Tigers Deal Haden to Saskatoon

https://chatnewstoday.ca/article/577396/tigers-trade-haden-blades-acquire-logan-christensen
In return the Tigers acquire 19 year old Logan Christensen.

Logan is a Left Handed Centreman who has played a full 3 seasons in the WHL.

Logan Christensen

Thoughts
Logan seems to be in a similar situation as to Haden. Straight up deal for players looking for fresh starts on new teams.

Tigers have finally found a home for Gary Haden in a one for one swap with the Saskatoon Blades. Gary reunited with Max Gerlach.

Clouston usually gets good value back in his trades but I think we might have lost this one. It’s too early to tell because I don’t know about Christensen but I would have just preferred if we got a draft pick and gave more ice time to guys like Hopwo since we don’t appear to be contenders this year.

I'm not surprised they got a player in return as without Haden they only had 1 extra forward.
At the same time I'm surprised they got an older veteran player back.

The two players seem like they are in similar situations...

Christensen's numbers looked good for 16 & 17, but a big drop off last season.

This could be a win-win for both teams.

According to Clouston he has a ruptured spleen in his 18 year old year which kept him out for a long time, then he had a hard time coming back. Maybe a new start with a different team and outlook will be just what he needs.

That third period, overtime and shootout tonight is the most disappointed I've been in this team all year. They totally quit and left Sogaard to try to win the game by himeself. I never agree with Clouston's choices in the shootout but tonight was a joke. Hamblin yes, but why not your veterans in Jevne, Chyzowski, Presuzio??

Because if you have watched games all year Lockner and Williams have scored in the shootout before. I understand being upset with the choices but they have shootouts after practice all the time. The coach knows who gives them a better shot at winning.

Probably just more upset with the outcome than those particular players.

I agree with catfan re disappointment about third period etc. The Tigers literally stood around and watched moose jaw. Our dmen must be trying to collectively win the league most gentlemanly player award... I've never seen such passive dmen around their own net.... We need some sand in the belly and fire!

The team looks average this year. Hope we make playoffs but I do not expect a long run. With this thought I thought that it might be a good risk to trade Hollet. He is a great goalie, but we have Mads who has been excellent. Bjorkland can be back up and get a decent number of games in. The return for Hollett could be good, given that he would have another year in the WHL. Why not try to build a bit, would like to see the tigers actually make a run sometime rather then just stick with the status quo.

Bjorklund(16) can only be called up for 5 games as he is playing Midget AAA. Kaeden lane can be permanently called up as a 17 year old playing Junior A.

With goalies confidence is everything. I feel Hollett is feeling the pressure & interest surrounding Sogaard and trying to play perfect. It's leading to jittery hands and speeding the game up. He is concentrating too much on his reaction time and has lost his technique which made him a very solid goaltender.

Right now the Tigers don't have a starter. They have 2 top notch goaltenders. 1 Is on a Hot Streak, 1 is on a cold streak.

In terms of trade it's something in the back of their heads to evaluate near the trade deadline, but I wouldn't entertain the idea at the moment. Enjoy their position of strength and continually evaluate during the Christmas run.

If come Christmas Sogaard has run the table, I would agree this becomes a legitimate question.

I was initially thinking Hollett was a for-sure goner next season but...Taking an updated peak at Ottawa's NHL system it may be difficult to judge if they have room or not. It depends on if their older AHL goalie comes back and if they re-sign a goaltender on the last year of his ELC. Age may play a big factor. Hollett isn't signed yet, the longer he goes un-signed I think the better the chance he returns as it's an indication they sign for his rights rather than signed for pre-determined plan of bringing him up.

Overall, I feel the Tigers have definitely taken big strides in their game.

Offensively - They had a habit of just running around the outside and then trying a shot through shin-pads when they ran out of room. Now they are going for set plays that are producing more offensive prime chances. They are doing a better job at driving to the net which causes opposition to cover people down low and opens up ice somewhere else.

Their have been a couple players Heathcote, Ostir, who've stepped up their game another notch. I also like them moving Brown back to wing, he seems more energized.

Defensively - I was more annoyed by the tieing goal. Their defensive coverage was poor with their most defensive players on the ice. They likely don't practice 6v5 very often, but 3 forwards kept trying to block the centre shot and it was opening up too much ice, where MJ was getting prime shots at the top of the faceoff circle.

Occasionally games like that happen, just glad it wasn't against a divisional opponent. MJ relied quite heavily on their top players and they were being double/triple shifted. They even moved their top offensive defenceman up front as a forward.

If Sogaard continues to play extremely good then I think shopping Hollett is the right thing to do. The future is bright in goal and I feel like we could use the assets to try and make other areas of the team stronger.

Just confirming the comment about Bjorklund only being able to play 5 games this season. I thought that was only true for 15 year olds. I don't believe 16 year old signed players have a game number restriction although I might be mistaken. I would think they will call up Bjorklund during the world juniors when Sogaard is with Denmark. That will be a good test and could provide more insight as to what happens by trade deadline.

I can't remember. For some reason I'm thinking because he was assigned to midget he is restricted until his team finishes the season.

I think 16 year olds can only play 5 games but there is always ways around that. Last year Prokop (15) in Calgary played lots of games because they made a request to the league because of injuries. I’d like to think if the tigers really wanted Bjorklund to back up, then the league would let them but I’m not sure.

15 year olds can only play 5 games until their club is eliminated from league playoffs or miss the playoffs and 16 year olds must plat at least 40 games if they stay in the WHL.

15 year olds can play more if the league accepts the teams request. It’s happened before.
I’m aware of the 40 game rule for 16 year olds but I’ve seen cases were some 16s don’t get all 40 games in.

Everyone still think it's the coach's fault when players ask out for a trade? Henrik Rybinski has asked for a trade due to ice time as well.

“In recent discussions, Henry, though his agent and his family, let us know that they were looking for increased ice time and a top two centreman role for Henry on our team,” stated Tigers General Manager and Head Coach Shaun Clouston. “With our Team Captain James Hamblin and Assistant Captain Ryan Chyzowski currently our top two centremen we are not able or willing to meet that request.

I don’t ever bad mouth kids but hearing this makes me really upset. Your a 17 year old, you can’t just expect top 6 minutes when he hasn’t proved he belongs there. Unreal.

Anonymous said...

totally agree unreal. Come on buddy get your head out of the clouds & be a team player. Hockey is that. Its not all about you!!!!

Anonymous said...

I agree with both of you 100%. Just sad to see these kids seeking high demands. Like Fischer just leaving because he had no one to play with, Gary and Henry both wanted out due to ice time.

I saw that Vancouver just had their top scorer ask for a trade.... He got his wish - from division leading team to basement dweller... That worked out well.

Rybinski plays hard but had not demonstrated top 6 play making skills in my opinion. I think he has to show more to get that role io any team... Hope he fares well
