Bantam Draft Reviews (2011,2012,2013)

This year's crop Located @ Tigers Website

Thoughts
Too early to tell. They had 6 picks in the top 3 rounds. As long as the scouts did well come 2023-2024 the Tigers should see an upswing season barring trades etc.

Thoughts
This was an incredible Draft. Their top 3 picks all turned into key players. They also drafted 2 gems in the later rounds. Unfortunately, 1 didn't come to the WHL and will likely be a star defenceman in the NHL. If Makar had come over it would have been a draft for the history books, nonetheless an above average draft with 4 key players and a depth player.

Thoughts
I feel the Tigers did very well considering their positioning @ 16th overall and no 3rd or 4th round picks. They still found 1 star, 1 core player, and 1 depth player.  If you were to string a couple of these types of drafts back to back, it would pose talent problems with the lineup.

It was a slightly underwhelming draft but they did pretty well-finding talent with lean pick selection.

Thoughts
The Tigers did extremely well because they had a late-round selection and no 2nd round pick. They found 2 whl stars and 2 depth players

Calgary made a big deal for Star Moose Jaw Warriors Defenceman Jett Woo.

Tigers draft the smallest player in round 1 at 5'5.When are they going to learn small teams dont win championships.Been putting together small teams for years and where has that got us.Big kid that skates just as well as smaller player will win the battle every time.

Anonymous said...

They have not learned that and will not with the current GM.

Of the first 105 picks, which encompasses the first five rounds there was only 18 players 6' and over picked so the Tigers were not alone drafting small players. Weisblatt was ranked number 14 by draft geek so it's not like they went way off the board with their pick. His brothers are in the 5'10" range so he'll most likely grow some before he shows up here. Ive seen him play twice and he was a ball of fire both times, doesn't shy away from contact and in most cases initiated and he's got lots of skill.

Max Gerlach was 5'5 when he was drafted at 14. He is only 5'9 now but he has been a 30 goals a season scorer since his rookie season when he was 17.
Whether Wiesblatt grows 4 inches or not doesn't matter, what matters is what he can do with the puck and like longtimefan said he doesn't shy away from contact so he won't be a little guy getting pushed around

I don't agree that those drafts are so successful. As another poster mentioned too many small players. You cannot succeed having the same type of players. Need a mix.

TigerTurf said...

If you look up the heights of the past championship teams they all have a good mix of sizes.
They have the 6"3 power forwards. They also have the 5'8 skilled slippery players.

I agree thoroughly that the best team chemistry includes a mix of sizes.

Soo it is our 50th Anniversary season and I got my season ticket renewal in the mail. No letter accompanying it like previous years, nothing special to honor the 50th. Just the same old, same old. Very disappointing!!

Anonymous said...

That is why after 30 years of season tickets I'm going to say goodbye ...the owners are 50 years behind the times

Anonymous said...

You have got to be kidding?!!!
Nothing for the season ticket holders to celebrate 50 YEARS, absolutely pathetic.
Thanks for nothing fans!!!!

What did you expect?

I'm looking forward to rookie camp this weekend. Sounds like all events that are open to the public will be at FLC.

I watched some of the prospects today and I can honestly say I was impressed and I am one who admits that too much. I was questioning buying season tickets again however I can say that watching these kids today changed my mind - I will be buying again. Our first round pick Oasiz W. was incredible and super quick. Yes, he is small but he doesn't shy away from the big guys at all. Unfortunately they didn't have the players listed with jersey numbers so I wasn't able to figure out who some of the other players and goalies were so hopefully tomorrow they have that available for fans going to watch. As for the goalies they were all pretty strong - there were only 3 at camp. My favorite was 33 but not sure of his name. He resembles Mads because he is super tall and has good positioning although not as quick as Mads but I think once he gets used to this speed of play that will improve. There is a lot of promise coming so to those of you questioning buying season tickets again...I say go tomorrow (Sunday) and watch the black vs white game - see for yourself. Oh and hats off to Dylan MacPherson and Jaeger White for suiting up and playing with the prospects today - well done.

33 was Liam Vaderkooi I believe. I personally thought Cayden Glover looked pretty good. He is pretty close to 6 feet tall and skates well and can really shoot the puck. I thought Rhett parsons also looked pretty solid from what I seen today.

Wow, there it is. The Medicine Hat Tigers announced this morning that the Hockey Club and General Manager/ Head Coach Shaun Clouston have parted ways. Will be interesting to see how the Tigers do this upcoming season.

Anonymous said...

Just saw that about Clouston, I am on my way now to renew my season tickets!

Anonymous said...

I think you and a few other from the city are about to do the exact same thing. Will be very interesting to see if the Tigers can make the playoffs without Clouston. They made the playoffs 8 out of the last 9 years under Shaun and some of those years they shouldn't have even been a playoff team.

YAHOOOOOOOO!!! Great news , thought we were going to be stuck with him for another year.Is there a chance Willie comes back and runs his academy on the side??I would think they have someone lined up because the Import Draft is in another month.Looking forward to a fresh start it was time.At least we wont have to see Sillinger and Weisblatt ask for trades out of town in a year or two.

Greg Drinnan who has reported on the WHL forever is reporting Willie Desjardins has agreed to become the head coach and gm of the Tigers. Press conference tomorrow at 10am.
