Medicine Hat Tigers announce this afternoon they have traded the playing rights of 20-year-old defenceman Garrett Haar to the Portland Winterhawks.
The Tigers will receive a conditional pick in 2014 bantam draft.
Haar, who was on the Tiger’s College List,- played the last two years for Western Michigan University Broncos.
This leaves the Tigers with five returning 20-year-olds including Dylan Bredo, Jake Doty, Zach Hodder, Boston Leier and Medicine Hat native Curtis Valk
“We are very excited about the talent and character of our returning 20-year-olds,” stated Tigers’ general manager and head coach Shaun Clouston.
The Tigers will take to the ice for rookie training camp on Friday, August 22nd at the Family Leisure Centre due to The Arena currently undergoing flood damage restoration.
Main camp will begin on the afternoon of Sunday, August 25 concluding Wednesday, August 28th with the annual black and white intra-squad game
The Tigers begin their exhibition season at the Edmonton Oil Kings tournament in St. Albert on Saturday, August 31st when they play Calgary Hitmen and follow up against the Prince George Cougars the next day.

Garret Harr was on the Tigers protected List, and decided to go through the WHL route after being declared academically ineligible for the first half of next season in the NCAA, and The Tigers held his rights. I don't know what kind of conditional pick this will turn out to be.

I like this move. I really like the crop of 20 year olds that we have and not taking a risk on a guy they don't know. Well played. I would also be concerned about off ice stuff as academic failure MAY be a result of a loss of focus and committment.
I like our defence how it is, he may be good but I think we have a full roster and young talent, it is good for everyone he was traded. Nothing against him, just the troubles with having a good team and lots of talent!
I have never understood this "conditional pick". We all know he will play, he has no where else to go. He also has confirmed he is WHL bound. So why the conditional pick? And have they pre-discussed what round that pick will be?
probably conditional on how many games he plays or performance thresholds etc.
Hunter Shinkaruk signed with Vancouver.
Capgeek.com reports its for 3 years at the max value for an ELC. (925,000 + performance bonuses)
With a Signing bonus of 92,500.
I have read on TSN that it is highly unlikely that he will make the Nuks lineup, your thoughts on this?
Just Under 2 weeks to go before Training Camp Starts.
IMO Shinkaruk isn't ready yet for the NHL. He needs to develop better overall defensive skills, and learn a couple more tricks to beat defenders off the rush.
He will probably play a couple exhibition games, and might not be here at the home opener, but I'm pretty confident he will be back for this season.
I would be shocked if Shinkaruk stays with the Canucks. Might not be back to start the season but he will be back.
I agree with you Tiger Turf. If Etem played an extra year Hunter will as well. Hunter is no where near Etem and so it seems unlikely he will play for Van. I would think that Hunter could use 2 more years in the Dub, but likely will find himself in the AHL. I have always been a fan of keeping kids in the Dub until 20, there are so few that are ready to play me. Guys like Etem are the exception. Hunter is no where near as strong, as dominant on the ice or as defensive as Etem was....he has a lot of work ahead of him. This is not slogging Hunter, he is a brilliant player, just needs time to develop and I hope Van gives him that! We have seen from guys like Bunz what too early of a call up to the pros does to you. I hate seeing guys having to dig themselves out of a hole. Bunz needed another year as well!
Shinkaruk was not a game changer last year. He did well, but Etem was a game changer the previous year. Until Shinkaruk looks like that I think he needs more time. Also horrible on defence.noAiesh129
Tigers have a goalie camp that starts this week. I think they are bringing in guys who are trying for the back up position.
Just read on twitter that their is a player with a twitter handle Wenghis Khan_17 from Michigan who has commited to the Tigers. Not sure if thats his real name or not, I can't find any hockey stats for a Wenghis Khan.
Why are the Tigers suddenly getting all these college guys?!?! Oh well, here is hoping he is good! Always nice to have too much talent!
I thought Michigan was an area draftable to the OHL, not us. How does that work?
I hope he is not a 20 year old! Otherwise I think he can plan on a trade.
Nice play on Ginghis Khan. Well, we know he has a sense of humor.
I believe if players are free agents/clear waivers they are free to go to other leagues.
