Kruger Headed to the Flames
Wow, The Tigers lost a big piece of their Head Office today. Senior Director of Player Development Darren Kruger, has joined the Calgary Flames as an NHL scout with a focus on the Eastern Conference.

Congrats to Darren Kruger. He's had a profound effect on the Tigers success the last 12 years. He will be greatly missed.

Training Camp
I've had a few people ask about training camp. While nothing has been officially announced as of yet, typically they have opened camp up next Friday (Aug 25th). They usually announce something in the early stages of next week. If they do announce something I will edit this section.

Tigers Off-season.
Their has been some OA movement this off-season as expected so lets go through a quick recap.

May 22nd
Tigers Traded: Matt Bradley, 2nd round (2018), 3rd round( 2018 conditional), 5th round(2019), for Regina's Jordan Hollett(goaltender, 5th round NHL draft pick).

May 24th
Tigers traded Nick Schneider to the Calgary Hitmen for a 4th round 2019 conditional pick.

June 28th
Selected Mich Kohler 19 - F Committed to come over
Selected Linus Nassen 19 D - Status unknown

August 1st
Tigers traded Jordan Henderson to Kootenay for a 6th round 2019 conditional pick

Current Overage Crop

Ty Schultz ***
Zach Fisher ***
Mark Rassell ***
Brad Forrest *
Kristians Rubins **
Michael Bullion **

Ideal Situation
To maximize the potential for their lineup next season I feel the optimum route would be
Zach Fischer
Mark Rassell
Ty Schultz

If you're asking,  Hey, where is Kristian Rubins?....... Well in this scenario Linus Nassen one of their Import picks would replace him in the lineup and it would let the Tigers keep an extra veteran defenceman...essentially keeping 2 vets instead of 1. This up coming season they may have another very good year so it would make sense to keep the extra veterans.

However....

Their are 3 events that need to happen for that to take place
#1 Zach Fischer comes back from the Flames Training Camp
#2 Recently Acquired Jordan Hollett can prove to be a #1 starter
#3 Linus Nassen ( Import defenceman 3rd round 2016 NHL draft pick) reports to the Tigers so they free up an overage spot over Rubins

IF any of those scenarios don't happen it changes the whole ballgame.

Now official Kruger is off to the Flames.

Clayton Kirichenko + Steven Owre are expected to be announced as members of the Alberta Golden Bears for the upcoming season soon.

Nice to see guys heading to university rather then floundering around the minors for years and ended up late 20s with no education. Smart move on their part, they are both hard working guys and will certainly see success in hockey as well as professional life. All the best to them.

Anonymous said...

Evan Sarthou (97) has retired from hockey. That leaves Beck Warm (<600 career minutes) as Tri-City's only goalie. They don't have another one signed. Michael Bullion trade coming in the next few days/weeks perhaps???

Anonymous said...

ex-Oil King Patrick Dea in camp. Guess that answers your earlier question about how they would replace Sarthou in net. https://t.co/iuWPvxOW9b

Anonymous said...

Garin Bjorklund signed.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like Kristians Rubins is coming to camp, Linus Nassen isn't though. The 20 yr old situation could be Rubins, Fischer (if he doesn't turn pro), and Rassell?

Anonymous said...

So pretty much every team in the dub releases a full schedule of their teams training camp so the public can attend. But for some reason all the Tigers release is the time of the black and white game. Why can't they just release a schedule for everything just like every other team.

TigerTurf said...

Sounds like the rest of camp isn't public, which is unfortunate.

I know their are issues with paying staff to supervise for insurance purposes, but I feel it is ridiculous to not let a couple hundred fans watch up-coming players.

Anonymous said...

Things like this wouldn't make me mad if none of the other teams did it but when you go to all the other teams websites and see their schedules it definitely is frustrating.

Anonymous said...

Tigers not opening camp up is a joke. Whl should step in and settle this issue once and for all. Closed to fans the first year....open to fans lst year and closed again this year.Tigers ownership needs to grow up. I checked out WHL website today and all the other teams are having open training camps.

Anonymous said...

They put a schedule up. I wonder if they had a lot of complaints and took action or if they were just behind everybody.

Anonymous said...

Look at that training camp is open to the public this yr, training camp roster also included.

Ty Schultz is not in camp?

Anonymous said...

Anyone see the scrimmage? Any standouts?

Anonymous said...

Where is Schultz????

Anonymous said...

Mark Rassell was a monster in tonight's scrimmage according to my buddy who was there.

Anonymous said...

Is Schultz not there because he is going to play in China? Is this the Tigers Ty Schultz?? I kinda this so....

https://www.nbcnews.com/https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/china-searches-hockey-talent-outside-its-borders-ahead-2022-olympics-n774816

Schultz won't be coming this year. He has serious Injury that won't have him on skates for at least 5 months from what I've heard so he won't be coming. I think this is probably why they have held onto Forrest this long so if Rubins isn't healthy to start the year they will have Forrest still.

TigerTurf said...

Yes that is the same Ty Schultz.

Schultz did an ask me anything on the Tigers website located here:
http://tigershockey.com/video/ask-me-anything-15-ty-schultz-2

Their is a question near the end that asks about anything unique about his family. He says his grandma broke the high jump record in 1957 which is exactly what that NBC article says.

That article does say he couldn't attend their camp because he has a sports hernia...so he may just be injured...
--------------
Rassell, hamblin, gerlach were noticeable and trying hard. Dalton Gally was also trying hard throwing hits all over the place..

For new players

Their goaltender they drafted in round 1 and just signed Garin Bjorkland I thought looked very similar to tyler bunz. His positioning and mobility looked very impressive for a 15yr old.

I also liked Cole Clayton

Anonymous said...

How many roster spots are there this season? It seems there is some talent in the 16 and 17 range.

Anonymous said...

Who were the standouts in tonight's scrimmage?

TigerTurf said...

Didn't make it tonight..maybe another will comment...
----
WHL standard is 14 forwards, 7 D, 2 goalies for 23 players....

At forward they are already packed. If we count Josh Williams making the team, which is likely, the tigers are already at their 14 forwards. I could see anywhere from 0-2 depending on OA situation.

On defence, probably looking at 2-3 spots depending on OA situation.

Anonymous said...

Saw this on Twitter:
Tyler Preziuso looks like a new man entering this season. Added 18 pounds of muscle over the summer and somehow got even faster

Anonymous said...

Pre season roster is posted on the website. I know sometimes the roster is in accurate but this looks normal to me. No surprises in my eyes.

TigerTurf said...

Interesting that most of the new guys that are listed are all pretty big. Only 3 of 12 new potential players are under 6 feet.

Schultz is also not on that roster. He's gotta be on their injured list though, I don't see the Tigers releasing his rights when someone could pick him up at Christmas.

Linus Nassen - Still no word. From what I understand he is under contract for 1 more year in Sweden, but most guys have out-clauses for North America in their contracts. He is also eligible for the AHL. Sounds like the Tigers have no clue if he plans to join them or not.

TigerTurf said...

Also I completely flubbed up my comment above on expected spots.

3-4 forward spots
1-3 defenceman spots

give or take a spot

Anonymous said...

Would Schultz not be listed on the pre season roster even if he was injured???

TigerTurf said...

Well Rubins is on the roster and he is injured, but he was in town. This list is probably just guys who have reported to camp.

I'm guessing Schultz didn't attend camp, so that is why.

Anonymous said...

I have to say, it is a bit odd. Even if injured guys usually come to camp. I would imagine Schultz is going a different direction. And probably saw the writing on the wall that Rubins would be kept over him. Maybe at home waiting for a trade?

I imagine Forrest will get a lot of playing time in the pre season in hopes of the tigers trading him as well.

Anonymous said...

Thought Joel craven played well and would be on the preseason roster

Anonymous said...

The Schultz thing is bugging me. I wish someone had some insight. He is a good player. I hope we hear something.

On the other hand, some big guys in the system now, especially on defence. And Williams will be a star in this league. Exciting years to come.

Anonymous said...

Schultz is going to be injured for over half the year. So there isn't much point in coming back when we already got our 20s. He isn't waiting for a trade. It's as simple as that.

Anonymous said...

Craven was good. I was surprised by that.

Anonymous said...

Have not heard he is done for half a year from anywhere. Too bad, poor guy.

Anonymous said...

I thought craven was fine but I thought Clayton, Matichuk, and Longo were all better. Not really any room on the roster if you keep those three which I think they will.

Anonymous said...

Anyone know why Josh McNeil isn't here. He is a signed player and put up good numbers the games he played for the Tigers.

Anonymous said...

McNeil didn't put up great numbers in midget last year so I assume they just dropped him because they have so many other potential players.

Anonymous said...

Typical, the tigers updated the roster and craven and hopwo are now on it. I was impressed with Hopwo at camp this year. I don't see him making the team this year but I think he could be an impact player down the road.

TigerTurf said...

The Tigers/whl miss players pre-season every year, I didn't put up a post because I've been burned by that a few times.
----
Expect them to still have 15 yr olds at camp. They always bring the standout crop of 15's to the first set of weekend games to get a look at them.
----

TigerTurf said...

Corson Hopwo - He must have had a big growth spurt, If I remember correctly he was listed at 5'4 last season , but they list him as 5'10 this season.

Anonymous said...

Dalton Galley will be a guy that won't be around long into the season. To many young guys that need to stay over a mediocre 19 year old.

Anonymous said...

Hopswo might be one of those later picks that surprised everyone. 7th rounders often dont see anytime in the WHL. He was very impressive on the ice. Looking forward to him pushing for a spot. I like his aggressive play.

Anonymous said...

Dawson Heathcote might be another. He put up some big numbers in Junior B last year and in midget the year before. Also won rookie of the year last year

Kirichenko improved so much in the last half of the year, that IMO he would be a candidate, for attempting pro after CIS

Schultz is over in china playing for the khl

Anonymous said...

It has nothing to do with Schultz's injury, he decided to go play for china for khl

Anonymous said...

I am shocked he would make the KHL to be honest. He was not going to make a 20 year old spot in junior......so kinda surprised. But all the best to him.

Anonymous said...

Given that the Tigers had his rights for this season, does the KHL have to pay the Tigers for Ty? Or how does that work?

Anonymous said...

Where did you find out he is playing in China? I can not find anything with a google search or a search on the KHL site. I am assuming he is trying out with the Kunlun Red Star team.

Anonymous said...

James Hamblin has been invited to the Boston Bruins training camp.

Anonymous said...

Ane Max Gerlach has been invited to the Arizona Coyotes rookie camp.

TigerTurf said...

Good for Hamblin - He transformed his game last season and should be a big force to be reckoned with this year.
--------
KHL is good hockey. If Schultz went to Russia I would think it would be for their MHL Junior affiliate of the same team name.

but I don't see any transaction or news article listed anywhere about it, although It can be quite difficult to find news articles written in chinese or russian.

Anonymous said...

That is what I thought, there would have to be a transaction approved by the Tigers. Nothing on Eliteprospects which usually is pretty good with transactions.

Anonymous said...

Kaeden Lane has been signed to a WHL Standard Player Agreement. Expected to play tomorrow night.

Anonymous said...

Add another signing, Mick Kohler. Will make his debut tonight in Lethbridge.

Anonymous said...

Someone asked Ryan McCracken on twitter (Medicine Hat news reporter) whats going on with Shcutlz. He provided this.

He isn't on the preseason roster and wasn't at leadership meetings. I don't expect him to return. Will confirm this post-game.

Anonymous said...

I cant watch/listen to the game, can someone kindly post what McCracken says?

Also, post game thoughts?

Anonymous said...

Is there anywhere to get game updates? I was guessing Tiger twitter but nothing.

Anonymous said...

Heads up, tigers twitter is not posting anything (pathetic). But the Hurricanes are. 1-1 right now. No idea the tigers scorer.

Josh Williams is going to be a superstar in this league!

Anonymous said...

Williams is already turning heads. Excited to see if he can keep it up during the regular season. Preseason is always easier. But I agree, he has the potential to be a superstar in this league.

Anonymous said...

Did McCracken provide any info on Schultz?

Anonymous said...

Same person asked McCracken again last night and all he tweeted was: Schultz won't be returning this season

Anonymous said...

Rather disappointing explanation.

Anonymous said...

Another kid in the prospect pool, Nick McCarry signed. Expected to play Saturday in Moose Jaw.

Anonymous said...

Tigers sign Nick Mccarry. I didn't pay much attention coming into camp about him but I definitely noticed him as things went along. Small agile guy who looks like he can make some plays. Good signing in my eyes. Low risk high reward for an undrafted player.

TigerTurf said...

I noticed him. He was very small but very intelligent on the ice surface

Anonymous said...

Not sure why the big concern by some over Ty Schultz. Chances are with Rubins returning he wouldn't have been in the mix anyways.

Anonymous said...

Some of us want to know about Schultz, whats the big deal with wanting to know?

Love the McCarry signing! Saw him play last year and he is shifty and good with the puck. I agree, low risk with potential high reward!

Anonymous said...

I agree, fans of the team, invested fan, so kinda want to know why he did not come. Big enough fan that I follow a lot of the guys after then leave. Not sure why this would be any different! Will follow how he does in China if he is there. THAT is why I want to know. Plus, what does it matter to you anon 5:38?
