The Injury lists Jordan Hollett as out 4 to 6 weeks, but apparently they are still waiting for a doctor diagnoses.

Been watching this team since their inception and I don't recall any team having so many serious injuries at one time. All these guys except Joel Craven (not belittling him at all) are seriously important pieces to this team.

ReplyDeleteInjuries are the most unfortunate part of the game and never wish them on any player, but on the flip side now other players should get the opportunity to step and show their talent. All I hope is that Clouston doesn't start double shifting his top guys just to win, because if that's the case (as per usual) they will have absolutely nothing left come playoffs.

ReplyDeleteThe National Woman’s team prepares for the Olympics by competing in Alberta’s Midget AAA league which is made up of the best 15-17 year olds that haven’t moved onto the WHL or other the AJHL. They played each team once and had a record of 10-4-4 this year. They did the same in preparation of the Sochi games and had a record of 3-11-4. As impressive as our ladies are, they wouldn’t be able to compete with any WHL teams.

ReplyDeleteDaniel Baker has looked amazing on the back-end. Very strong defensive IQ, something the Tigers badly need with their Dmen. Baker and Craven have potential to be future #1 Dmen.
Cole Clayton is also benefitting a lot with the extra IceTime.

Elijah Brown has impressed me a lot. Intelligent playmaker and likes to set up his teammates. Ton of speed with very good lateral ability. I think he has a very strong chance of being a PPG next season.

I Agree with what you said about Baker. Also hoping Craven can make a return this year. Brown does have a lot of talent but I personally think he could maybe pass the puck a bit more. A couple times he has had chances and instead of passing or shooting he has tried to deke and he had lost the puck. I like the creativity and his willingness to take a risk but I think there has been certain times where he has missed the opportunity to make the "right pass".
ReplyDeleteIf I'm in charge I don't think preziuso is on my team next year because we have more young guys that need the ice. Preziuso has speed but he just doesn't generate offence. I wouldn't say he hurts the team but I expected so much more from him this year.
Can the tigers go far in the playoffs? If not could they in the next five years?

Fully healthy they are talented enough to reach round 3 and give their opponent lots of trouble. However, I don't really have any expectations for them to get that far because of the injuries they've had. They would be going into the playoffs with multiple players just getting back and a total re-organization of line combinations. It will be interesting.

I think their best chance for a long run is 2 years down the road If Hollett stays as a 20.
They look to dress an exceptional defence and goaltending. By my count 7 forwards are potential PPG players, with a couple more that could knock on the door. Add 2 Imports to that mix.

Anon @ 6:58. Why do you say that? The average 16yr old scores at a rate of .162 pts per game. Williams is scoring at a .36 pts per game rate. That is far from a bust.

ReplyDeleteMy opinion in no order about the best 16 year olds would have to be Krebs, Cozens, Byram, Dach.
I think Williams will get there. He has great speed and size for his age and he wins a ton of battles against older players. I wouldn't be shocked at all if he came out and scored 25 goals next year.

With this in mind you definitely are not trading anyone in the 2000 group because that group along with the 2001s has "championship potential". Therefore like I said earlier you probably move a 1999 forward or two to make room for the young guys.

ReplyDeleteAlso, Baker is a lock for next year, he looks like a vet out there. Hopwo was good when he was here along with Fedyk. They have a lot of talent in the pipeline. Will be interesting to see how is back goalie next year, will they go with a 16 as back up?
Any one know if Craven is improving? Still so angry about that hit. 5 games was a pretty cheap suspension.

They'll tinker most likely. I don't feel like they will have to make a move. It will be difficult for a 16yr old to make the roster. If say preziuso can't kick it into high gear a rookie could take his spot.

In 2020 the WHl hosts the Memorial Cup. I believe Kamloops intend to make a bid. Victoria and Kelowna are looking at bids. If the Tigers were to ever make a bid 2020 would be a good year to do it.

ReplyDeleteI'm nervous that the wild have an aging minor league team with 15 contracts expiring next season. We'll see how his knee injury and 5'9 size plays out. For sure I'll be paying attention to their signings for next season.
Tigers turf I think your lines are forgeting your comments earlier in the year about coaches needing to develop young players.

I think the team will have to make trades to give opportunity to young kids or more kids will leave. Med Hat is becoming the worst place in the league for developing young players
You're right, I see what you're getting at. I haven't really put much thought into next season yet, I was more focused on when these younger kids mature...and my brain was bypassing next year.
ReplyDeleteAfter training camp and the start of the season you're right they will be pretty stuffed. At that point yes, they will very likely need to make adjustments.
I do feel though their team will be more of a scoring by committee approach where the 3rd line is more of a 2nd scoring line.

Preziuso could be on the block. perhaps they keep nassen as a 2 spotter, and take a couple Flyer picks on elite Euro's. Guys like anderson, heathcote/van impe/fedyck could be at risk for lesser icetime. 1 of Bjorklund/lane won't be happy. Do they give a spot to an 18yr old jaxon steele, who's putting up decent numbers in the AJHL? What about Jalen price as a 17yr old in a 2nd tier league

So yeah, maneuvering in those water will be extremely tricky and your right movement is bound to happen. Next years training camp is going to be a doozy.
Agreed hopefully this team can finish the year and make some noise but next years training camp is going to be intense. So many players and so few spots.

I would rather see a young team with lots of 16s/17s/18s getting ice time with the hopes of making a team that makes it to the mem cup in a couple years. Trade Prezusio - he could likely use a fresh start elsewhere, give him an opportunity to make a go of his career.
ReplyDeleteI think the thing that should be said that no seems to want to acknowledge is that Williams is over-rated. He is physically one of the biggest forwards on the Tigers despite being 16, always played power play this year and has at best mediocre numbers. He is soft and cheats high. He will be a good player not a superstar. Saying he is one of the top 16 year olds at this point isn't being honest.

I said He would be tied for 5th with a few others just in the East, purely because I haven't watched them all enough to make an informed judgment. That doesn't include everyone from the west, which I am unfamiliar with. If I had made a list of the league I don't know where he would end up 10th? 12th? 15th? 20th? I feel such lists aren't important.

My personal opinion on Williams is that early in the year the Tigers expected too much out of him. He was playing on the top line, playing slightly over his head. He had a clear case of.... his hands were trying to move quicker than he could think the game.
After Williams came back from his injury the Tigers had more depth and are playing him in a role more suited for development. I haven't paid him too much attention lately, but I'll watch him closely tonight and give more thoughts.

FYI Linden Vey had similar stats to Williams as a 16.
I am a Williams fan, I think he has potential. Lots of guys develop at different times, I think at 16 it is unfair to write him off........
ReplyDeleteWilliams is hardly overrated. If you think that then obviously you don't follow junior hockey closely enough. He started mediocre like any 16 year old and then when he started finding his game he broke his collarbone. Now that he has been back he has been playing 4th line and is really starting to look good. Only the very best 16 year olds put up good numbers their first year.
ReplyDeleteIf you look at points per game among 16 year olds Williams is 7th in the league. Factor in that he had a major injury and he has been playing on the 4th line almost the whole year.
He wins a lot of battles against older players and he has good speed. He was on the best players at the u17s in the summer and I'm not just saying that. I watched all those games and many people agreed with me on that. He had 2 goals and 4 assists in 3 games playing against the best kids in his age group.
I expect him to finish the year strong and maybe score 25 goals next year.

ReplyDeleteHe doesn't like to battle on the boards and in the corners. He likes to hang high and cheat and is not strong on the backcheck or defensive play. He doesn't make his linemates better as he needs someone to feed him and do the work. He skates and shoots well but for our biggest forward 6'2 188lbs, he is not physical. No one is on the Tigers.
He would not be chosen 5th overall today if the WHL draft were done over but he would still be in the first round.
On another topic, is anyone tired of Clueless and the dump and chase the Tigers play? How about how many breakaways we give up every game.

I believe krebs and maybe dach(top two picks from that draft)I've watched cozens and he's a good player but I wouldn't say he makes players around him better. Only the best 16 year olds have that ability and I believe there is only 2 or 3 of those guys.
You can never write off a 16 year old. It's to early. For example
Hamblin at 16: 2 goals and 1 assist
Hamblin at 17: 23 goals and 24 assists
Chyzowski at 16: 5 goals and 7 assists
Chyzowski at 17: currently at 18 goals and 26 assists
Williams I believe is way better than both those guys were at 16 and the numbers show that. Obviously it's no guarantee but I could see Williams putting up 25 goals next year.
Would Williams still go 5th overall maybe not however that is the way the draft goes. Some guys develop differently.
Yesh, tough crowd on a 16 year old kid who is doing well, has a regular spot in the line up, has overcome a big injury this year...... ease arm chair scouts and gm's!!

Are not hard on it in the corners ( I get it there young) - the turn overs from rybinski are quite visible time and time again and there is little or no back checking from both of them
Williams played on the power play and on top
Two lines for a minimum of 12 games before injury and his points were below were they should have been in my opinion , with that ice time and players he was with
Ostir will be returning this week more than likely benching Heathcote and Anderson
It will be interesting to see what player will be sitting in the stands if Shaw returns surely one of the two above
Playoffs will shorten the bench to 3 lines I would have to guess - not much action from a 4th line in near future

Does anyone know when Shaw will play I know he's back in the Hat skating and working out...as for Williams he's the real deal and will make a huge jump next season. Still not a fan of Quenneville's play in his own end, quite a let down actually. It truly baffles me that White continues to take up a roster spot he better not be one of our 20 yr olds come next yr!
ReplyDeleteQueneville's play in his own end may be suspect at times but he brings so much to the team. He makes a lot of heads up passes and just think how many of rassell's breakaways were a result of good passes from Q. He has great patience that may get him in trouble occasionally but more often than not makes a good play. Then you have his ability to shoot the puck on the PP. I'll take him on my team any day. You can't have a full team of guys like him but when you have one it sure is nice.

On the debate about Q, he is not the dynamic superstar that fans thinks he is. He is a defensive liability on the ice, however he has a good shot and the game is won in the defensive zone especially in the playoffs. Just look at his plus minus rating, it's pathetic for the points he has. Fans love him cuz he showboats all the time and that's fine if you can back it up.

I'm going to Disagree with you anon12:08. Queneville isn't great defensively but you bring up his plus minus rating saying it's pathetic. Well guess what powerplay goals don't count as a plus. So think about all the times he has gotten a powerplay point and take that out of the equation. His plus minus rating doesn't look so bad no does it. It is a +4 which really isn't awful when you look how low a couple of our dmen are.

Compare his numbers to a Cale Clague or even a Connor Hobbs from Regina last year, not even close. It also indicates that he can only put up numbers on the powerplay (that's great), but again means he's an average dman especially 5 on 5. Watch his skating abilities, they are below average and if anyone thinks he's NHL quality, that's not happening. He will honestly be lucky to sign a contract and that will only happen because of his numbers, he will never play higher than the AHL and he will struggle there too.

Quenneville is both a weapon that a team needs to win, and a potential weakness that another team can exploit. I think this is common knowledge to any hockey fan with any degree of hockey sense.
You need those guys to win as long as their weaknesses are minimized. (that's the coaches job)
IMO Quenneville is great junior player, but in terms of pro potential their is a barrier with his size/skating and defensive game.
Yes he needs significant improvement in that area if he wants to be a pro. I hope he gets signed, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't happen and he goes back into the draft.

I feel that Rassell has been trying extra hard lately to score goals, and I could see frustrations in his game prior to the Edmonton game, which is rare to see.
I hope he can enjoy the last 8 games and have fun rather than worrying about the potential stress of reaching 50 goals.
