Tigers Defeat Hurricanes 8-7 SO

What A Game!
First Period
The Tigers get some bad calls go against them early. Elgin Pearce received a feed in the slot with a shot on net and then got hit into the goalie Ty Rimmer.  Pearce would get called for Goaltender Interference.

The Tigers would kill the penalty off, but soon after Blake Penner would get called for boarding after finishing his check near the Hurricanes Bench on another questionable call.

On the Hurricanes Power-play Ty Stanton had a couple of chances to poke the puck off off Russell Maxwell's stick near the blue-line but missed both chances.  Russell Maxwell was then able to burn a flat footed Stanton to the outside. He shoved a shot low blocker side which beat Lanigan.
 1-0 Hurricanes

The Hurricanes would score again 5 minutes later shorthanded. Elgin Pearce overskated the puck in the slot, I'm not sure where the other Tigers defenceman was but it led to a Hurricanes 2-1 rush down the ice.   Jaimen Yakubowski would hold on to the puck, hesitate to get some space, then ripped a shot past Lanigan glove side.
2-0 Hurricanes

2:12 left in the 1st period some Hard Work by the Hurricanes would create a turnover in the tigers end. The puck would come out front amid a massive scramble and Jaimen Yakubowski would fire the rebound past Lanigan who was sprawled out trying to cover the puck.
3-0 Hurricanes

The tigers should seriously consider pulling lanigan here to shake it up. Lanigan is not getting much help but he is not sharp either.

2nd Period...yikes
The Tigers would break up a 2 on 1, Dylan Bredo would hustle his butt down the ice to get a step on the defender Lenny Hackman. Jake Doty fired a perfect hard pass over to Bredo who redirected it  past an outstretched Ty Rimmer. 3-1 Hurricanes

Lethbridge would get their 3 goal lead back almost immediately. The Tigers created a couple turnovers in the offensive zone, but Trevor Cox made a dumb decision to cross check a surprised defenceman from behind...

On the powerplay Joel Topping would fire a shot from the high half wall. Amid a mad scramble in front the first rebound shot would squeak past Lanigan's pad. Then Sam Mckechnie would pot in the second rebound. 4-1 Hurricanes

The Tigers Ty Stanton would take a high stick by 16 year old Tyler Wong. Wong receives a 4 minutes high sticking penalty.

On the powerplay Miles Koules fed Curtis Valk in front. Valk would take a second and make a pass over to Shinkaruk. Shinkaruk took a second to coral the puck and fired it past a diving Ty Rimmer

4-2 Hurricanes

Just after the Hurricanes killed off the rest of the penalty Elgin pearce would thread a small pass over to Shinkaruk who threaded another nice pass over to Valk who buried it Past Ty Rimmer.
 4-3 Hurricanes

2 Minutes later Kyle Becker would fire a flip shot out of his zone over everyone's head. The Tigers would scoop up the puck. Shinkaruk went to the net and Elgin Pearce passed over to Curtis Valk who one-timed it past an outstretched Ty Rimmer. 4-4 TIE

Unfortuntely the momentum would drastically change again.

Cam Lanigan would stop a point shot but was unable to cover the puck up. Jamien Yakubowski would get his 3rd goal of the game off the rebound. 5-4 Hurricanes

The Hurricanes would strike again with 1 second left in the period. Axel Blomqvist would put a harmless shot on net but Lanigan couldn't cover up the rebound and Jamien Yakubowski would poke the puck in past Lanigan for his 4th of the game. 6-4 Hurricanes

Lanigan is having trouble covering up any rebounds.....Yakubowski has scored 3 goals off of rebounds.

3rd Period

The Tigers would pull within one. Jake Doty fired a shot on net. Rimmer would save the shot then knock away the rebound, however he put the puck right on Miles Koules stick. Koules went top Shelf. 6-5 Hurricanes

Hurricanes would get their 2 goal lead back on a controversial play. Lanigan saved the initial shot but the puck squirted loose of his hold. Recognizing this he spread out as far as he could, however the puck was still open in the blue paint. Jamien Yakubowski would frantically whack away at the loose puck 3-4-5 times and would score his 5th goal of the game.
 7-5 Hurricanes

5 minutes left in the game Miles Koules would find Hunter Shinkaruk behind the net.Shinkaruk quickly wrapped the puck around beating Ty Rimmer. 7-6 Hurricanes

TIE GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME

Dylan Busenius undressed a Hurricane defenceman at the blueline, he would loose the puck trying to get past the 2nd Dman, but Elgin Pearce picked the puck up and Wristed one past Rimmer blocker side. 7-7 TIE

Overtime
Boston Leier would get a goalie interference penalty. Leier tried to jump out of the way but the Hurricanes Dman was right their guiding him into the goalie.

The Tigers would get the best chance as Kyle Becker and Dylan Bredo had a 2 on 1. Becker kept the puck but fired wide.

Shootout
The Tigers ended this one early. Lanigan stopped both Russell Maxwell and Jamien Yakubowski
Both Hunter Shinkaruk and Curtis Valk scored for the Tigers.

Not Lanigans night, considering how Langhammer played last game he must still be fired up, would put him in. Was unimpressed with how Maxwell walked around our Dman, why did he not make any attempt to push him to the outside?!?! Was a really poor play and poor effort on our Dmans part. 60 min left, enough time to turn the game around! Go tigers go!!

Think the coaching staff should have went with Langhammer tonight. He's coming off a big win I think they should have given him a chance to run with it.

Yeah it seems Lanigan had a rough night but what a gutsy win by our team!! They just don't quit and I believe this will pay off in the future.

Nice to see Koules have a big night. Hopefully a game like this can get him going in the second half.

It was good to see Koules have a big 5 point night. He had 3 points in his previous 15 games.....

I thought the last 2-3 games he has been more noticeable on the ice. Hope he keeps it up.

the blame should be on the D too

Watching the highlites of the game all but one of the Canes goals were scored off of scrambles in front of the net. Lanigan had a tough night with rebound control and our d-men have to do a much better job of clearing guys out. But as Cat Fan said, a gutsy win.

That was a greasy win, but we need those! It was very impressive to watch the "never die" attitude of the Tigers. The 2 points was important but the experience was even more important. I expect they will learn a lot from this one. Nice win boys!! Keep it up!!

If they can beat the canes, who beat Edmonton, I think we have to realize that we have potential and just need to play with confidence. The wins may be greasy but they are wins! They are in a playoff spot and deserve to be there. There is no team that the Tigers should be intimidated by!!! Go tigers go!

This team is coming together!! There are still flaws but we are seeing the benefit of our young guys getting experience!

3 shootout wins in a row...the Cardiac Kids are back!

Brutal giving up 7 goals but a win is a win and the Tigers are getting it done. As someone mentioned earlier these kinds of emotionally draining games where the Tabbies come out on top are going to pay off. Good for confidence and team building. Hope the D can settle down a bit in the second half and we can snag a playoff spot!

its blake penner not cole penner

You are right the young guys are getting experience but they need to start contributing to the offence for this team to have success going forward. The six young forwards have only 8 points amongst them with Labelle having 5 of those. That has to improve in the second half.

No Recaps Tonight vs PA

these games have been brutal to watch, nobody finishes their checks when they start losing they will dog around and our defence is by far the worst d group in the league hands down........defiantly considering giving up season tickets after 15 years id rather sit at home and watch tv then watch this type of crap hockey

TRADE FOR KANZIG

Anon 12:53 don't let the door hit you in the a** on the way out. After 10 years of real good teams this was bound to happen sooner or later as it does with every junior hockey team in the country. Kootenay and Vancouver are going through the same thing as did Calgary last year.

What great fans we have. To the anonymous poster who wants to give up his season tickets, please do! Maybe some young fans who want to go to the games and have fun will pick them up and appreciate what they have. As for saying anything about the rookies, how are they supposed to contribute to the offence when they get so little ice time? When we were down by so many goals why not use that line on the power play and see what happens? I'm not impressed with Clouston's coaching right now as I think we need to roll all 4 lines consistently so the top line doesn't get so tired. Still, they had won 3 very tough games before last night and if the goaltending had been better we may have come back again.

I have to say I am not impressed with #2 on defence. I just think we need a leader on defence and he is not it. I hate seeing that when he is in a race for the puck he lets up to avoid a hit. This turns the puck over in our end. I don't see much passion from Jim. Jensen was brutal tonight, I am not sure if he is just too slow but people keep walking around him.
Was a rough game but I actually thought in the first and most of the second we played ok. We had no defence or goaltending to help us out but we controlled the puck for a decent amount of time.
Hats off to PA, they are a great team!!! Shows the tigers that they have a lot of work to do.
Interesting Darren's comments at the end that some guys don't have the "hate to lose" mentality..... Then trade them. We want passionate players. No passion, no wins.

Looks like I picked a good game to miss...although I like watching McNeill play

Looks like Alberts floor and carpet need to donate a new red rug that one is from the 70,s

Tigers are not in the same league as PA. Our defence is young and not aggressive enough. #2 does nothing for me and I would trade him. Jensen needs work on not allowing people to walk around him and score. Our transition is slow BUT things are getting better! We need our guys such as Cox, Leier, Bredo etc to score too. We were too fancy at times and did not get a shot off when, if we had been simple, we could have. We are tho playing with more control, it is hard to compare to a team probably heading to the mem cup!
Also, Doty is invisible. I would trade him, he really does not enforce much out there. I wish he would finish a check! He should be a smashing machine out there and he is a non factor. We should have kept Kessy! Kessy at least would screen the goalie, Doty does not get in front of the net at all!!!

Id love to have the Giants system here with Don Hay or even Sutters style if you dont play a hard 60 minute finish you check kind of game you are traded or gone. Tigers have no where near that type of production and we are a lot older team, Kootney was dumb with the Eakin trade and they are paying for it now

Anonymous said...

Good to see Broadhead stirring it up they should try him with Leier line and put Cox on the 4th line! You have got to get the first punch to win!

Anonymous said...

Ever since that suspension Doty doesnt finish any of his checks his enforcing role is more of his presence nobody does anything bad to the Tigers anymore (running slashing etc) with him on the team and its nice to finally see that presence. Him and Astles are in a another level of toughness in the WHL nobody fights these guys because when they throw they are throwing to knock your lights completely out. It would be nice if we got another high pace checking forward much like Kessy, Leier doesnt try and goes through the motion of the game, you dont see him digging and forechecking trying to get under people skin, he doesnt do much at all and is much like that Kellen Tochekin just brutal and frustrating to watch. Cox just needs to shoot more and he will be fine and Bredo is probably the best two way forward in the league he is always working hard and covering pinching forward defiantly the most underrated player on the team if not in the league and Bob Ridley gives him a ton of credit.

All in all when your 4th line is consistently one of your best lines each night its time to make some big roster changes, id like to see 2 Dmen gone Bus and someone else (Staples and Stanton have played well enough they deserve bigger roles) bring up a young Dman or a physical one, and bring in a mean aggressive Dmen (that Geersten is a dream dman to watch he is 17 and is so aggressive finishes all his checks, a type of player we want but Don Hay will never give up) Id also move Leier and even Broadhead or one of those rotators for an 18 year old aggressive forechecker. I wouldnt move Doty because he is very valuable against team that would try to play that dirty type of game against Hunter and Hunter is arguably one of the best forwards in the WHL right now and his protection is a must for the Tigers to be successful. I would how ever sit him down and tell him either you start playing with a mean streak or you will be lucky to play 5 minutes a game. All in all if we got better forechecking through out the lines and got more aggressive as a team the Tigers could be in the 4th or 5th spot but if this keeps up we wont make the playoffs and next year is going to be a mess without Langian in net.

To Anon poster at 11:22 p.m. we do not have a "lot older team" than either Red Deer or Vancouver. Here are the stats: Tigers and Giants each have 10 players born in 95 and 96, Red Deer has 7; Red Deer has 10 94's, Vancouver 7, Medicine Hat 6, etc. etc.

longtimefan said...

Anon 7:21 are you seriously paying attention when you attend games. To say Boston Leier isn't trying and going through the motions is the most ridiculous thing i've ever read on this blog. He could be named the hardest working player almost every game he plays.

Anonymous said...

o the old red carpet has seen better days

Anonymous said...

Well if you want to lie to yourself longtimefan you go ahead and do that, ill just be here in reality

Anonymous said...

All the teams in the league have a couple players with hands. The rest of the players need to work hard and provide secondary scoring. Bottom line is our guys are not doing it. Cox Leier and Bredo are just not delivering. We need to give the younger players more of a chance to see what they can do.

Anonymous said...

To the guy who thinks that Boston does not try.......please don't drink and type. Makes you type stupid things!!

Anonymous said...

I would like the person who wants to give up his tickets to do so! Please advertise here where the seats are located so we all get first dibs at switching out seats to better ones. Something tells me he talks the talk but won't walk the walk!

Good things come to those who wait.......it will get better!

Anon 8:03, good post. I whole heartedly agree.

The Tigers have a good group of mobile forwards, they have a good young group of mobile young defenseman

However their team defense is really poor. I feel the coaches are lacking in understanding the defensive game and are using quick transition as a shortcut to offense, with needing their goaltending to bail them out defensively.

Anon 10:21...... You nailed it!
