Tigers Trade Duncan McGovern + Fischer Deal

Duncan McGovern
The Medicine Hat Tigers announced on Monday that they have traded 2000 born goaltender Duncan McGovern to the Kootenay ICE in exchange for a 5th round selection in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.

Thoughts
McGovern was likely a victim of coming through at the wrong time; however, the Tigers have been very poor at developing their own goalies. It is one of the positions they continually struggle with.

Bullion, Schneider, Shields, Lotz, Langhammer, Wapple, Lanigan. are all examples of players coming from other teams. (Langhamer was an NHL drafted goaltender before being picked in the Import draft, so that doesn't really count)

Tyler Bunz who was drafted under Willie Desjardins rule and his last season in 2011-2012 was the last Tiger Goaltender that was drafted or recruited as a Tiger and made it to the starters role.

This move is basically a sign that Bullion is here to stay for this season. Crazy to think that at one point he was likely a day or two away from being released before the Fischer incident happened.

Kootenay Ice
They have a 19yr old and an 18yr old who have put up some mediocre numbers so far this season. In the off-season they acquired Everett's Backup Overage Goaltender. He didn't work out so they picked up Kurtis Chapman from Regina, and Bailey Brkin from swift for conditional 6th round picks.

Zach Fischer Fischer Deal
The Spokane Chiefs made a splash on the trade front Thursday, acquiring Calgary Flames prospect Zach Fischer from the Medicine Hat Tigers in a multi-player trade.
Headed to the Tigers are a trio of assets, including 18-year-old right wing Hayden Ostir and 16-year-old defensive prospect Eric Van Impe. The Tigers also received a second-round pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft to complete the trade.

A 2nd Round pick in 2019
Might be a mid round to later round pick

18yr old year old Hayden Ostir
Have to wait and see him play, but if we look at the average whl forward and how they progress, he is on pace for a 35-45 point season if he plays all 72 games in his 18 year old year. The Tigers may be able to bump that up, but lets see what he is capable of first. It looks like his level of improvement from 16 to 17 was quite high, so hopefully he can be a near point per game player at 19&20.

16yr old Defenceman Eric Van Impe
He was a 2nd round bantam pick and putting up great numbers in Midget AAA. Potential core player for the future. The Tigers defensive group has a lot of young 16-17 yr old depth now with (Clayton,Longo,Craven,Baker, and now Eric Van Impe)

Spokane
I don't follow Spokane much, but this was Spokane dumping assets.  They had extra players on their roster with an exceptionally strong 17yr old age class. They were looking for a veteran player to help provide experience to their younger up and coming group of players.

With the addition of Fischer, and IF Kailer Yamamoto comes back from the Oilers, Spokane will have a much better balanced team with a lot of youth; however, their goal-tending is still very young.

With this deal spokane had to release a 20 year old, so this was an acquire 1, and give up 4 type deal for them. They gave up a lot for someone who will not help them when their 17yr old age class matures.

I don't follow them close enough to make a good opinion, but giving up that many assets for a 1 year rental player with a younger roster is something I'm not fond of, but then again sometimes too much depth creates issues like what the Tigers have seen with players wanting out.

Overall Returns
The returns on Fischer are pretty impressive.  It sounds like their were multiple teams in on the Fischer sweepstakes, which may have gone in the Tigers favor. They followed their usual strategy of balance. A little bit for this year and assets for the future.

I'm going to do a review on the Tigers Organization the last few years. I'm just compiling some stats and it will be a bigger piece.

Awful game last night. Ostir looked all right, but still learning the systems. Despite all the naysayers here, White was one of the better Tigers! Nice feed to Rassell on his goal. Still far to loosey goosey in front of the net. Hollett was left defenseless on many occasions and a bit of bad luck on the bounces and the score quickly added up.

Fischer isn't here because of Clouston and White but whatever I guess as Fischer is 100x times better than White.

So why are we keeping a 20 year old goalie ? So we can have a nineteen goalie next season he has no confidence in and a rookie backup. A goalie he was so confident in he traded a player and 3 draft picks for. Clouston is a clown !

Think the writing was on the wall for McGovern last year that the coaching staff didn't have confidence that he could do the job. Wish him the best of luck in Kootenay.

It always seems that when a team has a laugher one night like the Kootenay game that they are overconfident and play like crap the next game.

Last night was the only game I missed this season. I watched bits and pieces on the highlights and from what I saw their were multiple times players had poor positioning and caught out of position.

I think it is natural to start cheating towards offense after a big win.

Pink laces night Friday oooh my cant wait ;(

How did Joel Craven look tonight? WHL scout was telling me glowing things about him in August.

I didn't notice him until late. Big body, moves really well, didn't get a ton of icetime but did not look out of place for 11 games into the season. That goal he scored was a shot that was deflected by a rebel and into the net.

Ostir - After 2 games I see a lot of comparisons to mason shaw. Quick hands, intelligent player, hustles hard. Clouston received exceptional value for Fischer

Fischer scored a goal and had 14 PM's in his debut with spokane. Spokane plays the Tigers Wednesday, so I Imagine that will be interesting to watch.

Zach Fischer gave a $5000 donation to KidSport in Medicine Hat. Pretty solid move on his part. Wish him all the best in Spokane

If Ostir continues his impressive start with the Tigers, being an 18 year old, we will soon be asking "Zach who?". I know it's early, but I would have traded straight across by what I see so far!

I agree The Tigers got incredible returns for Fischer.

Even though Fischer is a great player. The Tigers received more production in terms of points, as well as a high pick and prospect.

I think the 35-45 point projection on Ostir might be lowballing. After watching him play and seeing how the Tigers utilize him, he may be capable of 50ish points, and a point per game player next season.

My post is 90% done, includes a ton of information. I have a little section on the future, and it is making me incredibly excited for whats to come in the next few years.

I agree for what the team will be in 2 - 3 years...Current roster players being projected to 18-20 year olds looks outstanding and the drafted players yet to arrive. I sure would like the coaching staff to put a younger player with a veteran line more often. Clouston has a tendancy to ride his veteran players on the top lines and even though they develop long term chemistry it bites them in the ass come playoffs as teams adjust and set up a game plan for the lines

How have they not pulled Bullion after 4? His head isn't in the game.

Coaches pet

Why are they letting Bullion embarrass himself? Are the shots right on the website?

Coaches pet is right. Why we have an overage who is a back up goalie at best makes no sense

Moose jaw has very good depth, very similar to what the Tigers had last season. Small mistakes that you could get away with from mediocre teams, MJ will make you pay.

Bullion's head wasn't in the game and it was obvious. He knows it. Hopefully it was just an off night, and not something else. A game like that where you leave someone hang to dry makes me nervous.

Post is done, putting it up tomorrow. I assume their may be a few negative comments after that loss tonight, so letting that vent through...

Waste of a overage spot on a goalie when your team is not a contender.

Anonymous said...

A coaches pet wouldn't have been left in for 9 goals. While he wasn't very good the team in front of him hung him out to dry all night. Three goals guys left all alone in front, two more the third forward went to the net untouched and had an easy tap in.

Keeping an overage goalie any time he isn't a starter is really stupid.

A clown move

How many 16 yr olds who must play 40 games could one team possibly need ? 3 and counting I guess

I agree that Bullion did not play well...however, there was another player on the ice for all of the first three goals - which arguably were the only three that mattered. That player was the star dman - Quenneville. If memory serves, he gave up the puck in his own end and third goal was scored directly as a result of how he tried to skate the puck out of his end. Bad move for a slow skater against a fast team. I found his reaction after Bullion mis-read the penalty call and goal scored. Given his poor play to that point, skating around holding his head "in shock" at what happened was silly. Way to support you goal tender Quennie!

Yes Bullion had a crap game....I think Clouston was punishing him by leaving him in but the team as a whole did not support him and left him exposed too many times. A team like MJ demands 110% play from every player on the Tigers to have a respectable game....and that didn't happen.

Oh great we got 2 kids who sat for last 4-5 games on a line against another top team
