Tigers Make A Big Move

Their was a 3 way trade involving Saskatoon, Medicine Hat, and Regina.

To Medicine Hat
’00 Bryan Lockner
1st Round Pick 2020 WHL Bantam Draft
2nd Round Pick 2021 WHL Bantam Draft

To Saskatoon
’98 Max Gerlach
 http://tigershockey.com/article/tigers-acquire-lockner-and-picks

Scouting Report
He is a 2 way player responsible in both ends of the ice. Good on ice awareness. Defensibly responsible. Hard work ethic. His passing skills threading pucks through tight situations seems high.
Average Skating, turning a little slow. Stands up for teammates and not afraid to get into the dirty areas. Pats were using him on the 3rd line, with PP time standing in front of the net.

Bryan Lockner(17)(.21/.31) 6'1 209lbs.

Lockner's Highlight Reel

Initial Thoughts
The Tigers have significantly bolstered their 2000 age class. Their 2000 and 2001 age groups have the makings to be exceptionally strong when they mature in 2 seasons.

They acquired Two 17's who will be impact players, so even though they lost a good piece with Gerlach, these deals will probably make this years team stronger, and the deals are also geared for the future. They also aquired a 1st and 2nd rounder. Those returns for Gerlach are massive.

Have to give them credit, they actually moved a 19 year old for some youth!!!!!!!
In SHOCK lol

Anonymous said...

Steele no longer listed on the roster. I assume we released him and will probably go play junior A.

Anonymous said...

I like all the moves. I think we will stay a good team, especially when Olstir and Shaw come back and then better for the future. Gotta give Clouston credit on this one.

Anonymous said...

Wonder what the asking price was for Rassell

Anonymous said...

Love the trades this year. I think it does not compromise this year much and completely strengthens down the road.

Anonymous said...

I whole heartedly agree with 2:46 and 3:41. The goal was to set this team up for two years from now, they've strengthened the 2000 age group with the two moves they made which was a weak spot.

Was going to post after the last game before Christmas about Gerlach but never got around to it. In watching that Edmonton game he scored once and had an assist on another goal but after each he never joined the scrum with his teammates to celebrate. To me that was an alarm bell that he wasn't happy here and today's trade was maybe an indication that I may have been right. It's probably a good deal for both teams, Saskatoon will most likely get him back for his overage year and the Tigers get a guy with a great upside in Lockner along with recouping the second they traded to Seattle and a first.

Anonymous said...

Will be strange, Gerlach will take his bag to the home team dressing room tonight and play against the tigers right away. Gotta think that would be pretty odd

Anonymous said...

Wonder if we will see both guys in the line up tonight

Anonymous said...

He signed with the Calgary Canucks.

Anonymous said...

Who is signed with the Calgary Canucks????

TigerTurf said...

I just looked it up. Jaxon Steele

Anonymous said...

It's about d@mn time we got some size in Lochner would have preferred getting more size in that trade with Seattle as the Birds have alot of size surely Clouston could have done better than 5'9" Brown. We have enough small guys who don't go into the tough areas on a regular basis!!!

Anonymous said...

Apparently Brown has no issue with the tough areas. That is mentioned in many scouting reports. And he has done that in the first period. So far impressed

Anonymous said...

Strong game from everyone. Quen looked really good (I know I will hear from haters on this comment). Like the new guys as well. I thought it was the best game we have played in a few. Hope they keep it up.

Anonymous said...

Agree, Quen had 1 goal 1 assist, +2 and 10 shots on goal (wow)

Anonymous said...

did we all see the hugs & giggles with DQ/Gerlach end of game?

TigerTurf said...

That must have been so weird. Teammates for 2.5 years and they probably rode the bus up together, then hours later they all played against him.
----

I really, really liked the play of young Joel Craven, he looks like he has the tools to step into the 2nd line pairing next season. Hollett continues to Impress.
-----
The Tigers gave a lot of ice-time to all 4 lines. Lockner looks big and sturdy, and hopefully be the one to cram in the garbage goals. He almost had 2 goals tonight.
----
Brown didn't notice him as much, need another game to view. He did make a nice play with his first shift of the game to give Haden an empty net to shoot at.

The Tigers had a lot of energy tonight.
---------------

Regina just lost to Edmonton after acquiring all that star power, but the Tigers get to test them out Friday.

Anonymous said...

I would expect Brown to take a few games to get his legs back. Has not played in the league since Oct and I think it is likely too early to judge. Although nice to see him get an assist!

longtimefan said...

I like Hollet as well......but.....his rebound control needs a lot of work. He leaves way to many pucks in dangerous areas which puts a lot of stress on the defence. Those second and third chances usually end up in your net.

Ty Schultz has returned to canada and has been skating in Surrey.
The Surrey Eagles in the BCHL recently acquired his rights in a trade made today.

Tigers deserved better in the Regina game.

TigerTurf said...

They played very well. Regina came out pretty hard for the first few minutes, but after that, I thought the Tigers were the better team for the majority of the game. A possible first-round opponent in the playoffs. It could have been a playoff preview.
-------
Big game against Brandon Saturday.

Anonymous said...

Massive point out of MJ. Tigers were in that game, could have gone either way. Nice when you can stand toe to toe with one of the best in the CHL. They have to keep playing that way!

Anonymous said...

Strangely McGovern excelling in Koot. Good for him! Stats are better then our 2 goalies.

Anonymous said...

I just do not see how we will be able to compete against any of the eastern teams that could place in the wildcard. We would be lucky to play Brandon but help me god if we play Regina we are in trouble. I know we beat Saskatoon a couple of years ago but our team was so so so much deeper then this years.

Anonymous said...

not really strange based on his preseason numbers.obviously had a good summer and wasnt given an opportunity

Anonymous said...

I would disagree, in the opportunity he had with the Tigers I would not have kept him - he got to play and was not convincing each time. I am not sure about his summer, I think all guys train pretty hard, so not sure how or where that comes into it or why it was different then any other summer. But I agree with Anon 5:48, good on him.

Anonymous said...

It will be a tougher then normal first round, that is for sure! Tigers could very easily have a quick exit from playoffs. In the same breath, so could Regina if they don't get moving a bit more. SC and MJ are so so so strong. Will be exciting and interesting! Pulling for a small market team like the tigers to take the MC - MJ or SC!

Anonymous said...

anon 10:16, his summer must have been good for him to have improved so much from last year, was my point.I think he could've had the same success with the tigers based on his preseason numbers if he had have been given a few starts. Overall though I don't think it matters that much, he likely would have been moved out to create room for Bjorklund at the end of this season anyways.

Anonymous said...

Bjorklund will sit on the end of the bench like all other young goalies do under the Clouston regime. Then when it's his time at 18 he will be expected to be a stud, won't happen so let's trade for a 20 and get rid of him too. The trend continues every year, getting a little tired of the whole show in the net.

Anonymous said...

Hollets last goal in the Koot game was as soft as they come. Rough losing the game on a soft one with 5 seconds left.

Anonymous said...

Brutal last goal. Was so disappointing to watch.

Anonymous said...

Wonder if we can trade for McGovern

Anonymous said...

Bruuuuuutal finish, just brutal. You could see the deflation in the players on the ice. I would want to run and hide if I had let that in. Holletts numbers were nothing close to McGovern's. Save percentage was not good tonight. He is better then this and learn and more on.

Anonymous said...

McGovern had a bad start, but gave his team a chance to win when they needed him to. This guy is gonna be a stud, but not good enough to develop here where we'd rather have a 20 year old back up. Clueless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TigerTurf said...

Tigers always use goal-tending as a crutch to their below average defensive awareness.
The last goal was a prime example, there were a bunch of minor mistakes that aren't obvious to most.

1) The Tigers had a line change and the forwards were slow to get into the play
2) The defenceman was playing very far back although he just came on the ice for a change and can't be faulted

1) and 2) go together.

When the oppositions forwards aren't slowed down in the nuetral zone it forces the defenceman to play much further back in his zone to control the incoming forwards speed and preventing breakaways
(Team Defence 101)

When the defenceman backs up he gives up the blueline(which causes more offensive carry-ins which lead to more goals over dumping the puck in) hockey analytics 101..

(This is the Tigers system in a nutshell, Saying they rely on quick transition is kinda false, their game is and has always been about trying to catch the opponent napping so they can carry the puck into the zone)

In this case....

Because of a slow change, and quick Kootenay transition... It allowed Kootenay to come up the ice with speed, which ultimately forced the Tigers defenceman back. (Although in this case he was too far back because of the line change.)

Despite a relative 2 on 4 It allowed Kootenay a shot from the high slot.

Most often goals are the result of a combination of mistakes, this is no different.
Now yes Hollett should have saved that shot, but if we look at the mechanics of how the play developed....their poor line-change and positioning caused a shot from the high slot in the first place...
----
Hopefully they learn from it, and don't blame the goaltender.

However I noticed Kootenay keying in on Hollett between his body and glove, so perhaps that is an area he can improve upon.

TigerTurf said...

In the CHL you win with older players. Their is a reason why the Tigers haven't developed a goaltender since Tyler Bunz.

This isn't a Tigers problem though, it's a CHL problem. The simple fact is that depth 18yr olds who've been on the bench, are better than 80% of 1st year players in the league. Unless the player is in the top 20% of all players, he will see reduced ice-time on a 4th line role.

It's why the Gary Haden's, Jaxon Steele's, Ryan Jevne's, Curtis Valks, get no icetime, until their older. The simple reason that most 18yr old former depth players are better than 1st year players.
------

With goalies however they need game time development. The Tigers have shortcut this, by acquiring veterans that have developed through other teams, avoiding that development time and earning more wins.
-------------
If wins are your goal, it's rather an ingenious move to shortcut the development aspect and squeeze out more wins with veterans. To me it does seem a bit of a shortcut for long-term success, at the expense of the player, but this is relatively how the CHL works.

So I think unless rules changes are made, it's hard to fault a coach for trying to maximize wins.

Anonymous said...

Still a save that should have been made by the goalie. Yes bad change, yes lazy play but that should be a save made 100% of the time.

Anonymous said...

How 'bout Mark Rassell getting undressed by a defenceman for the first goal?

Anonymous said...

How about rassell's 38 goals in 46 games.

longtimefan said...

So anon 10:52, in your view because Rassell has scored a bunch of goals he gets a pass on the defensive side of the game. His +\- of -4 with his numbers along with a number if his teammates would indicate the team in front of the goaltenders are leaving them out to dry in a lot of instances.

Anonymous said...

I understand he got beat and yes the goalies often get hung out to dry but it just bothers me when people only say negative stuff. It's not often that people praise a player. More often than not people end up complaining about one players mistakes. Was rassell to blame there, yes. Was holletts last goal a bad one, yes. Maybe if the whole team wouldn't have took there foot off the gas they might have won and we would not be having this conversation.

Anonymous said...

Rassell is a beauty and this team is nowhere near as good without him

TigerTurf said...

I've long learned people are more likely to comment on something they disagree with.
----------
We all know that Rassell is better on the team than not on the team. That isn't a discussion or talking point, or anything worth talking about.

But longtimefan brings up a good point.

Rassell was also the guy lazily skating into the play at the end of the game. Defence is one thing he knows he needs to work on. He isn't often that 3rd guy defending the blueline, usually, he is the forward rushing back into play.

My intent above was just trying to point out that blaming the goaltender for the loss, despite the weak goal, I feel is the wrong frame of mind to be in if you're looking for improvement.

Anonymous said...

Like I said before rassell got beat clean. I don't think that should be our concern. Forwards constantly get beat when they are covering on d. Is it something he could get better at, for sure. What we should be more concerned about is our defensemen getting beat that badly. I know I said I don't like ripping players but a perfect example is nassen. The amount of times that he has been beat 1 on 1 because he got caught puck watching is absolutely ridiculous(when he was healthy). Same thing with gally. As big as he is he should rarely get beat but it happens all the time. If we are going to break apart a player lets do it tosomeone who plays the position and should be better not a guy who was put in a tough situation in a position he is not used to.

TigerTurf said...

I agree with most of your comments. I had a post written up but realize it's just contributing to the negative thing about the players we both don't want the conversation to lead too, so I'll skip that part..

If I'm getting your point right it's that improving your mediocre defenceman will have a bigger impact than improving the elite forwards rarely used defensive game..

Probably true. I just don't agree with giving the elite forward a pass, when the goaltender was getting hate.

longtimefan said...

I wasn't taking a shot at Rassell, he's had a terrific year so far, I was just pointing out that defence isn't just two guys and a goalie it's a five man unit in front of the goaltender that needs to be responsible. To many times this year ive seen the three forwards get caught around the goal line and the puck gets turned over causing an odd man rush going the other way. Shouldn't happen at any time but it for sure shouldn't happen in the third with the game on the line which I've seen lots of times this year. Just one instance of puck management errors I see that needs to be cleaned up in my view.

Anonymous said...

I do agree with mostly everything your both saying. Forwards need to be better defensively as does everyone else. Like I said though when a random guy comes on here and takes a shot at a player and doesn't have a follow up that kind of makes me mad. I also was not tying to start anything with you longtimefan or tiger turf as I both respect your opinions more than most people on here.

Last night I thought the team did not really want to play. We looked not really into it. I still think this team does not want to play for Clouston.

Anonymous said...

I think you're right they don't want to play for him .I can't see them holding on to first place and will be luck to win a playoff series...time for the owners to wakeup and get rid of clouston. The team needs a new vision behind the bench and a GM and coach

It is too bad, I long to see a Mem Cup run. How good was the Russell/Dorset years and making it to the finals. Brought so much to the city. Everyone was a tiger fan that year. Sad it is not likely we will see that for a long time.

longtimefan said...

Actually anon 10:20 I believe this team is set up to make a run in two years. Reading the comments I'm not sure what people expected out of this season after the loss of a lot of key players gone from last year. Losing Mason Shaw was a huge blow but even with him this years team was not going to be in a position to challenge. Add in the request to be moved from Zach Fisher and the outlook for this season changed dramatically.

As I said I think this team will be very good in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons. Forward group right now is an average age of 17.6 years. Williams, Rybinski, Anderson, Lockner and Brown along with Joel Craven, Eric van Impe, Daniel baker and Cole Clayton are very good building blocks moving forward. Just my view but I think there is a bright future ahead.

Another game that it looked like no one wanted to play. No jump in anyone. Terrible loss to the bottom feeder team.

CatFan said...

What I don't understand is why play Bullion so much? What is the point in playing a 20 year old goaltender at this point when we are obviously rebuilding? Is Hollett hurt? Why play Bullion 2 games in a row? If we are looking to contend in a few years then bite the bullet and play your young players more consistently and put Hollett in net for the majority of the rest of the games. He has some work to do in net but he can't do it from the bench and I still think is style is superior to Bullion's.

Anonymous said...

If they finished 1st they play Regina or Brandon in round 1 and loose. Better to fall back and face Kootenay or Lethbridge. Clouston is smart to put them on a losing streak.

longtimefan said...

Caftan I 100% agree. It's almost like Hollet is being punished for letting in the weak goal against Kootenay. He's the guy next year so I agree with you, he should be playing the majority of the games from here on in.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't give any coach credit for putting his team on a losing streak and if that's the case then his job should be taken away from him.
They are losing now because they don't have the high end players (they've had in the past) that can put up numbers and high minutes of ice time. The so called top 2 lines now are average in the league and are unable to produce like the past. Also, they are now finding out that the other teams in their division which have all chosen to go young, have young players that are just as talented as theirs and therefore, not going to be as easy as everybody thinks playing in their own division down the stretch. Now is when you question coaching, structure and systems which haven't changed at all since Clouston took over.
Don't matter who they get in the first round it's going to be tough and if you're losing games on purpose to get a different opponent, then karma will bite you in the rear.

TigerTurf said...

Ryan McCracken is reporting that Mason Shaw was cleared to start skating.

I just read a sports article on Reconstructive ACl tears and skating.
After 4 months they allow the athlete light skating (no crossovers twists/turns) ( It has been about 4 months since his surgery)

At 6 months they will evaluate the athlete for agility/balance/and overall strength, and if he passes them, they will allow full on ice activities. 6 months is usually the absolute minimum to reduce risk of re-injury.
------

I don't know Shaw's timetable, but 6 months from now coincides with the start of the playoffs.
7 months is a few games into round 3.

Geez, this team can not put it together. At all. It is just unreal. It does not matter, they can not close out a game. They only excel in the area of blowing leads and sh$tting the bed.

Anonymous said...

I can barely watch anymore. Honestly, I do not find it fun. I dont think they want to play for the coach. I find the style of play old fashioned and that the team is not progressing. I dont care if they lose rebuilding, I dont care if young goalies let in some soft ones - that is part of growing as a team. But this team does not grow. It does not change. Teams around them do. This team is status quo. And for the love of hockey, why do we have a 20 year old back up??????? Would have loved to have seen a 20 year old solid defenceman

Anonymous said...

What is Ostir's injury?

Anonymous said...

Starts with the coach and gm and his vision for the team. I think it's time for a change of style and team structure .,but won't happen when coach and gm are the same person. Owners are just happy to make the playoffs every year. Under this coach/ gm it's about winning as many games as you can before Xmas break the rest of the league catches up and grinds your small team down in the second half. But owners are happy to make the playoffs same thing every year ... never changes just play a round or two and they are happy

Anonymous said...

Look at the teams that are successful and vastly improving ie PA and Cranbrook all have ex NHL players with coaching experience and only coach . Gm is not also the coach!

Anonymous said...

I’ve been a casual fan for a few years and stumbled on this blog only recently and I can’t quite understand where the negativity and calls for change come from - hopefully a few of the more recent commenters can clear a few things up for me!

10:47 (Jan 26) - What about their style is old fashioned? What makes you think they don’t want to play for the coach anymore? Most games I’ve seen are really fast and the kids try really hard (usually). What am I missing?

11:46 (Jan 27) - Similar questions about what kind of style and team structure you think are missing? Also, I find it hard to believe that the owners are happy to lose in the first round or two - I’m sure they’d love to win a championship every year but only ONE team gets to so most teams end up disappointed. Wouldn’t it be concerning if the owners were happy to miss the playoffs?

12:02 (Jan 27) - I did a little research for this one because I was really confused. Since the 2011-12 season, PA and Cranbrook have won a combined ONE playoff series and have missed a playoffs a combined five times - I would hope they’re improving because they’ve been quite bad for a while. The Tigers have won 6 series in that time span and only missed a single playoff round. Are these really teams you wish the Tigers looked at and said ‘I sure wish we could be like them’?

So what exactly am I missing?

Anonymous said...

Style of play and team size,.

longtimefan said...

Good post anon 1:07 I was confused with the PA, Cranbrook comment as well. Kootenay for sure had no where to go but up, they were abysmal the last two seasons. As far as having former NHL coaches I'll throw another one out there, Brent Sutter sure has the Rebels in prime position to challenge for last overall.

longtimefan said...

Anon 1:51, Style of play? You would like them to be more defensive minded? Style they play is pretty wide open, they've been in the top 8 in league scoring 4 of the last 5 years.

TigerTurf said...

I want to play devil's advocate a little for those comments above.

Group A) The Tigers have had success in the regular season, and first couple playoff rounds and more wins on the average than most whl teams.

Group B) They Tigers haven't produced a whl Finals appearance in 10 seasons with the current formula, despite having 4 "up seasons" (Clouston has been coach for 7 of those 10 seasons)

Which side is right? Neither, but neither side is wrong. We could debate this to the moon, but it probably won't change either sides opinion.
---------

Sometimes comments don't necessarily translate well, and sometimes come off as I'll-advised, but I feel the Group B direction is where those comments are headed towards.

I switch between group A and B myself. I feel Clouston gets too much hate, as he knows how things work pretty well, but I also feel that this being his 8th year and no WHL finals appearances does nothing to make the group B part of me quiet. I feel they have underperformed per talent level for 3 straight years.

This season they get a buye with unexpected pre-season occurrences and the ridiculous power of the East.
---

I hope that in 2 years they ice a great team, and Clouston gets a pro chance in the AHL. Bobby fox takes over, and everyone is happy.

Anonymous said...

I couldn't agree more whl championships and league final appearances speak volumes... being content to make the playoffs and maybe to the second round is terrible. When they Tigers were a powerhouse under farewell and Willie's good years they never settled

Old fashioned I could see in the way of the structure of our team - we have tiny players, that changed a long time ago, the tigers never changed. We dont have power forwards, we have small slick guys. That is a system of the past. All NHL teams and frankly all other teams in the WHL have size. We dont. You cant win like that anymore. You at least need a mix.

Hits like the one Barrett Sheen did should be given long suspensions. That is not acceptable. Lack of class and respect.

TigerTurf said...

Tigers can thank Sheen for the win. Hopefully Craven is alright, but I wouldn't doubt he has a concussion after that WWE flying elbow. More than likely a 5+ game suspension on that one.

Didn't like that Hollett was run over soon after. Tigers miss that Fischer type presence on the team.

Nonetheless good win. That's gotta get the confidence flowing

The boys played very well. Hopefully, they can keep that up, 3 of 4 points from MJ last 2 games.

Players are considered character players by winning championships and therefore are usually the ones highly touted in the drafts or trades at the deadline. So, in the Clouston era he has accomplished the most wins in franchise history and good for him it's an accomplishment for HIS resume I guess. But, he has not won one single WHL championship or even got to a league final.

Maybe this is why most people feel he's not getting the job done and I would totally agree if that is so. When you are a winner (not regular season games only), the next level will want you in their organization because you are considered a winner and that's why he's still here year after year.

Only ONE pennant has been raised to the rafters under this regime and it was for a division title (still an accomplishment none the less), but if you're rated on winning championships, then I give Clouston a minus rating.

All you ever hear is in 2 years they should challenge for the league championship. Been hearing this long enough, not happening under this coach and he's had some pretty loaded teams that have been bounced way to early in the playoffs. Time for a change!!!

Hockey is different now from when I played , ‘85’ lol - after craven hit ‘my’ Kamloops Blazers of 85 would have had a bench brawl - never mind the goalie int. Rite after . Nobody tough enough anymore ? Maybe coach has team under control ? To counter what I just said they won because of not losing control- hats off to coach and players - hockey has changed

Anonymous said...

It goes beyond not winning a championship or appearing in a final. In just about every year I've attended playoff games, there has never been any doubt that the Tigers had no chance of doing anything but winning one series against a below average team. I'm too lazy to check the playoff archives and back this up. However, it has happened numerous times. Even in series' where most of the games were close, there just never seems to have been a doubt who was going to win, and it wasn't the guys in orange and black. The one factor that has reared its head over and over again in the playoffs is that the team is too small. Winning games in November and winning in March and April are very different. And I've seen it over and over and over again. Once it gets late into the season and into the playoffs, the team is getting pushed off pucks, not winning battles and not scoring in the tough areas. The thing that drives me nuts is Clouston refuses to change. Again this year, we are likely the smallest team in the league with about 12 players 5'10 and under and once again as we get near the end of the season, the wins seem to by drying up.

Anonymous said...

You nailed it!

CatFan said...

We have 25 players on the roster: 17 are 5'11 or more, 2 are 5'10 and only 6 are smaller. Your point again??

Anonymous said...

That never happened when Fischer was there

Anonymous said...

Do go to the games? we are always one of if not the smallest teams in the league under this current coaching staff and fall off in the second half of the season just when the season ends. The playoffs are very trying on smaller players when you may play 5 times in 7 days

Anonymous said...

Barrett Sheen gets 5 games under supplemental discipline for the cheap shot on Craven.

longtimefan said...

Anon 1:15pm just to debunk your theory of "falling off in the second half" going back to the 2010-2011 season the Tigers have a record of 150 wins and 102 losses. The worst they were in the second half was in 2015-2016 when they were 18-18 and lost in the tie breaker game to miss the playoffs.

Anonymous said...

I’m surprised it wasn’t more. Would have been 25 in the OHL.

Yes, that's true, but only if necessary. Most teams are trying to change to as many off day trips as possible now. For instance, Lethbridge would've left at 7am on the Monday. Just saying! Sleep in your own bed or sleep on the bus going through the mountains????

Only after they play do they travel at night

Yes exactly, leaving after a game only makes sense, but when you have 2 days off before an extended trip it makes no sense to be driving at night for both the team and the DRIVER!!!
