Tigers 0 vs Oil Kings 5

Tyler Bunz gets the start in Goal.

Overagers Dressed
Colton Grant is dressed
Bretton Cameron is dressed
Mark Isherwood is dressed
Ryan Holfeld is scratched

16 yr olds Dressed
Dylan Bredo
Dylan Businius

1st period
Tigers start the game really strong.

1-0 Oil Kings. EDM Raedeke, (5) , 8:35
Isherwood gave the puck away on a bad cross ice D to D pass, and the Oil Kings Score, on a breakaway.

Well after a good start the tigers were caught with a couple penalties, and a bad giveaway by Mark Isherwood totally killed their momentum. The Oil Kings started playing better and threw quite a few shots on net. Subtract the Isherwood giveaway and its a fairly even period, slight edge to the Oil Kings.
End Of First

2nd Period
Oil Kings 2-0. Soudek, (1)
Matt Konan pinched and crunched a guy at the blueline. OIl kings got a breakaway and scored. Right after the tigers are on a 5-3 penalty kill.

3-0. Oil Kings Raedeke, (6) (Lowe, Vincour), 6:29.
Was a scramble in front of the net. Bunz got bumped,Jayce Coyle kicked the puck out to the blueline and Brett Raedeke roofed a wrist shot. Raedeke, (6) (Lowe, Vincour), 6:29

4-0 Oil Kings. Breitkreuz, (1) (Van de Mosselaer), 11:13.
Brett Breitkruiz roofed a perfect shot up high off the wing.

Fight Breitkreuz, Brett vs Mark Isherwood
3 seconds from the faceoff these to come together and start hugging. Isherwood was pretty much bear hugging the whole time while Breitkreuz tried to throw punches to the back off Isherwood's Head.

Tigers finally get a good shift. 3 or 4 High quality scoring chances but they just cant beat Torrie Jung.

5-0 Oil Kings Burns, (1) (Ewanyk), 16:31.
Scrum behind the net and Micheal Burns was left untouched in the slot and scored. I missed the change but Tyler Bunz was pulled. Devan Dubyk in the net for that last goal, cant fault him for that one though.

Ugg that was ugly. The tigers aren't skating at all. Their forwards aren't getting open their defense are playing whack a puck and hoping it reaches the target. The oil kings are scoring on every chance they get. TO make matters worse all 5 goals were even strength goals.
End Of Second

Third Period
No scoring. Tigers had more or less the same kind of period. Making poor decisions, with the puck.
End Of Third
-------------------------------------------
Sum: Tigers started off pretty good, playing in the Oil Kings end for the first 4 minutes, but after that everything fell apart. The Oil Kings looked hungrier and played really good defensively, collapsing to the net, and clearing all the rebounds.

The oil Kings had that kind of game where their good chances were going in. Compared to last game vs Kootenay it was Night and Day. Oil Kings were shooting everything up high, and Bunz was having trouble with it. The new goalie looked good in his debut, played well positionally.

If the Tigers want to be a contending team efforts/mistakes like that can not happen.

3 Stars
1st Star Torrie Jung
2nd Star Drew Nichol
3rs Star Brent Raedeke

Tigers Make Trade

Medicine Hat, AB - Medicine Hat Tigers announce today they have made a trade with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Tigers sent 17-year-old prospect forward Michael Forsyth and a 6th round bantam pick to the Warriors for 19-year-old forward Matt MacKay and 18-year-old goaltender Deven Dubyk.
"Matt is a skilled forward with good hands who works real hard from the top of the circles down to the net," said Tigers' general manager/head coach Willie Desjardins. "We are excited to have Matt join our team. He was at Minnesota Wild's training camp this year and we are looking forward to what he can bring to our club."

MacKay, from Calgary, AB, is a 5' 11", 190 lbs centre man who played in 31 games last season with the Warriors, scoring 6 goals and adding 3 assists for 9 points along with 19 penalty minutes.

"Deven is a player who is looking for a new start in the WHL," stated Desjardins. "He was just named the SJHL player of the week and has had a terrific start with Notre Dame Hounds."

"Our goaltending coach, J.F. Martel, worked with Deven this summer and liked what he saw. Deven has the potential to be a very good goaltender," concluded Desjardins.

The Minitonas, MB native stands 6'3" and weighs in at 180 lbs. He appeared in 35 games for Moose Jaw last year posting a 4.57 goals against average and 0.866 save percentage.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Thoughts
I think the writing is on the wall for Ryan Holfeld, and Colton Grant. IF they planned on moving Holfeld they would of had to acquire another goaltender and they did that with this trade. I would expect Kundratek, Isherwood, and Cameron to be the 20's this year, barring any major injuries, or unexpected trade offers.

About aquiring another 19 year old forward. I'm thinking the Tigers are going to try and make an extended run this year. Their defense looks amazing, and they have a very solid group of forwards. They might not boast the firepower of other teams, but every line is solid. The other teams won't win a war of attrition against the tigers. Also the tigers are a tiny bit bigger, much faster, and play the body more.

They also have injury protection in the forward and defender positions. The tigers will still have to make a move or two regarding their 16 year olds. I think Dylan Businius will be the odd guy out on teh blueline, just because there isn't any room for him.

19 Year Olds
As for their 19 year olds a lot of people are wondering what the hell the tigers are doing by stacking so many of them this year. I think they are doing it for depth. I see the tigers trying to challenge this year. I could also see one or two of them them being dealt later in teh year, if they were to acquire a top talent. The tigers do have an extra 2nd and 3rd round pick for trading trevor glass.

The tigers are already semi-rebuilding in a sense that they have a bundle of good 16-17 year olds. Their 19 year group of bottom round picks(and FA pickups) who they have stuck with has matured. And the tigers are going to see how far they can run the table.

New Poll

EDIT:
There are rumors afloat about a deal in the works. Some have heard some names being thrown around and a couple of people are saying its a done deal. Nothing is official as of yet, here is the rumor

To MH: Devan Dubyk 18 Goaltender, Matt MacKay C 19 yr old
To MJ: Mike Forsyth 17yr old, 6th round bantam pick
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I added a New Poll at the top of the page, about the Tigers goal celebrations.

Some background In case you haven't watched the tigers yet:
Usually after goal is scored the team will skate to the bench to "tap gloves" with the rest of the team on the bench and the goalie.

This year the players skate by the bench and goalie with their elbows and tap elbows with each other.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

There is one fan report that mentions Tomas Kundratek has returned to the team.
As noted by bluedino in the comments section in the previous post.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
*removed* copy and pasted the wrong thing

09/28/2009 Tomas Kundratek (D) Medicine Hat ADD Signed to
the whl site confirms.

Thomas Kundratek Re-assigned Part 2

A game summary vs the Kootenay game in the previous post below.

I found an article from a knowledgeable NY Rangers blogger and will post a piece of it.

Thomas Kundratek
"There was little surprise in those players that were either reassigned or released today"....... "and Tomas Kundratek was reassigned to Medicine Hat (for the second time)."

When I spoke to Kundratek last night, he thought he would be sent back to junior. When I asked whether he would go, he smiled and said, “I don’t know.” But Head Coach Ken Gernander responded to my inquiries about this particular reassignment saying that Kundratek “did not seem unhappy.” I am definitely not as sure as Gernander is about this, and not sure that Kundratek will report. I certainly hope so, as there is no question in my mind that he will benefit greatly from another year of junior, but there is a lot of money in Europe, so I am holding my breath that he will report. Kundratek has an excellent shot, and will be a very good professional defensive blueliner in two to three years, but, at this point, he is so thin, its hard to believe that he plays as well as he does.
http://hfrangersblog.com/

---------------------------------------------------------------

If he does report. This complicates the overager situation and amount of D-men the tigers have. Colton Grant has been a healthy scratch for all 3 games. I don't see the tigers letting Ish, or Cameron go.

The tigers still have 6 - 16 yr olds on the roster, which they will need to cut at least 2. Kundratek coming back would also put them at 9 defenseman.

Tigers Beat Kootenay 4-2

I watched the game on webcast, and took a few notes. Here they are, nothing too detailed.

Colin Mopanschuck, Scott McKay both played tonight. Colton Grant was another overager scratch. The whl gamesheet is very inaccurate on who scored and who dressed as of Saturday night. Tyler Bunz would get the start in goal.

Interesting Note: Wacey Hamilton was a scratch tonight. The official reason was the "flu". But If you watched the game last night you could see a play where he went laboring off the ice with an obvious shoulder injury after missing a hit and ramming into the boards.

Willie Desjardin would get his 300th regular season victory. Last year the tigers failed to win vs the Kootenay Ice, getting only 1 point out of 6 games.

First Period
The game started out with both teams playing well defensively and either team couldn't generate many scoring chances. The tigers would start to pressure Kootenay in their own end generated quite a few good quality chances. Finally near the end of the period the tigers had a 4-3 rush up the ice, Linden Vey would receive a cross ice pass and slam it home into a semi-open net. 1-0 Tigers

My internet decided it would be a nice time to cut out for 10 minutes, and when I came back the score was 3-1 Tigers.

Emerson Etem scored on a 5-3 powerplay off a goal mouth scramble, and the Ice scored on a long shot from the point.
Kale Kessey was also stoned on a breakaway.

Second Period
Kootenay would get a 5on3 PP after Cody carlson threw the puck over the glass.
However the tigers would Kill it off. Kootenay was in the zone for almost the entire duration and got a lot of shots on net. The tigers also blocked quite a few shots as well.

Fight
Mathew Konan vs Matt Frazer - I'm not sure how it started but it ended real quick, both guys almost hit the ice as soon as the gloves came off.

Third Period
Tyler Bunz stopped a high shot from the point. The rebound came straight down and Kootenay's Dustin Sylvester quickly banged in the rebound. 3-2 Tigers

The tigers would then be rewarded with a 5-3 PP. They looked dangerous and came close to scoring numerous times but couldn't beat Kootenay Ice goaltender Nathan Lieuwen.

Late in the game Kootenay would pull their goaltender. Mark Isherwood would clear the zone by smacking the puck off the glass and out. The puck would trickle down right into the open net, sealing the victory.
Final Score 4-2 Tigers

3 Stars
1. M.H - 24 Mark Isherwood 1 Goal 3 assists
2. KTN - 31 Nathan Lieuwen - Stopped quite a few quality chances
3. M.H - 26 Emerson Etem - 2 Goals

The whl webcast looks like it improved a little bit over last season. The double screen looks much better. But watching on a full screen is still a little blurry.

Summary: The tigers didn't play as well as on friday, but they played a pretty solid Road Game. They had a couple new players in the lineup, and they didn't look out of place.

With this Win Willie Desjardin gets his 300th regular season victory.

Tigers loose to Calgary 5-4 in a Shootout

Wow what a game.. It was pretty Impressive from a tiger standpoint.
The score IMO was not an indicator how the game went. The Tigers had half a step on the Hitmen all night, with the exception of the last couple minutes in the third and their powerplay in overtime. The tigers are also hitting ALOT MORE than they did last year. Thier Defense moved the puck very quickly and killed most Hitmen Fore checks. Overall They looked really really good, with some minor glitches, that cost them dearly.

The Hitmen came out really strong in the first period, they were hitting alot and playing pretty fast, but the tigers were finding the passing lanes and outmatching them. I was actually a little surprised by that. If Wacey Hamilton can get the team going like that every game, we as Tiger fans could be in for a very entertaining year. *Crosses Fingers*

Their were many fans frustrated by the reffing tonight. The Hitmen were awarded a goal in the second period in front of a massive dogpile in front of the tigers net. Everyone was pushing and shoving in the crease, I don't know How Chris Savage could see that puck through the whole thing. Ryan Holfeld was pushed to the side, as Calgary players were digging in and Tigers were trying to lift sticks and push guys away, Holfeld got swept out of position leaving an open net.

The tigers had a goal disallowed. Someone was pushed into the far goal post and knocked the net off, as a Tiger player banked a shot off Martin Jones pads' and in. They reviewed the play for a good 5-8 minutes and then called it no goal.

Both goals were reviewed and didn't go the Tigers way.
The Hitmen did have a few quality chances late and could have won the game in regulation, or Overtime. I thought Ryan Holfeld played a pretty poor opening couple of periods, however he did play really well in the third.

Fights
The game looked like it was getting a little nasty for a few minutes. Bretton Cameron was nailed from the side in a dangerous position into the boards, which was borderline checking form behind. Moments later Zdenik Okal hit a Hitmen Defender from behind.

There were also a few fights resulting from those hits.
Tyler Fiddler Took on Mathew Konan - one of them slipped and it was a short wrestling match.

Tanner Sohn vs Ben Wilson
Sohn was the instigator but didn't receive a penalty for it. Sohn came in swinging pretty widly while the hitmen player kept leaning back avoiding everything. Wilson threw a jab which popped Sohn under the visor by surprise. Sohn kept trying to throw punches but Wilson kept backing up easily avoiding them. They fell to the ice just as Sohn appeared to be getting an upper hand. Sohn had a little bit of blood running down as he skated to the box.

Thoughts
I was impressed by some of the veterans tonight that I haven't necessarily liked in the past. I liked Josh Koper tonight, he showed some hustle and surprised me. I thought Thomas Carr played a phenomenal game on defense. Cody Carlson played very good.

More thoughts..
Tanner Sohn wasn't pinching in every shift. Mathew Konan, and Jace Coyle were moving the puck around very fast in tight. Bretton Cameron, and Wacey Hamilton were outstanding. Cameron kept blocking shots head first which is a little dangerous, his arm is gonna be black after blocking all those shots. Reid Petryk looked good tonight too. He didn't get a lot of icetime, but he created a really good chance when he picked off the puck along the boards after a Hitmen player heard footsteps and Petryk threw it towards the net.

Mark Isherwood I thought had another difficult game, he didn't play horrible, but he can play MUCH better. 1 thing I keep noticing is how he tends to hesitate on his first good passing option out of his zone, skates a little bit then makes a low percentage pass with an opponent in the way.

Colton Grant again was the overager scratch. Business, MacCauly, Leir, Bredo, McKay were also not dressed.

Tigers Vs Calgary Preview

The Tigers have a chance at getting redeeming themselves from last year. The Hitmen absolutely dominated the tigers all year, last year.

"This is the first of six meetings between the Calgary Hitmen and the Medicine Hat Tigers this season. Last season, Medicine Hat has posted a (0-6-0-0) record versus the Hitmen (0-3-0-0 at home) and (0-3-0-0-0 in Calgary) with the Hitmen outscoring the Tigers 29-8 and out-shooting Medicine Hat 191-133.

Current Tiger, Linden Vey (3A) managed three points in six games versus Calgary. In six appearances, goaltender Ryan Holfeld (0-5-0-0) allowed 21 goals (4.43 G.A.A) on 150 shots (.860 Save %) while rookie Tyler Bunz was 0-1-0-0, allowing seven goals (5.72 G.A.A) on 41 shots (.829 Save %) in three appearances.

On the power play, the Tigers were 2 for 30 with the man advantage (06.7%), while killing off 23 of 37 Calgary power plays (62.2%). "

- Ugghh check out that PP and PK percentage thats pretty nasty.
The Hitmen are also currently in the #1 spot in the CHL.
6-2 Victory over Red Deer
4-2 Victory over Edmonton

I have been hearing a handful of rumors these past couple days. I wouldn't be surprised to hear something pop up soon.

Lethbridge Trades Kyle Beach

The Spokane Chiefs have acquired forward Kyle Beach from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for defensemen Mike Reddington and Landon Oslanski. Beach was the Chicago Blackhawks first round draft selection, 11th overall, in 2008.

Looks like Lethbridge gets a little help on defense. A little Ironic though that beach is going to a division rival of his former Team Everett Silvertips.

Tuesday Notes

Dunstall released from Everett
Travis Dunstall has already had quite the whirlwind of a season so far.
HE went from Medicine Hat to Grand Prairie storm, to Everett, and now I wonder If he is going back to grand prairie? They also had 9 over-agers earlier in the year, there may not be a spot left for him.

Tyler Ennis assigned To Portland

I was wondering if he was getting sent down soon as he didn't play in back to back exhibition games. http://sabres.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=499422&navid=DL|BUF|home

Matt McCue
The Anaheim Ducks today announced they have assigned defenceman Matt McCue to the Manitoba Moose. Also found a fight video vs Canuck Nathan McIver in preseason play. Apparently this was his second fight of the game and McCue demolish his first opponent but alas I cant find the video.

Lethbridge Herald
Has an article on the Canes Opening Weekend, and they mention some bits about playing the Tigers.
http://www.lethbridgeherald.com/content/view/95691/50/

Jace Coyle
Was named Tiger of the week. http://www.tigershockey.com/media/media.php?stype=browsei&season=2009&month=Sep&lim1=0

Overager Situation
Over at Small Thoughts At Large Alan Caldwell developed a nice list of the Current Overager Situation, and his thoughts as to Who is likely to stay or go.
http://smallatlarge.blogspot.com/

The tigers technically have 5 overagers but its looking more and more like they will only have to get rid of 1.

Potential Trading Partners?

Kelowna If Colin Long doesnt come back, they have a spot open.
Kooteny Ice: Only 2 overagers.
Lethbridge: Unlikely as they are rivals, and they are probably looking for help either on their blueline.
Calgary: One of their guys is questionable at coming back, so they might have an opening.
Everett:has acquired a few 20 yr olds. They look like their done by releasing 2 players today, but maybe its possible they go for someone else.
Vancouver: One of their 20's just broke his leg.

Kelowna and Kootenay Look like the best trading partners. But you never Know someone else like Everett might want to upgrade.

Tiger Alumni Darren Helm Out 2-4 Weeks

Darren Helm

TRAVERSE CITY -- After experiencing the disappointment of being sent down to the minors at the start of last season, Darren Helm now must deal with a different kind of frustration.....

Helm, the speedy fourth-line center for the Detroit Red Wings, is expected to be out two to four weeks with an AC sprain in his right shoulder.

Helm, 22, was injured Monday during the second day of training camp when he tripped over Logan Pyett's stick and crashed into the boards.

Tigers Blow away the Canes 7-3!

I changed some play summaries from the initial post!

Game Summary

First Period
The tigers started out skating pretty hard in the opening minutes. However they started developing nervous hands, and it looked like they wern't quite sure of where to go, or how to play in tight proximity to each other. The tigers defense got caught pinching a few times and it led to some Hurricanes chances early. The canes managed to score on a couple favorable bounces.

1-0 Tigers
Kale Kessey put the Tigers up 1-0 after getting a partial breakaway off a turnover at the blueline and rang the puck off the far post and in past Lethbridge goalie Ville Kolppanen.

1-1 Tie
The Hurricanes would Tie the game up after an odd man break up the ice. Joey Frazer lost control of the puck at the blue line and the hurricanes stormed in on a 4-2. THe initial shot was blocked but Lethbridge jammed home the rebound.

2-1 Lethbridge
LET Fyten, (1) , 16:28
The puck squirted out to Lethbridge's Austin Fyten at the top of the faceoff circle and used Big Matt Konan as a screen. The puck floated high glove side past the surprised Ryan Holfeld.

Second Period
The tigers managed to break the game open, really coming out hard and pressuring the Canes hard for the last half of the period. Lethbridge weren't helping themselves as their defensman were making poor passes and coughing up the puck.

2-2 Tie
Cameron, (1) (Coyle, Carlson), 5:56 (PP)
Jace Coyle made a perfect pass to Bretton Cameron in the slot and he put it past a partially screened Ville Kolppanen.

3-2 Tigers
Carlson, (1) (Etem, Gal), 9:15 (SH)
The tigers were pressuring the canes in their own end shorthanded. Emerson Etem provided a perfectly timed screen while Cody Carlson flipped the puck in the net from along the boards.

4-2 Tigers
Cameron, (2) (Isherwood, Hamilton), 14:36
mark Isherwood shot the puck from the point, there was a huge rebound which came right to Cameron all alone at the side of the net.

Third Period
Tigers continued to pressure and continued to take over the game. Felt sorry for the Finnish canes goalie as he looked pretty frustrated.

5-2 Tigers
Hamilton, (1) (Gal, Coyle), 5:11
With the Hurricanes running around in their own End. Taylor Gal made a nice play and Deked the lethbridge goalie out of position. The puck went back to the point for a shot on net, and Lethbridge's goalie was too slow covering the puck, then he failed to notice Bretton Cameron scooping it behind the net and feeding it to wacey Hamilton.

Note: WHl.ca has the assists wrong Bretton Cameron and Taylor Gal should be credited with assists. I initially got it wrong to when doing the summary.

6-2 Tigers
Coyle, (1) , 9:55 (PEN/SH)
Jacey Coyle would explode out of his zone and beat everyone with a clear cut breakaway.(It helped that a Canes defender fell over) He got hooked at the end and still got a deke shot off. On the Penalty shot attempt. He made a couple head fakes and dekes, went to the far right hand side, and tucked the puck between the legs of Ville, Kolppanen

7-2 Tigers
Isherwood, (1) (Vey, King), 12:00 (PP)
Isherwood would sneak in off the point and receive a cross ice past from Linden Vey He made no mistake.

7-3 Lethbridge
Henke, (1) (Mestery, Braes), 12:27 (PP)
Curtis Valk was assessed a high sticking penalty resulting in a canes PP. Eric Mestery took a low shot from the point and Brent Henke tipped it into the far corner.

3 Stars
1. M.H - 28 Bretton Cameron
2. M.H - 7 Cody Carlson
3. M.H - 26 Emerson Etem

Thoughts

Positives I Noticed

Emerson Etem
Emerson Etem has a very unique skating stride. It looks like he is about to fall down. He has a very low center of gravity and that unique stride really masks how fast he is going. He looks like a very strong player, although his puck control may need some work.

Bretton Cameron
Throw my previous thoughts about overagers out the window. I thought Cameron looked really good, especially along the boards. He won a lot of puck battles out there. I would like to see how he does against a more experienced team.

Jace Coyle
Again he looked really good. Excellent at moving the puck, and seemed to take control when the tigers had a tough time getting out of their end.

Tristan King
He only had 1 assist tonight but he looked really good on the Powerplay.

Guys who can play better

Linden Vey. I thought he had a tough time out there. HE was trying to plow through 3 guys at once and lost the puck a lot.

Mark Isherwood. I thought he was fighting the puck, and it took him 2 periods to get back into the speed of the game.

Other random thoughts
Tanner Sohn really impressed me in the pre-season but he showed a bit of a weakness tonight. He looked good in the first period, but looked too eager the rest of the game. His aggressiveness and board play are strong points however he got caught pinching a few times, and needs improvement on making that first pass out of his end.

Wacey Hamilton
Seemed to shoot the puck when he could have set a guy up, then passed when he should have shot. He was named Captain for the 09/10 season.

Thomas Kundratek
Who was reportedly being sent to the hat has been sent to the Hartford Wolfpack.
Their is a fear that he may fly back overseas if sent to Junoir.
http://www.beyondtheblueshirts.com/2009/09/wolf-pack-training-camp-opens-saturday/

Scratches:
Dylan Busiuness
Colton Grant
Scott McKay
Boston Leier
Reid Petryk

It might be a frustrating season in Lethbridge. They could definitely use an improvement on their back-end
-------------------------------------------------------------------

If kundratek does not report it will ease the 20 yr old situation. With Grant possibly being the odd guy out. Someone mentioned on tigers roars and purrs that there were rumours from a tiger billet on how a deal was being worked on with Colton grant, however they also said they thought Ennis was still returning so I don't know how credible that rumor would be.

Home Opener Tonight!

Season opener
If you got tickets don't miss it.

"With the Tigers celebrating their 40th anniversary — they were formed in 1970 — all season long, there are some special events planned for tonight’s home opener that the team decided not to divulge before game time."
-Medicine Hat News

Lethbridge Huricanes
Lethbridge was pounded 8-1 last Night by Kootenay. Which means you can expect them to come out hard tonight. Hopefully the players aren't as nervous as past seasons.
Experiencing the "Arena" for the first time can totally throw off a players concentration.
----------------------------------
Tristan King
Tristan King who had "verbally agreed" to a contract earlier made it official on Friday.

Frisco, Tex. – The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has signed forward Tristan King and defenseman Hubert Labrie each to three-year entry-level contracts. Both players participated in the 2009 Traverse City Tournament with other Dallas prospects.

Edit: Also I'm trying out this New google/blogger Ad-sense thing. So you may see an advertisement or two. You cant fault a starving college student for trying to make a couple extra bucks?.... I also added a google search box at the top of the page

Jesse Ursic
Port Alberni minor hockey product Jesse Ursic has signed with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League.

Ursic, 16, attended the Tigers’ Alberta training camp earlier this month, but despite lasting longer than many rookies, he has been sent back to major midget for the season.

Ursic will play defence for the North Island Silvertips AAA team in Nanaimo this season.

Kundratek Sent Back Re:edited

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has assigned 15 players to Hartford (AHL).

In addition, the Rangers returned five players to their respective junior club: goaltender Scott Stajcer (Owen Sound, OHL); defenseman Tomas Kundratek (Medicine Hat, WHL); and forwards Ryan Bourque (Quebec, QMJHL), Roman Horak (Chilliwack, WHL) and Ethan Werek (Kingston, OHL).

Medicine Hat News
Has an article on everyones thoughts.

Desjardins said his staff will take their time in figuring out which overagers will stay. “They are real quality guys,” said Desjardins. “It just makes it real hard. That is something we will have to work through.”
http://www.medicinehatnews.com/content/view/135513/110/

---------------------------------------------------------
The question now remains is who goes for the tigers?
Does this mean that Grant and Cameron are now on the block?
Does Kundratek or Isherwood get put on the block?
Does Willie try to shop around for a back-up goalie? and cut/deal Holfeld to deal with kundrateks return?
They still have a bunch of 16 yr olds hanging around as well.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit:

16 Year Old Restrictions
In previous posts I kept saying their were 2-16 year olds allowed per team.
However that may be incorrect.

I did some researching and found a couple articles that said there is a 4 player limit on 16 yr olds for major junior for the 09/10 season.(However they would still be able to call up a 16 year old as well for a max of 10 games or until their parent team is eliminated).

I initially thought that there was a 2 player cap or 40 player limit across the whl, but it appears hockey Canada may have changed that. If anyone knows a definitive answer please let me know.

SO in reality they may only have to cut 1 more 16 year old.

Linden Vey Coming back to the Hat!

L.A made their first set of cuts and Linden Vey Is being Returned back to the Tigers.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2009/09/kings-nhl-hockey-.html

No official word has been given yet but I would think there is enough time for him to get settled and play in Saturday's Home opener.

The only wild-card left is Kundratek.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thomas Kundratek
Edit: Apparently the rangers played 2 games yesterday, and Kundratek was dressed during the day game which wasn't recorded at nhl.com

Here is a quote on his play from a NY ranger blogger.

"Tomas Kundratek does have an excellent shot, but right now, he is very inconsistent defensively. In the first period he blew his coverage, and it led to the Devils’ first goal. In the second period, he made an excellent play to break up a cross ice pass that would have led to a two-on-one. Then in the third period he wound up from the blueline and let his big shot rip, which unfortunately missed the net and came out of the zone leading to an opportunity the other way. Finally, on the PK, while on a four on three, Kundratek put a big hit on a Devil’s player and took himself out of the play, which created a four on two. Don’t get me wrong, I think that Kundratek will be an excellent professional defenseman two to three years down the road, but right now, he should return to junior and keep developing. Hopefully, he will see that and take the first plane back to Medicine Hat. "

The rangers are expected to make their first cuts today, could our 20 yr old situation get a bit more crowded?

Check my previous post for info On Tyler Ennis Signing with Buffalo

Tyler Ennis Signs NHL Deal + Shaw TV

Consider Ennis as a Tiger Alumni

Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have signed forward Tyler Ennis to a three-year entry level contract.

"I'm looking forward to having a good career as a Sabre."

"I think if you look at him, he’s got some characteristics that are along the Derek Roy line," Head Coach Lindy Ruff said. "He can open people up, he can make some special plays and he’s a good player in real tight spaces. Obviously size is a factor but I think he’s been able to push through at every level so you hope he can continue to push through."

Dallas Wants to Sign King

The Medicine Hat News interviewed Triston King, and he said his agent got word that the Dallas Stars want to sign him and that a contract is on its way soon.
http://www.medicinehatnews.com/content/view/134829/110/

The News also reports that Colin Mospanchuck and Trent Ouellete were the latest cuts to be made. SO theirs 5 16 yr olds left in camp.

Reiterating from the edit I made on my previous post, Linden Vey wasn't dressed for either of the L.A Kings Exhibition games they held yesterday. The Kings and coyotes split thier rosters up and faced each other in 2 separate games yesterday.

Random Tidbits

Sean Ringrose
Last Friday the Alberta Golden Bears played the Oilers rookies. Former Tiger Sean Ringrose scored the game winner with a few minutes remaining as the Golden Bears beat the Oil rookies 4-3

Tyler Ennis
I've been reading the comments flowing through HF boards about Buffalo's training camp and numerous fans have been absolutely impressed with the play of Tyler Ennis. He is centering one of their camps top lines. Here is a quote from one of the fans.

"Ennis makes something happen every time he touches the puck. He doesn't lose it."
If your interested in following some non-official comments about him from various fans check out this thread He is mentioned every now and again.

There is also an interview up about Ennis on Buffalo's website from last Wednesday
http://sabres.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp?catid=668&id=46063

I found a preliminary roster for New York's exhibition game tomorrow vs the Devils. Kundratek is not on the list.
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/rangers/

Linden Vey
All i found on him is that he wont be in the lineup when the Kings take on Phoenix in their first exhibition game, but may play in a secondary game at the staples center in L.A. A fan mentioned he is keeping his game simple in training camp and it looks like he has a bundle of energy but a little unsure of what to do with it all.

---------------------
Edit: A preliminary 2009-2010 roster is up at
http://www.whl.ca/stats/roster.php?step=&sub=&season_id=&team_id=206
they might be missing a 16 yr old on that list.

The roster I got at the exhibition game said Tanner Sohn was a '90 birthdate. However that is incorrect as the roster up at whl.ca lists his birth date as an '91.

It appears as if Ryan Holfeld has made the cut, barring future trades. As Kyle Birch has reportedly been cut.

For 20 yr olds
That leaves Mark Isherwood, I would think is a lock.
So Bretton Cameron, and Colton Grant fighting for that last 20yr old spot providing Ennis and Kundratek dont return.

-------------------------------------
Matt Keetley played in the flames first exhibition game vs the oilers. The Oilers won that game 4-1. Matt Keetley was in net for 19:24 seconds, and he let in 2 goals on 18 shots.

Linden Vey was not dressed in either of L.A's 2 exhibition games. Kundratek was not dressed in the N.Y rangers game

16 -17 yr olds First Impressions

just expanding on last nights comments.......

Well last night was my first look at the Tigers team, and I thought the 16 yr olds and 17 yr olds looked like they pack quite a bit of potential. I was more impressed with the 17 yr olds, but the 16 yr olds are making it a hard decision on who to keep.

The whl has a limit of 2 16 yr olds per team. Those 16 yr olds must play in at least 40 games, unless a significant injury occurs. I'm not sure if there is any specific 16 yr old roster deadline.

The 16 yr old group includes:
Dylan Businius
Dylan Bredo
Colin Mospanchuck
Boston Leir
Curtis Valk
Reid Petryk

Curtis Valk looked good, but he also looked like he was too easy to push around, and a little unbalanced at times. I would like to get another couple games to watch him play. HE is shifty on the ice, and he looks like he has a pretty good set of hands.

Dylan Bredo - My initial impression of him was that he was good along the boards, and a little more physically mature than the other 16's. I Need to watch him more to get a better opinion of him

Boston Leir - He initially reminded me of Brennan Bosch. Although he was fumbling for the puck, and looked like he had a set of nervous hands out there.

Reid Petryk - I liked his lateral mobility on the ice. He created some room and was patient with the puck. I keep seeing him on the scoresheet in exhibition games. Out of the 16 yr olds last night I liked him the most.

Dylan Businius - I remember one play where broncos justin dowling was able to get past him for a 2on1 chance. I would like to see him play another game or two before making any judgement on him.

This will be a really tough decision for desjardin to keep only 2. after watching one game I'm not sure on who I would keep.

17 yr olds
Emerson Etem
Scott McKay
Kale Kessey
TYler Bunz

Scott McKay- impressed me the most of the 17 yr olds. I thought he showed great mobility, very good ability to read the play, and wasn't afraid to bother the bronco players in front of the net and maintain good positioning on them. A little small, quick transition game, and i think he has a great deal of potential in him.

kale Kessey - I was under the impression that this was colin mopanchuck according to the rosters given out. I thought Kessey looked quite different compared to last season. I thought he had very good top speed, and seemed to keep accelerating mid-flight.

Emerson Etem - Was noticeable out there, winning puck battles in the first period. I thought he battled hard. Good speed.

Tyler Bunz - Was always square to the shooter when the broncos had a good chance. The first goal was a mad scramble in front, and the second goal he was beaten by a perfect shot on a 3 on 2. He looked good positionally, but there were a few quick half shot/passes at the net where he looked a little awkward.

Edit: Alan Caldwell who has been compiling roster lists of all teams, has Kyle Birch (G) gone from the list.

--------------------------

The game was a fairly even game. Their were times when both teams were sorta sloppy and playing O.K, then all of a sudden the tempo would turn up a few notches. I was pretty much concentrating on the tigers players, didn't really focus on any of the broncos play.

I thought tonight was a 16yr old showcase. The tigers are only allowed to keep 2 and they had 5 playing tonight. I'll talk more about them tomorow.

New Players I liked:
#25 Tanner Sohn - A 18 yr old newcomer threw the body around lots, one of the most physical players for the tigers on the ice. He was staying with his man and hitting everything that moved. He looked pretty comfortable out there.

#3 Scott McKay - 17 yr old defensman. The first couple shifts he showed some great mobility on the back-end. He made a couple higher risk pinches that worked out perfectly. He looks a little small out on the ice, but i thought he read the play really well, and wasn't afraid to battle in front of the tigers net. Willie likes to throw his best guys on the ice for the first shift in overtime, and he was on the ice.

#18 Kale Kessey - 17 yr old I thought this kid has a good set of wheels, and I liked the potential he showed in tonights game.

#23 Dylan Bredo - 16 yr old Wasn't afraid of going into the corners, and playing the body. He has a bigger frame and i think is more physically ready than the other 16 yr olds.

#29 Emerson Etem - 17 yr old One of the bigger players on a small team. Good set of wheels

#17 Reid Petryk - 16 yr old Showed some good offensive instincts. Notched 2 assists. I kept getting him mixed up with joey frazer for some reason.

It is gonna be a really big battle for those 2 16 yr old spots, and its a little unfair that the tigers will have to cut 4 of them.

Other Notes:
Curtis Valk looked tiny out there, but he didn't make any large mistakes. He scored in the shootout. I think with the high competition for a 16 yr old spots, he might be one of the odd guys out.

Boston Leir: TO me he looked a little nervous or was hearing footsteps. I couldn't accurately judge him because it seemed like he was having one of those games where the puck hit every bump on the ice.

John Stampohar: It was comical watching the broncos play around him in the first period. No-one wanted to go near him. He would corral the puck down low then skate out in front, and try for a shot.

Cody Carlson: had a very slow start, got burned bad in the first period, but played much better in the second and third. I don't like enough about his play, he needs to be better.

Jace Coyle: was rushing the puck all over the ice. Made the right play. looked good out there.

Zdenik Okal: I was initially disappointed in his play a bit, but then he started to crunch broncos left and right. Absolutely hammered #7 Reece Scarlet of the broncos at the end of the game.

Dylan Businius 16 yr old. I thought he played an alright game. I noticed one mistake, Justin Dowling was able to beat him and get a 2on1 chance later in the game.

Feel free to comment on your thoughts of the game. I may post something later about the 16 yr old group.

Oh yeah one more thing. I was impressed by the crowd noise tonight. There was probably 1500 people and they were booing the ref like a regular season game, and cheering ecstatically when a big hit or goal was scored.

Nhl Camps (Edited 7:39PMSat)

Mark Isherwood
The Boston bruins just released their Main Camp rosters and Mark Isherwood is not on their list. I'm assuming that means he will be headed back to Medicine Hat very shortly.

Tyler Ennis
I found Buffalo's Main Camp roster and theres no surprise that Tyler Ennis is on the list. Buffalo's GM expects to get his contract done during camp.

Thomas Kundratek
I heard good things about Thomas Kundratek. Here are a couple quotes i found

"He battled Atlanta's Evander Kane all night, matched him toe-to-toe."
-Director of Player Personnel Director Gordie Clark
http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/rangers/blue-notes-1.811976

“Two of our goals came from a defenseman – Klassen and Kundratek – and both were solid in the game on both sides of the puck. Klassen’s goal came at a key moment in the game for us, tying the score at one goal apiece, and Kundratek’s goal was a canon of a shot, one-timed from the point.”
http://rangers.lohudblogs.com/
Edit2: Thomas Kundratek is listed on the rangers Main Camp List.

I read from a rangers blog that New York wants to send Kundratek back to the hat for another year of juniors; however, there are questions that if he is sent back to the hat, Kundratek would rather go home and play overseas overseas.

link to blog here -http://hfrangersblog.com/?p=26

Linden Vey and Matt Konan
I am having a hard time finding any info on Linden Vey, or Matt Konan. I watched the third period of the kings webcast today, but didn't see Linden Vey on the ice at all.

I found gamesheets for 2 of the 3 Anaheim games, and Matt Konan wasn't dressed. I would think both players will be back shortly.

NHL main camps mostly get underway on sunday. With exhibition games following shortly afterwards.

Edit: Found the Ducks Training Camp roster and Mathew Konan's name is not listed. He should be headed back to the Hat.

Triston King
I forgot to mention him. I've heard he has made an impression from multiple sources.(bloggers, reporters, and Dallas management) Heres one of the quotes I found from the Dallas stars management.

Forward Tristan King- smooth skater
-Assistant GM Frank Provenzano
http://stars.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=497822

Edit2: Dallas Listed their preliminary main camp rosters on Wednesday, and Triston King wasn't on their list. It's possible he could be a late addition, I'm not sure if he has been sent back yet.

Brennan Bosch
One last thing I found an article on Former Tiger Captain Brennan Bosch, about his playing days in the hat and his future going to school and playing for the Saskatchewan huskies.
http://thesheaf.com/2009/09/from-cats-to-dogs/

Saying former tiger and brennan bosch in the same sentence just feels weird!

Mark Isherwood played in games for Boston, the only thing i found from him is he took a penalty in one game.

The bruins are doing a live blog of their exhibition games. You can find it here

I believe their game tomorrow will also be blogged Live, but I'm not sure what time it is.

I believe Matt Konan didn't dress for Anaheim's 2 games, I couldnt see him on the gamesheet rosters. No mention On Linden Vey from the L.A camp, although his Kings lost to phoenix 6-2 in thier first game.

Local Kid Listed by the Blades
I believe he is from Medicine hat but I'm not 100% sure. Darren Dietz was was listed by the Saskatoon Blades and re-assigned to the Medicine Hat "AAA" Tigers today. Last year he had tried out for Saskatoon, and then Calgary's rookie camp. This year Saskatoon saw enough in him to list him. He stands 6'1 195lbs and is an aggressive defensman.

Dunstall Claimed of Waivers

Everett Silvertips Vice President / General Manager Doug Soetaert announced Friday that the Silvertips have claimed forward Travis Dunstall off waivers from the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Hmm. Guess Willie could not find any takers for him.

Travis Dunstall is currently skating with the Grand Prarie storm. Grand Prairie however has 9 20 yr olds in their training camp, and he wouldn't be given a free spot based on his whl credentials.

Gives the Tigers a 1-3 preseason record. Looks like the Tigers ran into a bit of penalty trouble in the third.

Tigers Off to NHL Camps

Tigers off TO NHL Camps
The NHL rookie camps get largely underway this weekend, and early next week.

Triston King
The traverse City prospects tournament gets underway on Sunday. Triston King will play for the Dallas Stars prospects alongside notable WHL'ers such as Brandon's Scott Glennie, Kelowna's Jamie Benn, Lethbridge's Colton Sceviour, and Oil Kings Thomas Vincour. Theres an outside chance of Triston getting signed and ending up in the pro's. I'd say its highly likely he will be back.

Mark Isherwood
Mark Isherwood will be off to Boston's Camp where he will participate in a rookie tournament in Kitchener Ontario. The leafs, Sens, and penguins prospects will also participate in that tourney. There is still a possibility of him not returning if he gets signed and impresses enough at camp.

Mathew Konan
Matt Konan Will be heading to Anaheim where their rookie camp starts Saturday, Sept. 5. The ducks will play a 3 game mini-series against the San Jose Sharks Prospects. Konan will be back this year.

Linden Vey
THe L.A kings camp get underway with their first practice sessions on Sunday September 6th. The Kings will faceoff against the Phoenix Coyotes prospects for 2 games on the 9th, and 10th. Linden will be back this year.

Tyler Ennis
Buffalo's prospects hit the Ice Tuesday, September 8 at 11:00 a.m. Tyler Ennis is still not signed, which is unusually strange. If he does sign a contract consider that 100% official he wont return, as the only way he comes back is if contract talks fail.

Thomas Kundratek
The New York Rangers will also play in the Travers City prospects tournament. The rangers first game is on Sunday. Seeing Kundratek in a tiger uniform is still a decent possibility.
---

I'm a little surprised to not hear Wacey Hamilton's name being invited anywhere. Those injuries last year might have been a big factor in not getting noticed.

I will probably scour the web the next couple week looking for any info on how these guys do at their respective camps, and will keep you posted unless the massive college homework loads get in the way, haha.

Also it has been pointed out that the tigers have cut a few more players but specifics haven't been given. The tigers play 2 exhibition games this week vs P.A, and Saskatoon.

Tigers make Some Cuts part 2 + interesting reads

This is a response to the first article I posted this morning

TO me the recent article in the Medicine Hat News about Training camp cuts is a little unclear, or I just plainly misread it. If i misread it no doubt countless others have as well.

Quoting

"Notable cuts on Tuesday included Michael Forsyth, an eighth-round (175th overall) pick from the 2007 draft; Sam Dezman, an eighth-round (168th) pick from 2006; and Medicine Hat’s Dallas Jorgensen, who is expected to try out for Medicine Hat’s midget AAA team.
Fifteen-year-old draft picks Hunter Shinkaruk, Dawson MacAuley, Jayden Hart, Kyle Becker and Connor Garden also lasted through to the cut."

I quickly skimmed over the article this morning and I read the article as saying, the 15 yr olds lasted through the Tuesday's cuts. However after re-reading the article the News could have meant that the 15 yr olds lasted all the way until the Tuesday's cuts?

1 poster "bluedino" pointed this out to me after saying their are no 15yr olds left in camp.

IF that is true there are more like 10-11ish cuts to come rather the the 5-6ish cuts I mentioned in the previous post. Its still a little unclear to me.

How about more confusing News.
2 HF articles came out recently that have me wondering if the Tigers overager situation is about to get a little more complicated.

Hfboards every year come out with a list of each NHL organizations top 20 prospects. I believe these are written by hardcore knowledgeable fans, some with inside info.

Thomas Kundratek
They list Thomas Kundratek in the #12 spot in the Rangers prospect list. In the article they say he will play in the Travers City prospect's tournament then will get sent back to juniors.

Tyler Ennis

Is listed 3rd overall in Buffalo's System. What do they have to say about him?
I quote.

"Given Buffalo’s depth at offensive-minded forwards, it is likely that Ennis will spend another full season in juniors. He is closer to being NHL-ready than the vast majority of players his age (soon-to-be 20), and will rise quickly once he makes the jump to the pros. "

Scroll down the page to find the quotes on both players, rather than clicking on their name link at the top.

Thought a few fans Tiger fans would be interested in those 2 pieces, if they have not already read them.

Tigers Make some cuts

26 cuts to be exact. The only cuts mentioned by the news were Michael Forsyth, Sam Dezman, and Dallas Jorgensen, who is expected to try out for Medicine Hat’s midget AAA team.

The News reported Fifteen-year-old draft picks Hunter Shinkaruk, Dawson MacAuley, Jayden Hart, Kyle Becker and Connor Garden also lasted through. Which means Nicholas Anderson, and Riley Sheen were cut.

There are 35 players left in Camp. SO the real competition for spots begins.

The tigers don't have many more cuts to make. I would estimate about 5-6 left, not counting the 5 ineligible 15 yr olds.

The First of September

Someone on Tigers roars and purrs commented that the 15yr olds from northern Alberta were released back to their home teams, and that a few players were released from the practice group that stayed behind in Medicine Hat. No word on any specifics.

I was doing some google"ing" yesterday and found an interesting stick-handling video made by Hunter Shinkaruk on youtube. At least it looks alot like him and his name is in the video title

In the clip it looks like he is in his house, juggling a street hockey ball with a hockey stick. He looks like he has really good hand eye coordination.
If you have a minute or two to kill the video is here.
