootenay - Six balls
Saskatoon - Five balls
Tigers - Four balls
Swift Current - Three balls
Vancouver - Two balls
TriCity - One ball
-----------------------
Going to do the math here. If the Tigers Remain and finish 20/22
1st pick = 19% Chance
2nd pick = 0% Chance
3rd Pick = 57% chance
4th pick = 23.8% Chance
------------

IF saskatoon OVertakes the Tigers and the Tigers finish 21/22
1st pick = 23.8%
2nd pick = 42.9%
3rd Pick = 33.3

Complete Gong Show! So long to my season tickets. I cannot support this organization anymore.

Anonymous said...

Me too. My parents who have had tickets since 1980 are not renewing until the coach is fired and I am in the same boat. Boy, the Tigers organisation managed to destroy this rather quickly. I miss the Willie Desjarden days. The Clouston reign is killing this team. The Masers need to wake up.

Anonymous said...

You would have thought they would have built for this year and tried to fill the empty second tier atta boy marketing staff....And No kudos to the smg canalta center staff for not fixing the main light post to the north east parking lucky it hasn't been cold this year its dark there someone could easily get ran over!!!

Anonymous said...

Really??? The Tigers might not make the playoffs for the first time in 14 frikkin years and you are going to just say screw them I am done? Nice support you have for these kids. Do you really expect them to advance every single year??? Pretty sure 13 years in a row is rare in the WHL.

Anonymous said...

Really!!!! Who says that what are ya 2, The masers need to wake up and fill the rink even if it is giving tickets away to the boy scouts or charity and Clouston do you think he is washed up??? Aaaaah I do ya we got some draft picks but every other year we have been able to ice a contender, bottom line is________ new coach, owners and the team will evolve and be FINE.

longtimefan said...

I would agree anon 12:51. People bailing after such a long run weren't great fans to start with.

Hunt is now leading the league in scoring. I remember TigerTurf saying the Tigers should have kept him, stanton, and sanford.

I am all in to supporting the hard work of the players...but the bottom line is if the Norm is we hit the playoffs for 14 frikkin years??? and all the sudden we don't hit, OBVIOUSLY someone is not doing there job to CAPACITY and CHANGES need to be made this is where the End of the CLOUSTON ERA needs to be addressed. People get too complacent and need to move on!!!

Anonymous said...

I expect management to do something about kids leaving. That is support. The people bailing on tickets are not the ones bailing on the team, the Masers are bailing on the team by not giving them a decent coach, decent management, decent assistant coaches and a decent atmosphere to play in.

Anonymous said...

Weren't great fans to start with? How can you blame passionate fans who not only put their time and money into the Tigers but genuinely will be around after players swap jerseys and coaches move out. I'm in the same boat it is more painful to go to those games and watch these team knowing what it use to be and with this economy you can't just expect people to shell out money for crappy quality of hockey. Let's have some logic and not just call fans out for not wanting to put up with garbage hockey and pathetic efforts night in and out and by them my going to game they hurt the owners the most.

Anonymous said...

I give Clouston an 'F-" He couldn't get a good defense together this year gave a 4th rd pick for a very raw-Heid, lost out on a very good prospect in Red deers Spacek, brought 2 RAW oversized Euros over. Had no trust that Schneider was going to be great, still no hope for Nick after losing Lotz. We have been shorthanded for how many seasons now, but we have many draft picks coming...Hopefully for someone who has the respect of the team and is motivated. Time for a new coach. definitely time for a new GM.

Anonymous said...

I agree. Clouston needs to be removed from the GM position at the very least. And there needs to be real assistant coaches, not just old players who do whatever Clouston tells them. I would hope CLouston is no longer coach but I am guessing this wont happen before next season.

Anonymous said...

Everything about this year has slid. Have you noticed the website is not as good, no polls, no interviews with the players, no Clouston post game comments on the replays like Willie use to do and no twitter following the action any more. IT is like the management gave up on the kids already as well.

Anonymous said...

I have been following the opposition twitter feeds for all away games. What happened to our tweeter?

longtimefan said...

My comment about the fans is based on some of the posts making it sound like we are in year four or five of watching a bad hockey club. Fact is this is the first year in the last 14 that it's been this way and as I've stated before this was going to happen eventually as it does with every Junior hockey franchise in operation. I would agree that there is an issue with the teams ownership but in spite of that the organization has been able to ice competitive teams for an extended period of time. No doubt they are in a dry spell right now and I expect it to continue into next year with lots of youth on the defensive end but for the first time since 2002 they are going to be picking in the top five of the draft. In 2002 they had the third pick overall, since then there has been two number ten picks while all other picks were number 13 and lower. Might be a couple years of pain here but with good drafting things will hopefully turn around.

Anonymous said...

I remember when the pioneer league was in town, they had many crowd pleasing events such as 100 ft banana split and san diego chicken mascot night, max papkin comedian which drew fans. also free ticket night if you wore your jersey. think about it if you fill seats parents will come and kids eat and want souveniers. But they might have to organize it.....just like the dressing room, banners and trophy cases they are waiting for someone to donate................................................!!!!!!!!

Why do the Tigers play Rassall on the third line, when he was on fire on the 1st line earlier in the year?

Anonymous said...

As the parent of a Tiger Alumni I cannot believe how disappointed I am of the so called fans of the Tigers. Booing a former captain!!!! How bush is that!!!. These are 16-20 year old young men trying to make their way in the world of hockey, not professional players making millions of dollars. Maybe you fans need to look in the mirror and ask yourselves why do these players ask out. Is it Clouston, or is it you fans who treat these young men as scapegoats and then say or do whatever they want towards these young men.

Why do you fans give Kruger a free pass? He quit on the team as well yet never gets criticized for that. He was the balance on the bench and in the dressing room for those kids. It's ok for him, because he was making a stand against the coach. A player does the same thing and he is treated like dirt.

CatFan said...

Anon 11:26: did Kruger quit as assistant coach or was he forced out? I never know what to believe on these boards, but problems with coaching does seem to be the ongoing issue. The problem is Clouston is both coach and g.m. so who decides he goes? I don't believe our owners care enough as long as they make money and there are fans in the stands. That however could change drastically in the next year when the novelty of a new building wears off. I don't agree with booing players who have left either. I may be disappointed in them but I would never boo them.

Anonymous said...

To commenter at 11:26 if you watched Sanford coast and slam his stick also make absurd faces when things didn't go his way, Float, not work hard and poke and cry to the refs you would know why fans give him a little extra boo ribbing. He would start fights mouthing other players off then cower away. As for Connor Hobbs he is a phenom I don't blame him for leaving Clouston put Becker and then Quenville ahead of him on the powerplay and gave Hobbs 3rd line time that was wrong. I totally enjoy watching him he is one of my favorite players to watch he always comes to play when he is in MH well worth the price of admission he would have made our team what they needed to be!!

Anonymous 1:05 you were probably the guy on here saying how great Cole was when he was scoring 50 goals last year. Now because he's not with the Tigers you have all kinds of disparaging remarks. Maybe walk a mile in these kid's shoes before making negative comments and booing a 20 year kid.

And yes I booed Sanford when he did shootout a littler louder than normal lmao!!! everyone boos in shootout isn't that the norm???

Anonymous said...

Let me get this straight. The players were doing what the coaches asked and that's the players fault. Have you actually ever put a pair of skates on and competed in the best junior league in the world let alone score 50 goals in it. You make zero sense but then again what should I expect from an arm chair coach/gm who has never put himself out there.Oh Yeah good luck winning, with the group that's still there. It is going to be a long time before this team is competitive again so likely won't hear from the fair weather fans such as you.

Anonymous said...

Anon 1:05, shrooms no longer bengals Sanford & Cox haters... You can't win championships with Cox & Sanford? As a Tigers fan of Cox & Sanford regardless of which jersey they currently wear. Cox 314 GP 93 G 201 A 294 PTS... Sanford 248 GP 117 G 121 A 234 PTS... Let me do their combined math totals for you. Sanford/Cox 562 GP 532 PTS. Its very evident you've never played the game. You are a poor example of a fan of any sport let alone a living human being that has nothing in his life but a keyboard to hide behind defaming players, coaches & GM.

Anonymous said...

Tiger Turf host... How about another updated round of point calculations for the fans who aren't as good at math? I know they are in miracle-land, in terms of getting to eighth, but your last blog was great.

As for the controversy since last game - I may be called a fairweather fan, but I hoped that Sanford would score. These are kids - some humble, some big-headed, but for their so-called 'pay' and the sacrifice of their high school years, I stopped razzing them a while ago. The refs last game, though, were worthy of having specs pitched on the ice. Pretty spotty officiating (but they, true to form, evened it up at the end of the 3rd, in time honored fashion of all refs who blow calls earlier in the game).

As for the Tigs, with Sanford and Hunt in the line-up this year, this 70+ comment blog wouldn't be existing... The kids have given up on the coaches - not a wise move on the whole, but what else can they do in an environment like the Tigers have created. Last thought - it is maddening when Tigs are caught offside and they don't do a four stride wind-sprint to get past the blue line (or they drag their rears to the bench - creating 'too many men' situations). The coaches must have given up too - as no one is ever benched on the team. On the other hand, with the exception of Butcher and a couple of more, they'd be benching most the team on most nights. But that's the team the coaches (Clouston) have built...

For all the rabid 20 year seasonholders that shame comments here - you can still be a fan and see what is dragging the team down...

Very well written Anon @ 9:46

I also hoped Sanford would score, and didn't like that he was booed. I'm fine with it in the shootout but he was a 4 year Tigers, and should have been put on the market due to the Tigers position in the standings. Sanford shouldn't have had to come out and demand a trade.
