Raiders Defeat Tigers 5-2
I thought the Tigers only played 20 minutes of hockey. They have been coming out of the gate very quickly. I think that is 3 games in a row where they have scored a goal within the first 5 minutes.
They played a terrific first period but then coasted the rest of the way through. They let the opposition score another 4 goals in the third period.( 2 empty net goals)
It's disappointing because that's 4 points thrown away in a close race, and It's not the time of year to start having effort problems in the third period. Their only 4 points away from missing the playoffs and if they lose tomorrow it's very likely that turns into 2....well 3 but Kootenay would have 2 games in hand.
Jayden Hart still likes playing at the Arena he scored the Raiders first goal and assisted on the game winning goal. Also named the First Star.
Boston Leier was probably a little disappointed. He failed to score on 2 breakaway attempts.
Hunter Shinkaruk
Hunter Shinkaruk is playing better but their was one play that really irked me. He made a half assed attempt at stopping a pass that went for icing, and on the ensuing faceoff in the Tigers zone PA put on some pressure and scored the game winning goal. Their were a ton of scouts in the stands tonight and you can bet they marked that down on their rap sheets.
Next UP: A Home and Home series, Friday Night in Swift, and Saturday Night back at the Arena.

Not usually one to point fingers but some of this loss can be blamed on the coaching staff for what I thought was very poor ice time management tonight. You can't play your top guys like they did tonight and expect them to come through late in close games. Shinkaruk, Valk, Pearce, Leir and Bredo were out for at least 4 minutes straight in the third with a time out part way through. That can't and shouldn't happen at this level.
Omg, it is hard to watch a team who wants to win in the first and then gives it all up in the 2nd and 3rd. It is so frustrating as you can see they were the better team, they can win, they just don't!!! Hart came fired up (and I am not a fan of his) but our guys did not. That was frustrating!
Embarrassing is the only term for the last 2 games. NOT because we are not good enough, we apparently only play 20 min. One heck of a 20 min, but no more then that!
Confidence boys, you are better then this!! We should have had the last 2 games. Looks like some guys are gripping their sticks.
Talent did not win tonight, effort did. Those are the toughest for those of us in the stands, I felt like I wanted it more then they did.
Ridley called it on the radio. You have 4 lines, use them. It is getting down to the wire, and to start shortening the bench and play the same players who are over tired costs you games. Longtimefan called it. This loss and Saskatoon is on the coaches shoulders. They are not rolling all the lines either as forwards or defence.
Any decent or effective coach, would know that in the latter stages of the game, you take shorter shifts instead of extending shifts to last for minutes. Both empty net goals were caused by lack of defence, but can hardly blame the players when you are skating 6 forwards and no Dmen.
JGL
How did PA do it? They did not role 4 lines, Ridley commented on it in the first and second. Is that just a talent difference? I was not there live but watched by webcast so heard Ridleys comments - and commenting on the shortened bench, too bad, I really like that 4th line, I think they are hard workers and often tie the opposing team up in their end, also have been chipping in a goal or two.
Btw, Tigerturf, thanks for this blog. I am a long long long way from home. I watch the Tiger games in the mornings here. It really sucks not being able to be in the atmosphere of the arena, your blog gives me that little feeling of home during the hockey season! No hockey is like Tiger hockey! Thanks!
Tigers will never win a game if they NEVER win a faceoff, especially the ones on a power play.
The lines need to be switched BACK putting Shinkaruk and Dotie together and McVeigh,Leir and Valk. On the road it will be so easy for opposing teams to focus on our top line unless we do.
Now is the time to try some changes on our power play lines.
And why are the Tigers playing such long shifts? Come on coach get things rolling.
The first period shows that the Tigers can beat anybody. What happened from then on in shows what can happen when things change. After the first period PA adapted to what the Tabbies did in the first 20 minutes. They made slight differences and it paid off on the score clock. The game plan that the Tigers brought to the table was awesome. PA countered with a plan of thier own and the Tigers stayed with the plan they brought in.
Teams are adapting to how the Tigers play. They take the body on our small forewards at every turn. Our players take a pounding when behind the opposition goal line. Weather in the corners or going behind the net. A 6 4 220lb dman leaning on you for 60 minutes is gonna take its toll.
There is no energy left to create offense and no legs left to come back and play defense. Especially when you shorten your bench and they have 2 minute shifts.
My challenge to coaches and management which is hard to do since they are the same persons, is to adapt to what other teams give you. If they gonna allow you to run the ball run it. Otherwise pass the ball.
The team is too predictable and thus easier to play against.
Still some puck left to play. Lets be the team no one wants to meet in the playoffs.
Home and home wins against Speedy Creek and all will be well again.
The comments in the paper tonight showed that the coaches wanted their players to be more aggressive instead of sitting back in their 1-2-2.
The forwards have two options....sit back if the opponent has puck control(1-2-2), or attack if they feel they can turn the puck over.
When they attack the defense are also pinching(with a forward covering him) and it puts a lot of pressure on the other team.
When they are lazy they tend to sit back a lot more and the other team has an easier time with the dump and chase into the Tigers end.
The Tigers are defaulting into the 1-2-2 after they score a couple goals and completely backing off....and that's what the coaches mean when they say the Tigers stopped putting pressure on PA.
If, as the Newspaper reports, the Dman backed off and played in neutral zone, then that is what they have coaches for. They should be correcting that while on the bench. Hopefully they have a better result in Moose Jaw on Friday and in the home barn on Sunday.
They are killing Bredo back there, he is the arguably the best defensive forward and he wins a ton of faceoffs and is amazing in his own zone not to mention he played more than 25 minutes that game. Horrible coaching they are killing the development of Staples and Stanton and wasting Bredo (even though he has play amazing back there)
I completely disagree that the coaches have ruined Bredo. Bredo has been scouted for the first time after being moved back to defence. So not sure how that "ruins" him.....
Each Tiger has improved in all avenues of thier game since the start of the season. Can they play better as a TEAM...Heck Yah...
No one is happy about only giving a 20 minute effort. The positives is that we only gave a 20 minute effort. We have 40 minutes to work on..
All hands on deck come playoffs....
Bredo doesn't want to play D he's extremely effective as a forward and a face off man if he's being scouted that's good for him but I know he wants to play forward
Well, play D and be scouted or play forward and not be scouted. It seems that your argument for him being extremely effective on forward is not as convincing to the pro scouts as how effective he is on D. Keep him on D, that is where he is good. I would have him take face-offs on the PP and PK and drop back to D. But he is a way better D then he was forward.
I hope Bredo wants to play foreward. Good on him. I also am willing to say that he would also want to play goaltender, coach, do the broadcast, fill water bottles.
He is a TEAM player and willing to do whatever the team asks of him to help the team win.
You are tarnishing his image by having him sound like he is having sour grapes. Shame Shame...
I like Bredo better at D because he has defensive instincts, and very good at getting out of trouble in pressure situations.
I don't think anyone is tarnishing his image. I think he was quoted before in the paper/radio saying he likes forward better.
But your right Bredo is the type of player who would drive the zamboni or be the mascot if it helped the team win.
I know Bredo likes forward better but as he has stated, he played D in the past too. There is a reason, he is damned good at it! He is a team player and will fulfil whatever role he is asked to do for this team. He is a great player and his defensive instincts are awesome, just makes him a natural Dman. I hope he gets a pro contract out of this, scouts must look at what type of character a guy like that has who will play a different role just to help out the team!
Solid game in net by Marek. Nice win for him
It's to bad that Section5/Hector/Baggy has to ruin comments for everyone.
